To miss my baby's smell?

I know IANBU, and I know it's not a big thing either, but my baby's smell has gone and I'm a bit devastated about it

He's almost 7 months old and I noticed last week that he doesn't smell the same anymore; that wonderful musky baby smell from his little head has gone and I can't get it back 😩

YANBU. I miss mine too not least as he's 10 now and beginning to smell in a totally different and less pleasant way! Enjoy your little one. Grin

Aquamarine1029 · 24/04/2018 18:43

My children are 18 and 20 and I STILL miss their heavenly smell. It's the most beautiful smell it the world!

CloudCaptain · 24/04/2018 18:44

My 2yo still smells of baby. I think you've just over sniffed babies head. Go and get some fresh air and try again. Grin

PootlingPombo · 24/04/2018 18:44

I feel like I will always remember what they smelt like but somehow never be able to recreate it!

@CloudCaptain it's definitely possible I have over sniffed 😆

YANBU. My youngest is over a year old now and sometimes he had days where he smells like sweet porridge. I love it. It's the closest we get to that heavenly newborn smell.

Queenio24 · 24/04/2018 18:48

YANBU, lol at 'over sniffing the babies head' !!
I often get told to 'stop sniffing me' by my kids 🙄 ... and yes they are too old for me to sniff their heads.

happymummy12345 · 24/04/2018 18:50

Not at all. My son is 2 years 7 months and I still miss everything about him being a baby every day.

PootlingPombo · 24/04/2018 18:55

My eldest rarely lets me sniff him and even when I do he seems to always have that school smell-disinfectant and school dinners 😆

I wish I knew what a baby's smell is like. I just can't smell it. I have a newborn but I don't know what people mean!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 24/04/2018 19:02

Me neither Babynonamee! I've never really known what the hell people are on about.

emoshional · 24/04/2018 19:04

My kids (2 and 7) still smell like babies to me Grin

But if I truly want that newborn smell, I borrow a friend's baby and sniff their wee head for a bit.

RandomWordsStuckTogether · 24/04/2018 19:04

My two are toddlers so have lost that baby smell. But I do love the smell of their breath in the morning when they’ve just woken up!!

SolemnlySwear2010 · 24/04/2018 19:06

Oh god I was always sniffing my DD head. My DH could never smell what i was smelling.

New baby smell is addictive Grin

Ginslinger · 24/04/2018 19:08

DS1 is in his early 40s and I still wonder where that smell has gone but he's still Mummy's little soldier Hmm

BothersomeCrow · 24/04/2018 19:11

I don't know if I had faulty babies but mine just smelled of meat, just like periods, unsurprisingly given where they came from! Was quite a relief after 2-3 months when they started smelling like small people instead.

minniemummy0 · 24/04/2018 19:11

I don’t really understand the baby smell. Mine smells of Johnson’s bedtime and fairy powder from her clothes at nighttime and I love those smells, but that’s not her. Sometimes she smells of off milk from her clothes if she’s spit up!

PootlingPombo · 24/04/2018 19:12

@Ginslinger oh god I can't imagine my sons being 40!! They'll have proper feet and everything

Youngest boy still has the squishy chubby baby feet but I know they'll turn into hobbit man feet

😩 sniff

Mine used to smell of cradle cap treatment.

mikeyssister · 24/04/2018 19:57

My friend had a baby at the same time as me. One day we were holding each other's baby and I realised her Peter didn't smell as nice as my Jane. She agreed in reverse, so we swopped our babies back and all was right in the world again.

Seriously though, I've often wondered since then if that very basic smelling ability is the same as animals use to identify their young.

I really miss that smell.

rabbitsitter · 24/04/2018 20:01

Omg people like you are smelling my baby all the time!

Wait until they think I'm not watching then get a good old whiff of his head. I saw you!

Ginslinger · 25/04/2018 08:23

Pombo - sometimes I look at him and marvel at the fact that he was ever a baby

RosyPrimroseface · 25/04/2018 08:26

I wish you could preserve that smell. You'd make a fortune scraping it off babies and turning it into memento pendants for mummies to sniff for the next 40 years!

BarbarianMum · 25/04/2018 08:50

I still sniff my children's heads. Now they are 10 and 12 its easier to do it discreetly- I just hug them and rest my chin on their heads.

frasier · 25/04/2018 08:54

Ooh interesting that some people smell it and some people don’t. I wonder if it is the baby rather than the smeller though as smelled it with my younger sibling’s baby but not my older sibling’s.
