It's tipped to be the new prince's name. I know we're all supposed to love old men's names but Arthur is just too awful.

Come on Kate & Will - you know you want to call him Milo or Ryan. Just do it!

His surname is Cambridge though not Windsor

His surname (when needed) is Mountbatten-Windsor, like William's and Charles'. William is the Duke of Cambridge, but Cambridge is not their surname.

AgathaRaisonDetra · 25/04/2018 12:11

If he’s known as Cambridge then his name should be Carolsfromkingscollege or Parkenride.

Or John Lewis.

LapdanceShoeshine · 25/04/2018 12:17

William & Harry’s surname was Wales at school etc

DextroDependant · 25/04/2018 12:26

That have that many names each I feel sorry for Meghan and Harry having to cobble up something when it's there go.

DextroDependant · 25/04/2018 12:27

"Before 1917, the British royal family had no last name at all. That year, King George V decreed that the family surname would be Windsor. Today's royals still don't need a last name, but it's technically Mountbatten-Windsor, a blend of the Queen and her husband's surnames"

People keep going on about an approved list, but where is this list? I've googled and can't find it anywhere.Angry
I want to know what choices they've got.

SenecaFalls · 25/04/2018 12:35

Meghan and Harry's children will need a surname as long as the Queen is alive because they will be Lord and Lady not Prince and Princess.

SevenStones · 25/04/2018 12:37

Why won't they be Prince and Princess?

SevenStones · 25/04/2018 12:38

Birdling, the choices they have are names that are part of the Royal family's heritage. So, something that has gone before, really.

Curtainshopping · 25/04/2018 12:45

Harry’s children will be Prince and Princess won’t they? Andrew’s were.

But then Edward’s weren’t. Hmm. It’s confusing.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/04/2018 12:47

Aren't George and Charlotte down as Cambridge at school because of Williams title? So Harry and Meghan will be Count and Countess of Drakula and their children will be Igor Drakula and Vyktorya Drakula?

SleepingStandingUp · 25/04/2018 12:49

^The reason given for the change was that it would mean the Wessex children would be more able to live normal lives away from the public glare. ... Therefore they might be styled as the children of an Earl, but they are legally HRH Princess Louise of Wessex and HRH Prince James of Wessex^

So by the time they got to Louise and James they realised they might need actual jobs

CoffeeOrSleep · 25/04/2018 12:50

Curtainshopping - same as Anne's (Zara and Peter), they were entitled to the title Prince/Princess, but their parents decided not to give them the titles. Edward asked for his DCs to be treated as the children of an Earl, not a Prince. (He's the Earl of Wessex) It's a choice the parents make. Andrew wanted his DDs to be Princesses. It'll be Harry and Megan's choice, I think he might be like Anne and want any DCs of his to have as close to 'normal' lifestyle as possible.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/04/2018 12:54

There's pressure to slim line the royal family so sure the brothers have had theoretical conversations about what role Harry and therefore his kids will have

lalalalyra · 25/04/2018 13:00

Harry’s children will be Prince and Princess won’t they? Andrew’s were.

Not at the moment, unless the Queen allows a change as she has for Charlotte and the new baby.

Only the grandchildren of the monarch on the male line are entitled to the HRH Prince/Princess, plus the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales.

So, until the Queen changed it George would have been HRH Prince George, but Charlotte and the new baby would have been Lady Charlotte and Lord Whatever. Then when Charles becomes King they'd become Grandchildren of the monarch on the male line so would be HRH Prince/Princess.

This is where Harry's children are currently at. They'd be Lord/Lady Windsor until Charles becomes King unless the Queen issues LPs.

same as Anne's (Zara and Peter), they were entitled to the title Prince/Princess, but their parents decided not to give them the titles.

Anne's children weren't entitled to Prince/Princess automatically as only male line grandchildren are. Hence why the Queen offered Mark Philips a title.

Back when the Queen had her children her father had to issue letters patent to allow them to be HRH Prince/Princess otherwise they'd have been Lord/Lady Windsor.

Edward's children are an anomaly because legally they are entitled to be HRH Princess Louise and HRH Prince James, but the statement from the Queen said they would be styled as children of an Earl. Which is basically the same as Camilla, who is HRH The Princess of Waless, but is styled as HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.

That's interesting lalalalyra !

LaurieMarlow · 25/04/2018 13:08

The difference between Andrew and Edward's children is confusing. Why aren't they treated the same in the title stakes?

CoffeeOrSleep · 25/04/2018 13:11

Actually, why is it taking so long to announce the baby name? Surely they can't still be arguing about it?

SunwheretheFareyou · 25/04/2018 13:18

I want to believe its because Kate's pushing for Jayden and the Queen's having an absolute shit fit.

SunwheretheFareyou · 25/04/2018 13:26

why on earth do names have to go back to the royal tree, use european name!

Emile, Sebastian, etc.

I feel quite strongly about this arthur business.....

lalalalyra · 25/04/2018 14:12

Legally they are. Edward and Sophie have chosen for them to be known as the lesser titles to allow them more of a normal life.

I suppose it's kind of the posh royal equivilent of "His name is Alexander, but he'll be know as Axel".
