Pate.

Yes pate is the title of this one. I'm pregnant (21 weeks) and cannot stop thinking about pate. Literally I would do anything just to have pate on toast. I realise I can't and I won't eat it. But omg pate on toast with a abit of red onion and tomato. Coleslaw on the side.

Anyone think of any substitutes that are safe to eat? Dh is fed up of me going on about my love of pate....but I can't stop thinking about it

pandarific, you can eat runny cheese if it's cooked...

Weedsnseeds1 · 29/04/2018 15:23

I think the last pate related outbreak in the UK was 1989.
The cantaloupe one was in Australia and there's a big recall on cooked meats in South Africa at the moment.

pandarific · 29/04/2018 15:48

FFS avoid ‘chilled prepackaged foods’? So basically, all non hot food not made by you at home. Er, no. Hmm

I have a full time job and I am knackered, I will buy a sodding Pret A Manger flatbread and a packet of popcorn for lunch if I bloody well please. There is cautious and then there is bloody ridiculous.

Lweji · 29/04/2018 15:50

Flatbread and popcorn are not chilled, are they?

pandarific · 29/04/2018 15:50

Sorry, slightly disproportionate rage there. Blush

But I am so sick of being told what to

pandarific · 29/04/2018 15:53

The flatbreads in pret are a DELIGHT @Lweji. Like a prepackaged wrap but nicer, they always have amazing crunchy fillings with spicy interesting marinades. Miles and miles nicer than your standard cardboard triangular sandwich.

Lweji · 29/04/2018 16:05

Ah, sorry, I see you meant flatbread with fillings. :)

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 29/04/2018 16:07

@Fridasfridgefreezer So did I GrinGrin

Lweji · 29/04/2018 16:08

But, surely, NHS advice is not being told what to do. It's advice that you can take or not based on your own risk assessment.

If there's a risk of Listeria, it's still there or not, regardless of the advice you're given. Guidelines don't change the risk, just make you aware of it.

Lweji · 29/04/2018 16:08

So, shoot the bacteria, not the messenger. Grin

BossWitch · 29/04/2018 16:15

Fucking hell, no prepacked sandwiches? Totally missed that one. Like a pp, I am frigging knackered, working full time and have a toddler. I'm buying a fucking sandwich for my lunch every so often!

and possibly adding pate to my online shop later if it's the same risk as a sandwich

Lweji · 29/04/2018 16:18

Maybe go for a hot panini? At least it's kind of cooked.

BossWitch · 29/04/2018 17:52

Not an option - can't go out at lunch so either need to take something from home or buy on way in.

This is baby #2 and it's never been mentioned by either midwife, so I'm guessing it's not one of the main things to worry about!

butterybean · 29/04/2018 18:18

tbh when I was pregnant I ignored all the advice and just ate and drank whatever I wanted/felt like. The kiddo is fine. Have some, make sure its fresh and in date and maybe don't eat the whole packet.

Littlebelina · 29/04/2018 20:13

The prepacked sandwich thing is not on the NHS website so eat them to your heart's content (unless they've got mould ripened soft cheese, pate or cured meats in them of course :) )

Littlebelina · 29/04/2018 20:18

That is prepacked sandwiches are not in the foods to avoid when pregnant on the NHS site. They are listed as listeriosis source elsewhere but guessing they are low enough risk that they don't advise against when pregnant (ditto cooked prepacked meats which the NHS states you are safe to eat when pregnant)

NoParticularPattern · 29/04/2018 20:29

Man I was a terribly behaved pregnant woman. I drank raw milk (disclaimer: our cows, our farm, known health status and hygiene standards, only ever that day’s milk etc etc. Not just from Johnny next door who happens to have some!). Definitely ate pate more than once, several soft cheese incidents and no end of pre packed sandwiches. I’m a terrible example, but DD is thriving after it all!!

Rainbunny · 30/04/2018 02:39

I'm having a hard time trying to imagine what it is about the process that makes even vegetarian pate unsafe for pregnant women?? How about hummus? I love garlic sundried tomato hummus on toast. here's my recipe (and I think it's addictive!):

SUNDRIED TOMATO HUMMUS

• 1 large garlic clove
• 1 (15 1/2-ounce) tin chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
• 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
• 1/4 cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained and coarsely chopped
• 2 tablespoons dried basil leaves
• 2 tablespoons dried Italian parsley
• lemon zest for garnish
DIRECTIONS
Mince the garlic in a food processor.
Add the chickpeas, lemon juice, 2 tablespoons water, salt, pepper. Process until the mixture is almost smooth.
With the machine running, gradually blend in the oil. Process until The mixture is completely smooth, scraping down the sides of the work bowl occasionally.
Add the sun-dried tomatoes and dried herbs. Blend until the tomatoes and herbs are finely chopped.

Whatshallidonowpeople · 30/04/2018 07:09

Millions of people are pate for years without any harm. Just eat the stuff.

ScreenQueen · 30/04/2018 07:12

I was worried this was a baby name thread.Smile

Nixen · 30/04/2018 07:17

I sympathise OP. 22 weeks here and dreaming about that post birth pate on oatcakes

WazFlimFlam · 30/04/2018 07:42

The issue with liver pate isn'tjust the listeriosis it is the vitamin a, which in high quantities can cause mutations. Hence no vit a in pregnancy vitamins.

However, once would be fine. The issue with vit a is if you eat too much then it builds up in the fat stores.

Wrt listeriosis, I have never understood how they differentiate between a veggie pate and a dip 😕

StylishMummy · 30/04/2018 07:54

I had smoked salmon pate on toast for breakfast every weekend in both pregnancies

trickle4 · 30/04/2018 08:27

Thanks for the continuous replies on my very 'serious' thread....and sorry to those who are also suffering the demon cravings for pate.....

Lots of options to try, didn't get round to making any yesterday but I did settle for cheese and crackers and Branston pickle which did satisfy the craving slightly.

I had pate on crusty bread last night for tea purely because of this thread... And it was goooooood...
