Yes pate is the title of this one. I'm pregnant (21 weeks) and cannot stop thinking about pate. Literally I would do anything just to have pate on toast. I realise I can't and I won't eat it. But omg pate on toast with a abit of red onion and tomato. Coleslaw on the side.

Anyone think of any substitutes that are safe to eat? Dh is fed up of me going on about my love of pate....but I can't stop thinking about it

Just eat pate, it's fine.

reddington · 28/04/2018 17:03

This thread made me crack out the foie gras

DunkandEgg · 28/04/2018 17:09

Crab pate on brown toast is gorgeous and I eat far too much of it.

DunkandEgg · 28/04/2018 17:09

I've never had foie bras, is it nice?

dingdongdigeridoo · 28/04/2018 17:10

Veggie pate isn’t recommended for pregnancy, so I’m guessing vegan isn’t either. But it’s all about calculated risk. I’ll probably have a glass of wine later in my pregnancy. Women in other countries happily eat stinky cheeses and drink while pregnant. It’s up to you.

Laska5772 · 28/04/2018 17:13

Us Oldies ate pate, blue cheese, brie etc etc.. when we were pregnant . I was even given a glass of Guinness in the maternity ward aftre giving for the iron as i had lost so much blood! (was breast feeding too!) . That was 1990!.
DS totally fine..

Laska5772 · 28/04/2018 17:14

I also had the odd glass of wine ..

ALongHardWinter · 28/04/2018 17:15

When I was pregnant with my DD (many years ago back in 1983) there were no warnings about eating pate or liver. I absolutely adored Marks and Spencer's Brussels pate, spread on wholemeal bread, and would probably get through a tub of the stuff once a week. When I fell pregnant,I saw no reason to stop and nobody said otherwise. Imagine my mortification years later on learning that pate should be avoided during pregnancy. Thankfully,my DD was fine.

soggydigestive · 28/04/2018 17:17

The only time I ever wanted pate was when I was pregnant Grin
wait till after, and you won't even want any, guaranteed.
I would'nt risk it, it might stress you out after.

reddington · 28/04/2018 17:17

Dunk it’s beautiful. Always stock up when I’m in the Dordogne.

Octonaught · 28/04/2018 17:22

Make your own pate. There’s a recipe here

You can eat liver a couple of times a month & the iron is good in pregnancy

LaurieMarlow · 28/04/2018 17:24

I'd just have some. The risks are tiny.

SquatBetty · 28/04/2018 17:25

I ate a little pate and the occasional bit of blue cheese during both my pregnancies. Both DC are absolutely fine.

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/04/2018 17:25

Why isn't veggie pate recommended?
You can buy it in a sealed tin FFS Hmm

SlackerMum1 · 28/04/2018 17:25

I’d just have some.... the reason all pate (as opposed to just those made from liver) are put on the naughty list is the risk of listeria cause by the production process. However to put the risk in context there are around 150-200 cases of listeria a year in England and Wales. In total. So the risk is really very small to put it mildly..... if it’s driving you nuts, just go for it! Also unless you’re going to eat a bucket of it, some liver is fine.... you’d have to eat quite a lot to consume a risky amount of vitamin A.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 28/04/2018 17:29

This thread has made me really want some mackerel pate.

notWithoutFault · 28/04/2018 17:29

@Laska5772

You might be ok (and your son) but the trend over the last 28 years for infant mortality might make you think.

Lostforagoodname · 28/04/2018 17:30

@IHaveBrilloHair
It’s the production process, as someone else said, probably more likely to be found in sandwiches.

Homemade anything is ok. Unless you’re a totally careless cook.

Surfingwhippet · 28/04/2018 17:31

Let me get this right, you can't eat pate in pregnancy because of the risk of listeria

Are you more vunerable to listeria then or is it just that it could damage the baby of you get it? If the latter what is the incidence of listeria from pate in the general population?

LaurieMarlow · 28/04/2018 17:36

IIRC, it's the latter. Not sure of the actual figures, but when was the last time you heard of someone getting listeria?

Surfingwhippet · 28/04/2018 17:36

Exactly

TotHappy · 28/04/2018 17:38

@Felloitofbed oh me too. Or crab pate. Or any pate really. Mmmnmmm

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/04/2018 17:39

The listeria risk is minimal due to all the environment and product testing in the factories. But if you want to follow the official advice, just buy the ambient stable French style ones in jars. They are commercially sterile due to being retort processed in the jars. No risk of listeria, salmonella, E Coli or anything else.
Lidl do a nice selection, as do a lot of Polish shops.

Oysterbabe · 28/04/2018 17:39

Pate is making my teeth itch.
Pâté!!!

Mammyloveswine · 28/04/2018 17:45

Oooh I love pate... might break the diet for my birthday next week and get nice bread, pate and some nice wine... yum! Sorry op if you're anything like me you're also missing wine!

The odd bit isn't going to do any harm, everything in moderation imo!

I never gave up caffeine in pregnancy either... I don't drink an excessive amount so felt there was no need! Pissed me off going into one cafe regularly and the barista always said "I assume decaff?" Id always correct her but she insisted EVERY time I went in... judgey cow!
