Pate.

Yes pate is the title of this one. I'm pregnant (21 weeks) and cannot stop thinking about pate. Literally I would do anything just to have pate on toast. I realise I can't and I won't eat it. But omg pate on toast with a abit of red onion and tomato. Coleslaw on the side.

Anyone think of any substitutes that are safe to eat? Dh is fed up of me going on about my love of pate....but I can't stop thinking about it

I ate home made pate. I figured if it was straight from the pan to the blender the listeria chance was minute.

applesisapple5 · 28/04/2018 17:54

Oh mate, all I wanted for weeks and weeks was tuna tuna tuna. You're 'allowed' four tins a week, which just was. not. enough. Is it the thrill of the forbidden do you think?

TheHonSaucyJane · 28/04/2018 18:15

What about veggie pate? Mushroom pate is yum!

TheHonSaucyJane · 28/04/2018 18:16

Here's a nice recipe - lots of healthy pregnancy recipes on this site!

Thanks for all replies, I'm going to have to hang on tonight but tomorrow will be pate central in my house....ooohhhh yeahhhh. And I'll replace the wine with some shloer....sorted 👍🏻

I ate what I wanted the first pregnancy- including all kinds of cheese, and sushi (my craving). Always thought that risks are small etc etc. Same for second pregnancy, until at 7 months I got very sick from eating a cheesecake from the market. Had to be hospitalised, was on a drip for 3 nights and under constant observation as the vomiting was inducing labour. Luckily it settled. Seriously followed every guideline after that.

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/04/2018 18:43

Vomiting isn't a symptom of listeriosis though. There's plenty of other types of food poisoning that can be associated with foods that aren't on the banned in pregnancy list.
If you avoided everything that could potentially be harbouring food poisoning organisms, you'd be living on bread.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/04/2018 18:47

You can get nice jarred pate in Aldi too. The NHS advice doesn't make any sense. If what they say applies to all pate including vegetarian, it would apply to lots of other factory made foods too as the ingredients and processes are similar to lots of other foods.

Binghams potted meat is the nicest brand and it is lovely on buttered toast and available in Morrisons and Asda at least, but it's not really livery pate.

Princess28 · 28/04/2018 18:50

Iirc- the percentage of people with listeriosis who are pregnant is waaaay higher than the percentage of people who are pregnant in the general population. In other words, listeriosis is really unlikely but you are more susceptible if you are pregnant due to a lower immune system.

WhiteCoyote · 28/04/2018 18:51

I ate plenty of pate, unpasteurised cheese, nearly raw steaks and runny eggs all through my pregnancy. I honestly think it’s fine, the risks are beyond tiny.

GeekyWombat · 28/04/2018 18:53

I feel you OP. The day I gave birth to DS my mum in law came round with two jars of posh Heston pate and a family size French stick.

I genuinely credit it with playing a large part of my fond memories of the day!

Crispbutty · 28/04/2018 18:54

I would take the (very very) minimal risk. And I would have a glass of wine too.

TheHonSaucyJane · 28/04/2018 18:55

Lovely!! Dilemma... on hot French baguette or on spicy crunchy crackers?

Wait. Both!!

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/04/2018 18:57

The issue with listeria is that it grows at low temperatures, unlike most other bacteria, so chilling doesn't slow it down. Any chilled, ready to eat product is a theoretical risk ( cooking / reheating kills listeria so ready meals, pizza, raw meat etc aren't an issue).
Any products that are ambient stable aren't a listeria risk as they are either thermal processed, or have another barrier such as salt, low moisture, sugar, acidity, that control microbial growth.

Littlebelina · 28/04/2018 19:04

Oh I didn't realise fish pate was a risk. I assumed it was vitamin A from the liver not listeria (the NHS seem to worry about some listeria risks more than others, some countries ban prepacked cooked meats but they are ok here). Now I really want some m&s salmon pate even though I haven't thought about it in years. Being superstrict this pregnancy though after (not food related) issues last time and avoiding things I know logically aren't really a major risk.

Sushi was mentioned up thread. NHS don't ban this providing fish has been frozen first (most supermarket sushi is fine)

trickle4 · 28/04/2018 19:06

@GeekyWombat oh I've already told my mum on the day I'm out of hospital, she's not allowed to make any plans as she somehow makes pate amazing. It's the way she spreads it and the amount of onion and tomatoes she puts on top. I can't even toast bread like she does...so yeah my post birth pate meal is all planned.....god I sound sad haha

Stormyspaniels · 28/04/2018 19:09

When I was pregnant I asked my GP how seriously I needed to take all the rules about what I couldn't eat, and she said most of her GP friends ignored them completely.

BeyondThePage · 29/04/2018 09:37

The problem with pate is that often you don't eat it all, or it comes as a slice from a large "bar" of pate in a deli.

I would have thought that if you buy a pre-packed/vacuum packed pot and only use from it once the risks would be minimised.

Weedsnseeds1 · 29/04/2018 11:07

Unless you have a refridgerated kitchen, that's permanently wet, which you clean from top to bottom with hoses and jetwashers, and have drains in the middle of the floor to squeegee all the water down, you probably don't have listeria in your kitchen to contaminate anything with.

sw2102 · 29/04/2018 11:18

I have found my people! I spent my entire pregnancy wanting pate! My lunch every day for about a month after giving birth was tuna or chicken liver pate sandwiches. It's so hard when you feel the risk is minimal but you don't want to be the one who gets poorly!

pandarific · 29/04/2018 14:38

Gah, I knew what this thread would be about as soon as I saw it, and I still read it. Me too. And bastarding Brie and Camembert. Sad Sad Sad

Confusedbeetle · 29/04/2018 14:42

Does anyone know anyone that has had listeria? Keep all your food homemade and eat what you want

GermanShepherd89 · 29/04/2018 14:50

Randomly, I have had listeriosis! No idea what from though.

PPs who asked why the concern re pregnancy - it’s both, you are much more likely to contract listeriosis when pregnant (though still vanishingly unlikely to overall) and it can be very damaging to unborn baby.

The last big outbreak I read about though was from cantaloupe melons and prepacked sandwiches.

I decided to wait in the end and had an amazing chicken liver pate on toast with chutney for breakfast the day after getting back from hospital!

Lweji · 29/04/2018 15:01

From the NHS:

"chilled ready-to-eat foods, like prepacked sandwiches, pâté and deli meats"

So, no pre-packed sandwiches either.

So,

“Pâtés (except liver) sold at room temperature, either in tins, jars or tubes are safe for pregnancy,"
