To say no to the 6th Harry Potter book...

DD is 5. She’s just finished the first five Harry Potter books and, obviously, now wants to move onto the 6th. However from what I and other DCs remember, this one has more mature themes (romance/more detailed deaths) and is generally more complex. AIBU to ask her to wait a year or so before reading it or should I let her try and see how she does?

@JacquesHammer Yeah, and Voldemort has nothing on The Stump People and the Wind Witches.

I'm in awe of this..my dd is 6 and her favourite books are Mog. She can't read them independently though - I read them to her. She wouldn't cope with something as dark as HP.

Children are so different .. I think you need to trust your own judgement on your child.

Xmasbaby, isn't it great that by the time we're all grown up no one gives a hoot who walked, talked, read, was dry overnight etc early or not! Grin

No way a five year old can understand Harry Potter and I simply don't believe parents posting here who say they can

What is difficult to understand about harry potter?

What would be a good age to start reading the first HP to your child?
I intend to buy the illustrated one for DS for Christmas and unsure whether to do it this year (age 6 and a half) or next (age 7 and a half). We love HP so looking forward to getting him into it- I can then plan a Universal Orlando Holiday. Grin
DS is a good reader but on age appropriate books and enjoys being read to- working our way through usbourne King Arthur He has a very active imagination and loves magic type stories.

@joystir59

Not all children are the same.

I can assure you that my 5 year old understood what happened in the first three Harry Potter books.

They really aren't that hard to understand.

HTH.

I think this whole post is really just a stealth boast. I’ve never met a five year old who could properly read and understand Harry Potter and that includes some very advanced readers.

I thought there was a general rule that you don't need to stop kids reading books that are too old for them: either they will find them dull, or they will focus on the stories (side stories etc) that have meaning to them. The great thing about books is that it's just words on a page - if you don't have the experience or imagination to turn that into an image in your head then no harm can be done. The same is absolutely not true of movies etc.
And kids will come back to books again later, reread them and get more out of them next time round.
Let her read them if she wants to IMO.

Tbh I’m reading four to my ds who is 6 atm and will probably try to finish at end of book five. He’s a mature sex but they get darker after five.

Mature six, grrrrrr
