Royal 'super fans' - AIBU to think they are bordering on loopy?

I am pretty ambivalent about the royal family. I appreciate that there is a strong argument for a republic but, generally to me they are neither here nor there, and it is not a life I would wish for myself despite the luxury they live in. A lot of my friends are more of the republic camp (probably an unnecessary bit of detail for my post but thought I'd chuck it in!)

However, what I find absolutely extraordinary are people who camp outside the Lindo wing, dressed in Union Jacks, waving flags etc. I can appreciate it more if they were, say, rock stars but the royal family, its bloody bonkers! Who are these people, and what on earth is it that makes them want to camp outside hospitals and the like...?!

Each to their own and all that malarkey but I cannot understand it at all! (And also feel a bit sorry for Kate having that kind of carry on outside when she's inside having a baby!)

YABU saying they are bordering on loopy, they drank the loopy juice years ago.

Okay, so you are saying this picture isn't creepy AF

Thanks, @CheeseTheDay. He looks like a Terry, too. I shall watch out for him on the news tonight.

MidnightAura · 23/04/2018 12:15

I think it’s sad. Waiting for someone who looks down on the plebs and doesn’t give a shit about you. It’s not like the first glimpse of the baby won’t be all over the news.

TSSDNCOP · 23/04/2018 12:16

I’ll bet Catherine is nowhere near the street windows.

As to the happy campers, I’m rather reassured when they’re there. I enjoy the Fail trying to describe them without saying they’re stark raving. Good to see Terry still going strong. I imagine they’ll all be off to Windsor directly.

BackforGood · 23/04/2018 12:18

I agree with you about them being completely bonkers.

I disagree with it being different / understandable for rock stars though. Those people - equally bonkers.

tillytoodles1 · 23/04/2018 12:20

DannyLaRuesBestFrock That photo is really creepy.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 23/04/2018 12:23

I can still see there must be fun in a random week of camping in central London with tea, gin and jolly tunes

That would be the appeal for me! ☕️🎂Gin

...I might just go and pack my tent up...

DalmatianSpring · 23/04/2018 12:24

Mental health issues?

Mrsmadevans · 23/04/2018 12:24

I love Katie & Wills and if l lived near l would go too Grin

AnnieAnoniMouser · 23/04/2018 12:25

...but yes, some of them are clearly more loopy that a roller coaster, but they’re having a great time, so good on them.

I’d worry about Terry too if he wasn’t there!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 23/04/2018 12:27

You mean they are not chanting 'PUSH! PUSH! PUSH! !!!'

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/04/2018 12:27

I wouldn't have a problem with it IF the flipside weren't the grotesque spectacle of Diana's funeral. These are the same sort of people - the super-fans.

I was really ashamed to be British that day. Urgh.

mandieleeinatree · 23/04/2018 12:27

@fontella

People worship rock bands, sports teams, historical characters (even met a Napoleon worshipper - they are bordering on fanaticism), film stars, celebrities etc. That's why you see crowds outside film premieres and so on.

These people just happen to be fans of Royalty and a royal birth is a big occasion for them. You don't know their personal circumstances - they could be lonely, have learning disabilities or mental health issues or they could just love the Royals. So what?

I don't see anyone slagging off Football team supporters or people who travel hundreds of miles to see their favourite band or performer.

It's easy to mock and deride. Leave them alone - they are doing no-one any harm.

All of this. I am a Royalist and always have been, so is the rest of my family, for several generations. I went to see Charles and Di get wed, and Sarah and Andy, and Kate and Wills. Each time, with my family and some friends. It was a blast; great fun, with lots of great atmosphere and I loved it every time.

I don't give a rat's bollock if people don't like them and think they're 'leeches' and benefit scroungers, (and other bullshit phrases that the haters come out with,) but as the poster above said, no-one ever comes out with such hate and venom about people who are obsessed with football, tennis, golf, or any other kind of sport, or anyone who's obsessed with music or film stars.

And what amazes me, is how people make a POINT of posting to say how they are soooo not interested in them. Why are you posting about them then? Just so you can let the whole world how 'uninterested' in them you are. Hmm

@Scaramoose

Calling the fans LOOPY just makes you look like a massive twat tbh..... and frankly, a little bit nasty.

EssentialHummus · 23/04/2018 12:29

Another one in the "creepy" camp. If you love the royals so much surely you'd respect their right to have private moments like this in, er, private?

MushroomGravy · 23/04/2018 12:32

I don't mind superfans but I think camping outside of a hospital for any reason is wrong.

MushroomGravy · 23/04/2018 12:33

Yes, exactly and I don 't care who you marry, you don't lose your right to birth i in private.

CheeseTheDay · 23/04/2018 12:34

Difference is though, those sport stars, actors etc, who others worship, aren't kept by taxpayers money. People have the right to voice their opinion, when their taxed keep them!

Dapplegrey · 23/04/2018 12:36

I agree Lying

LaurieMarlow · 23/04/2018 12:36

They're absolutely nuts, yes. But given that we have a royal family (and I'm as republican as they come) then I see this as kinda the whole point of it - to give people something to get excited about.

So let them crack on. It's harmless and appears to make them happy.

turnipfarmers · 23/04/2018 12:37

I think it's one of those quaint, slightly amusing British foibles. They aren't doing anybody any harm so I can't be bothered to work myself up about it when people are losing jobs, starving, etc.

Butterymuffin · 23/04/2018 12:37

Ah, they're not doing any harm. As pp have said, better that than blasting hate at others.

LaurieMarlow · 23/04/2018 12:41

I don 't care who you marry, you don't lose your right to birth i in private.

It's not like they're in the room with her though Shock

Kate's been totally screened from them and the only time she'll actually clap eyes on the masses is that brief photo shoot on the steps when she's going home.

KeneftYakimoski · 23/04/2018 12:43

what I find absolutely extraordinary are people who camp outside the Lindo wing,

Better than camping outside Alder Hey, probably. And born from a related impulse: people attaching themselves to something famous in order to feel vicariously important. "I was there, you know".
