Royal 'super fans' - AIBU to think they are bordering on loopy?

I am pretty ambivalent about the royal family. I appreciate that there is a strong argument for a republic but, generally to me they are neither here nor there, and it is not a life I would wish for myself despite the luxury they live in. A lot of my friends are more of the republic camp (probably an unnecessary bit of detail for my post but thought I'd chuck it in!)

However, what I find absolutely extraordinary are people who camp outside the Lindo wing, dressed in Union Jacks, waving flags etc. I can appreciate it more if they were, say, rock stars but the royal family, its bloody bonkers! Who are these people, and what on earth is it that makes them want to camp outside hospitals and the like...?!

Each to their own and all that malarkey but I cannot understand it at all! (And also feel a bit sorry for Kate having that kind of carry on outside when she's inside having a baby!)

Nice work if you can mange to marry into them. Kate is the luckiest woman on the earth.

spontaneousgiventime · 23/04/2018 13:24

Be very careful what you wish for.

I accept what you say, but look at our system. Yes, we have a woman head of state now, but right through to George it's all males. Women don't get a look in for the next three generations. That can't be right. We should have a fixed term elected head of state, imo.

KeneftYakimoski · 23/04/2018 13:27

We should have a fixed term elected head of state, imo.

Heads of state who are purely ceremonial tend to want to become less than ceremonial. One of Prince Charles' major failings is he doesn't look set to be happy about having no authority.

European elected heads of states are essentially ceremonial in some countries (Germany, say, which has got some experience of It All Going Horribly Wrong With Elected Heads Of State) but in other cases have executive power (France) where the history isn't great. What power do you want a head of state to have? If you're bothered about their being fixed term, presumably more than "saying 'do you come far?'", so what power?

No I won’t

I’m sure the news will lead with the birth story so you shouldn’t be too bored by it today

mandieleeinatree · 23/04/2018 13:30

@VladimirsPoutin

Change the fucking record why don'tcha!

The haters on here always come out with the same shit. 'Oooooh, they're leeches and parasites and scroungers....'

Bet all the people saying this have never worked a day in their lives.

I have noticed some of the nastiest comments coming from people who are ALWAYS on here. Wink

paxillin · 23/04/2018 13:31

I'd still like to camp for a week in central London with tea and gin. Perhaps I can do it for the local elections in front of the town hall. Hopefully people in ludicrous outfits will join me.

Sorry, it's hard to tell tone on the internet. Were you being ironic or do you really not think the news should report on the news?

VladmirsPoutine · 23/04/2018 13:33

You're right @mandieleeinatree I have never worked a day in my life and I'm always on here. Do you now win a prize? Lucky you! Or do I win a prize? How does it work?

spontaneousgiventime · 23/04/2018 13:34

KeneftYakimoski The power of checks and balance comes from the (un-elected) House of Lords. This means the role of President could remain ceremonial, I would have no problem with that. My ideal scenario would be, an elected House of Lords and ceremonial President. There has to be checks and balance, we all agree with that, so therefore a President could be for ceremonial. It should still be an elected person as at the moment handing generation to generation is far too outdated and due to how the births have worked out, unfair to women.

Scaramoose · 23/04/2018 13:34

@MushroomGravy I was wondering the very same. I am hoping it's a deliberate stir for the sake of it as otherwise such views are frightening!

VladmirsPoutine · 23/04/2018 13:35

TWAT alert. Someone get me job!! I can't have @mandieleeinatree thinking I'm a workshy dissident!

spontaneousgiventime · 23/04/2018 13:36

mandieleeinatree I'm retired so can be where I like, when I like, with whom I like.

Saltcrust · 23/04/2018 13:39

mandieleeinatree sorry you find deaths in Syria so boring Hmm

But don't worry, a bit of Union Jack bunting on the telly should see you right.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 23/04/2018 13:39

no I can’t hear what you are shouting at your screen

LaurieMarlow · 23/04/2018 13:39

If we became a republic we would have a president. Putin,Trump or little rocket man anyone?

World's laziest argument klaxon.

Let's be honest, we haven't exactly hit the jackpot with Charles - and there's fuck all we can do about that.

MushroomGravy · 23/04/2018 13:39
mandieleeinatree · 23/04/2018 13:39

Oh God you're all out of bed now are you?

@vlad

No you win nothing.

Sorry. Sad

@mushroomgravy

If the news should report on 'the news' then why are some you getting all wanky and pissy about the Royal news?

Is it because it doesn't interest YOU?

Tough bollocks.

No I was not being 'ironic,' I have no interest about all the news about the middle east and Africa, and I am as entitled to say that as YOU are to say you don't want to hear about the Royals.

And if anyone anybody says any different, that makes them a MASSIVE hypocrite, so be careful before you speak. Wink

Scaramoose · 23/04/2018 13:39

@VladmirsPoutine I think you'll find I'm the twat, @manadieleeinatree told me

mandieleeinatree · 23/04/2018 13:40

Yeah I do find all the news about Syria and all the deaths so boring.

So?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 23/04/2018 13:41

No still in bed Grin

Well earned after the long shifts I have been doing this past week

Saltcrust · 23/04/2018 13:42

Oh dear.
No point in answering really.

spontaneousgiventime · 23/04/2018 13:42

mandieleeinatree I have a feeling the people in Syria who have endured having their loved ones blown to pieces appreciate your comments.

mandieleeinatree · 23/04/2018 13:42

YEP calling people mentally unwell for liking the royals DOES make you a twat. Funny how no-one is having a go at you about that, but people are having a go at me for being bored with hearing about the middle east and Africa every fucking DAY.

Typical MN disingenuous behaviour.
