Apologies if this has already been raised, I did do a quick search but couldn't find anything. Anyway, AIBU to ask if any of you will be attending this protest?

derxa · 28/04/2018 21:04

As a site mainly for women, you'd think most of us wouldn't want that woman hater here. If we protested against everyone who came here and hated women we would be out protesting 365 days a year.

Chinesecrested · 28/04/2018 21:06

Well, there is an argument that it is only because of his intervention and strength that there has now been a rapprochement between North and South Korea - thus quite possibly preventing all out war, with Russia and China getting involved. How would Clinton have dealt with it, I wonder?

And as for "slightly dodgy" leaders visiting, some of these are leaders of the worst sort of bloodthirsty dictatorships. Trump was fairly elected in a democratic process. It's a done deal; he is POTUS . What good will demonstrating do?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 28/04/2018 21:09

All sounds like a Father Ted extravaganza Down with that sort of thing

I'm not sure why. When 'that sort of thing' is actually sexism, racism and hate-speech, some people want to try to do something about it.

For many, that will be to protest.

NewYearNewMe18 · 28/04/2018 21:12

And what are you going to do ?

Exactly what will you change in the USA?

Wisdom of Solomon n'all that.

Yorkshirebetty · 28/04/2018 21:23

No. He is the democratically elected leader of the US. As such, he should be welcomed as an ally. Maybe demonstrate outside the Indian embassy about the lack of human rights afforded to women in India.

Yorkshirebetty · 28/04/2018 21:25

@derxa - very, very true!

gussyfinknottle · 28/04/2018 21:26

Best thing to do is to barely notice him.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 28/04/2018 21:27

Exactly what will you change in the USA?

That's really not why people will be protesting though.

ragged · 28/04/2018 22:27

I would totally prefer to ignore DJT. I'd love the entire world's media to ignore him. But that won't happen. So expressing my distaste is next best. #NotMyPresident

user1867895 · 28/04/2018 22:28

Why exactly are people protesting then? Do you not think you walk past racists, sexists, and misogynists every day? Do you pitch up outside peoples homes with banners, shouting when you deem somebody else to be? I am a nurse and work in a hospital if I protested every time somebody was sexist, racist and misogynistic.. well let's just say there would be some very ill people in the country and id forever be holding a banner.

KittyVonCatsworth · 28/04/2018 22:32

I’m going to plead ignorance here but those who are going to protest, what do you hope to achieve from the protest. Genuine question and hopefully doesn’t come across badly. I think he’s a vile man, he appears to revel in the bad publicity so I can’t see how protesting will help. He’s the pantomime villain and feeding that ego through protest can serve no purpose as far as I can see. But interested to hear the other side.

ragged · 28/04/2018 22:35

Why moan about people expressing their free speech rights?

Oh wait, that's a free speech right, too. So fair enough. Some folk won't get it and they don't need to. Just like I don't have to explain or justify to anyone but myself why I want to protest Trump's visit.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 28/04/2018 22:39

Why exactly are people protesting then?

POTUS condoning sexism, racism, hate-speech, bullying, misogyny, etc. from a bullying pulpit.

Do you not think you walk past racists, sexists, and misogynists every day?

Yes. That's exactly why I want to lend my voice to protesting against those things.

user1867895 · 28/04/2018 22:40

I understand why you want to, but there are so many people that are so much worse in our own country and there are no crowds waiting for them. My personal opinion is that it is just jumping on the bandwagon and being a 'social justice warrior'. It reminds me a little of these obscure men-hating feminists.

ragged · 28/04/2018 22:42

It will help me feel better that I made my views public. That I stuck my head that much further above the parapet. That alone will make it worthwhile for me.

Ultimately, Trump has some kind of weird insane jealousy of Obama. The fact that Obama was popular abroad & Trump is very not... the American media won't be able to ignore it. I'm quite happy to help feed those sharks. Even though I half wonder if Trump wants to go down as the most infamous Prez.

fwiw, I may turn up carrying a sign that protests more against Pruitt than Trump. It's the entire administration I'd like to object to. it's ultimately such a disaster because of who leads it, though.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 28/04/2018 22:45

My personal opinion is that it is just jumping on the bandwagon and being a 'social justice warrior'

Who is jumping on a bandwagon? Everyone will have their own reasons for being there. My friends and family in the US are directly affected by Trump. Social justice warrior? I don't get that, sorry.

It reminds me a little of these obscure men-hating feminists

Um...what?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 28/04/2018 22:46

I may turn up carrying a sign that protests more against Pruitt than Trump

I'm doing that in the US on a separate platform - you're absolutely right.

SilverySurfer · 28/04/2018 22:54

No, I will not. When I become president or prime minister and know the half of what goes on and not what is reported by tabloids, then I may consider having a strong enough opinion to go and attempt to intimidate a person into not entering a free country.

Very well said, I totally agree.

"Wow just wow. I didn't start this thread for a bun fight, but I must be honest when I say that i'm surprised by such apathy."

Diversity is our strength......but not diversity of opinion apparently.

VanGoghsLeftEar · 28/04/2018 22:55

I don't like Trump or his attitude towards women. BUT: I will not be protesting, because I don't really understand what the protest is for? What are it's aims, and what will it acheive? It won't stop him coming, so...? Yes he is a sexist douchebag but he is the President of the USA and diplomacy asks he comes to UK to meet thd nobs here. The only Real Life thing thst bothers me is his visit is bound to snarl up my commute.

I will protest many things, but just protesting against a visit which is already in progress is bizarre to me. I will defend the rightto protest. And besides, that Owen Jones is a ginormous bell end.

derxa · 28/04/2018 22:57

And besides, that Owen Jones is a ginormous bell end. He really is.
A self important idiot.

MistressDeeCee · 28/04/2018 23:14

Yes I am going. People have been banned from UK for such hateful racist and sexist rabble rousing, troublemaking hate speech.

It's outrageous that he's been given the privilege of coming here. & that when speech is abhorrent as his, 'freedom of speech' seems to be a way of saying it's ok. Would it be 'ok' if he were not from USA, I wonder?

It's up to each if they want to protest or not. But it's not on to scorn those who do want to. It must be pretty apparent why some would want to protest someone so awful after all.

ragged · 29/04/2018 09:51

I want to publicly and physically voice my support for (compatriot) Americans, of all political persuasions, who oppose this administration on all the grounds that it is incompetent, corrupt, ineffective, divisive, anti-American and a complete kakistocracy.

Echobelly · 29/04/2018 09:55

I'm not inclined to go. He'll only enjoy the attention and smirk about what a great turnout he got. I'd much rather everyone stayed away and let it be total tumbleweed city, but that will never happen. Or at least dedicate their day to some sort of community to service to show that they support caring about vulnerable people, in defiance of Trump's attitude.

Trump is an utter piece of shit human being, but, as others have said, the UK has welcomed world leaders who have actually done worse than he has without mass protest, so why give Trump the attention?

MyBeloved · 29/04/2018 10:05

No, I won't. He was democratically elected and one of our closest allies.

Plus, whatever force got south and north Korea talking, I'm sure he was part of that
..and that is nothing short of a miracle for the world.

I don't like the man but don't think it is right to protest his presence here!
