Yes pate is the title of this one. I'm pregnant (21 weeks) and cannot stop thinking about pate. Literally I would do anything just to have pate on toast. I realise I can't and I won't eat it. But omg pate on toast with a abit of red onion and tomato. Coleslaw on the side.

Anyone think of any substitutes that are safe to eat? Dh is fed up of me going on about my love of pate....but I can't stop thinking about it

This pate (screenshot from Ocado) is vegan but tastes very like real pate. It won’t be exactly the same of course, but it’s safe for you and might help curb the cravings?

vegetarian pate

or make your own makarel pate?
(smoked makarel blended with cream)

bluemoonchances · 28/04/2018 16:29

Oooo I love a bit of pate on toast!

Do you live in an area that has Birds bakery? What about their Potted Beef spread? Bloody yummy on fresh white bread!

trickle4 · 28/04/2018 16:30

Can you had vegetarian pate? I'd happily eat that but I got told it was a no by the midwife - she said any type of pate must be avoided though she is very old school so maybe she's not up to date with the latest pate laws in pregnancy

I'd just eat the pate if I were you, once won't do you any harm.

(I must caveat that with, this is coming from a woman who caved and ate 2 entire wedges of brie in one sitting at around 4 months pregnant)

QuiteLikely5 · 28/04/2018 16:31

Beef paste? You get little jars although I’ve not seen them for a long time

trickle4 · 28/04/2018 16:31

@KirstenRaymonde oh thank you, never shopped with Ocado before but will happily try it to help the cravings :-)

Vegetarian pate is not pate is no problem.

Just hang on. Shite substitutes aren't worth it. 19 short weeks.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 28/04/2018 16:32

Pâté shows off posh keyboard Wink

LBOCS2 · 28/04/2018 16:36

🙄 Apart from the whole 'you might get listeria' thing (which, if you read about the most recent reported cases, appears mostly to come from hospital sandwiches...), the perceived issue with pate is the high levels of fat soluble vitamin A from liver causing problems with organ development. Which clearly won't be a problem with vegetarian pate, obviously.

Also, there are a number of European countries which don't tell you you can't eat pate. So...

BeyondThePage · 28/04/2018 16:37

The official line:

"It's not safe to eat any type of pate while you're pregnant, and this includes vegetable pate. All pate, whether it's made from meat, fish or vegetables, may contain higher levels of listeria bacteria than other foods. ... If you develop listeriosis during the last few weeks of pregnancy, your baby may be very ill."

However, the risk is very small, so if you do eat any ENJOY it!

PurpleGuppy · 28/04/2018 16:39

It's not just the liver in pate that make it a risk for pregnant women, it's something to do with the process of making it - the NHS website says to avoid all pate, even vegetarian.
It's obviously up to you if you choose to risk it of course.

Fridasfridgefreezer · 28/04/2018 16:39

I thought this was going to be about someone’s bald head.

Oh, i would eat it. Maybe don't get the liver one. But yes, homemade mackerel pate is also delicious

Ollivander84 · 28/04/2018 16:44

Morrisons do a smoked mackerel pate which is really nice, it's not set like pate but more a blended fish/cream cheese mix, great on toast

TheBeastInMsRooneysRoom · 28/04/2018 16:46

Guacamole might hit that garlicky spot.

Dietsmakemeangry · 28/04/2018 16:47

How about some mushroom pate from Sainsbury’s or Waitrose? It’s just a mushroom paste mixed with cream, completely safe and quite tasty.

franktheskank · 28/04/2018 16:50

I'd just eat pate Confused

RhiWrites · 28/04/2018 16:53

I love that mushroom pate.

EnglishRose13 · 28/04/2018 16:54

I felt exactly the same when I was pregnant. I caved at 25 weeks and had it for my starter on Christmas Day.

The risk is very slim.

AngeloMysterioso · 28/04/2018 16:57

I can’t be the only one who literally read the word pâté as pate and imagined the OP guzzling sliced foreheads on toast.

Lostforagoodname · 28/04/2018 17:00

Honestly. What’s one slice of liver going to do.
It isn't safe to eat liver every day, but once or twice a month is not thought to be harmful. (Quote)

Surely any processed foods then shouldn’t be eaten as they might contain listeria!?

Wiz up some liver and additional bits in a processor and enjoy.

Loonoon · 28/04/2018 17:01

What about homemade pate? A chicken liver one is very quick and easy to do.
