For being bitterly disappointed at the language and attitudes of people on MN lately?

I started using MN for support when I was going through hard times, hopefully supporting people when they were going through their hard times, learn new things, catch up with news etc. Lately however every thread I go on seems to be one big fight session. People are either being purposefully nasty or having a go at anyone who disagrees with their opinion - foul language included in the bundle. Is this really what this site is turning in to? Surely everyone is entitled to an opinion and surely if you don't agree and can't be mature about you should follow my mother's advice 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all'.

I agree entirely with cs and medea.

AIBU - to be getting bored with these threads?

mummydoit · 14/05/2007 15:52

"Why would you lurk for a long time and then post on a site that you think is nasty and scary? This is not a rhetorical question."

Because there is a lot of extremely helpful support and advice on MN and the vast majority of MNers seem to be genuinely lovely people. MN seems to be mostly very positive and helpful but with some unfriendly/hostile posters. I was afraid of encountering some of those.

"oh god
do you not htink its rude to come into a foruma nd slag it off "

Oh dear. It appears I just did .

suzywong · 14/05/2007 15:54

hs this think kicked off yet?

has anyone named names or is it still the archetypal passive aggressive ploy of "some people/posters"

if you are going to be bitterly disappointed, be utterly specific

CS1753,MN is "turning into" anything.. it just goes through phases, as does life and as do people themselves. And even when there are a LOT of threads full of nastiness, if you look, there will always be some lovely ones where people are showing compassion to each other.

hayes · 14/05/2007 15:58

when do you stop being a newbie?

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 14/05/2007 15:59

When you stop feeling like one.

I never felt like one. I just jumped right in. What have you got to lose when nobdy knows who you are anyway?

Frod · 14/05/2007 16:00

lol fio, i agree.

I have never felt like one to be honest...its not like real life when you have to walk into a room of strangers and start chatting

mummydoit · 14/05/2007 16:00

FioFio, it's not always easy to know which threads are going to be controversial . If I'd realised this one was, I'd have steered clear. I've posted on quite a few, less controversial threads before this one so no need to be suspicious of me!

(Scuttling back off to my lurker's corner)

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 14/05/2007 16:01

You can't go back into your lurkers corner once you have participated in controversy.. it's not allowed

mummydoit · 14/05/2007 16:04

Then I'll shove my oar in again!!! The newbie thing is just that some people like to get a 'feel' of a place before jumping in. Get to know the etiquette, get the hang of the abbreviations, get an idea of what's already been talked about. I started a thread about books recently, only to discover the same subject had already been talked about a few days earlier. MN is quite a big forum so it can take a while to find your way around.

Chelseamum · 14/05/2007 16:07

I also avoid all agro. Don't get involve, ignore and check another thread. Never take things too seriously.

AlanThePartridge · 14/05/2007 16:29

Yes. Move to Bounty if you don't like it. Or just turn off your darned PC

belgo · 14/05/2007 16:29

I really dislike 'ffs'. I always read it for what it stands for.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 14/05/2007 16:30

Qui?? What've I said now??!
