To increasingly find hippies more annoying

lankylisa · 29/04/2018 20:03

I grew up with hippy parents and have always ended up befriending slightly hippy alternative people. Now I'm older, I'm finding hippies to be:
-good at bad science
-judgemental of people who dare to want to be materially comfortable
-pious
-immoral when it comes to relationships / using spiritual bs to justify treating people badly
-smug
-dull
-closed
-middle class but scruffy

Does anyone else know what I mean?

Reading this back am horrified that I sound so conservative!

OP posts:

I might be a bit of a hippy. How can I tell? Is there a master list I can check?

Thisnamechanger · 29/04/2018 23:23

I have a hobby that attracts a LOT of hippies. I've basically stopped going because they're all insufferable.

Thisnamechanger · 29/04/2018 23:24

Lost count of the amount of Facebook posts I've seen asking for free room and board/lifts to the airport in exchange for "hugs and rainbows".

Thisnamechanger · 29/04/2018 23:25

Or how many smug "they know not what they do" head tilts I've got for saying I'm not into Polyamory.

Thisnamechanger · 29/04/2018 23:26

Or how many unwanted smelly hugs I've spontaneously had from virtual strangers.

Puffycat · 29/04/2018 23:34

Peace man✌️

Kursk · 29/04/2018 23:36

The knit your own sandals brigade annoy me to!

yetAnotherNewName1000 · 29/04/2018 23:41

@dione are your hippies called the Simpsons?

  • no, either there are more than one lot, or it's a tv programme reference that i haven't got Grin
yetAnotherNewName1000 · 29/04/2018 23:42

Sorry bold fail :(

ElephantsBird · 30/04/2018 06:54

Thisnamechanger I must must know this hobby. Will yoyo share?

ElephantsBird · 30/04/2018 06:55

*you!!!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 30/04/2018 06:58

Oh I miss hippies ! I live a very urban money obsessed place (you can probably guess where !) and I find it sad how people

Don’t recycle
Consume obsessively
Don’t compost
Don’t think about much other than materialism

I kind of miss that ethos

ISaySteadyOn · 30/04/2018 07:02

A pp referred to 'rigid liberals' and I had a sudden lightbulb moment. Those are my parents! It explains a lot about me to me. Thank you!

Danglingmod · 30/04/2018 07:08

I have a lot of rigid liberal type friends. You. Can not. Discuss. Anything. With. Them.

As for the hippies who won't drink tap water because of fluoride but consume every illegal substance of unknown provenance known to man and refuse to work because that's for losers...

MissusGeneHunt · 30/04/2018 07:14

Pseudo 'hippies' come from every class, not just the middle variety.... And yes OP, I share your frustration! Don't think there's many 'real' hippies left to be honest; what I mean by that is genuinely self sufficient, truly peaceful, all encompassing, all accepting and non 'me me me' people. Purely because in today's world it'd be almost impossible to be like that. Drives me up the wall to see those who've dropped out of the real world BY CHOICE, expecting the real world to subsidise their lifestyle. Plenty of those round my way, so it's first hand experience, plus have been in jobs where they are 'clients'.

Mousefunky · 30/04/2018 07:17

I think the ironic thing about modern day hippies is they’re almost all middle class, white and privileged. A lot went to private school.

TERFousBreakdown · 30/04/2018 07:22

when the kids of my ultra hippy friends go into consulting jobs after they leave oxbridge, I know that the worm has turned

You must have met my parents. I did literally exactly that!

Don't have many hippy friends these days. My one remaining one is really testing my patience with her anti-vaxxer BS and her insistence that her DD's asthma will respond to homeopathy (I should know, I had homepathically 'managed' childhood asthma and vividly remember what suffocating feels like Angry).

Having said that, I tend to get warm, fuzzy feelings around hippies. They remind me of my carefree childhood days. Until I notice them giving me the death stare and realise that, in their eyes, they're looking back at a hardened specimen of corporate evil. Grin

TheOriginalEmu · 30/04/2018 07:26

I was raised by hippies, the proper kind in a commune. They were very keen on environmental stuff for sure, but certainly not smug about it. They were and are some of the kindest least judgy people I know.

‘Judgemental of people who want to be materially comfortable’....you mean people who value ‘stuff’ over anything else, yes? I’m quite judgemental of those people too.

Littlechocola · 30/04/2018 07:29

You are obviously mixing with the wrong hippies ....man.

surferjet · 30/04/2018 07:32

Depends how old they are.
If they’re 55 upwards then they grew up in the late 60’s / early 70’s so would have been influenced by the whole hippy culture. But even back then most hippies were middle class drop outs, ( the ‘really ‘cool’ people were mods ) I know a few older hippy women & they’re deliciously bonkers.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 30/04/2018 07:33

Those who call themselves hippies also tend, in my experience, to be totally loaded and had a very privileged upbringing, or have rich parents to bail them out when they quit another job because they didn't want to be a wage slave or, more likely, could e be arsed to get up before mid day.

That's my experience as well. I went to a university FULL of them. I suppose it's easy to frown at people buying non-hemp clothing and drinking cow's milk when Mummy & Daddy gave you a platinum card when you left home.

My biggest issue, is that most of them are also hugely uninformed about the actual affect their vegan, anti-vax, "organic" lifestyle is having on the world.

Bowlofbabelfish · 30/04/2018 07:37

I’m on board with the form that says buy a bit less, recycle, compost if you can, make ethical choices where you can. Walk lightly on the earth, be decent. We’ve been doing that since the seventies. We are both corporate high achievers ;)

The vegan/antivax/indigo child/homeopathy bollocks makes me 🤦🏻‍♀️ And there is SO much of it about. When did science become so fearful for people? We are also both scientists.

buddhasbelly · 30/04/2018 07:44

@lanklisa HA! 'Peer read review or you're not coming in - thats my policy' Grin I may be pinching that!

buddhasbelly · 30/04/2018 07:44

@lanklylisa even!

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 30/04/2018 07:57

I agree on the hypocrisy around drug production and trade compared to evil corporations. And being a eco earth loving vegan who consumes huge amounts of almonds, avocados, cotton (well, wears) and other incredibly thirsty plants we can’t grow here.
