Just spent 5 months doing just this ( money was saved for this and spent wisely) we flew to Sydney spent 9 days then went on a cruise to and round New Zealand for 2 weeks then back to Australia spending time in Sydney Melbourne with family and then camping at and around Uluru and Kings Canyon then back to spend time with family who live in rural NSW and Victoria back to Sydney ( 2 months in total) then on to Hawaii ( Oahu and Big Island) the on to Seattle for a week with friends who live there then fly to Orlando for 16 Days in a Villa visiting Disney etc and Kennedy also see a SpaceX launch. The Hire car we had got a pounding as we headed North up the East Coast spending time over the next 10 weeks in cities in 20 states visiting cities including Savannah, Charlotte, Richmond, Washington DC, Gettysburg, then we headed west on I70 taking in St Louis, Kansas City, Boulder, Monument Valley, Winslow Arizona, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Monterey, Santa Barbara....currently in LA tomorrow we hand back the hire care with 7,800 miles added to it having driven over 200 hours and fly to New York before flying home on Friday. It's been a dream holiday that's been a long time in the planning and involved saving money and spending money carefully for the 5+ months we have been away.
There have been some tough times and tears Christmas away from our daughters was tough but they are 26/25/22 and all live away from home with partners etc and we have kept in touch via WhatsApp etc.
It's doable and most late teens/twenties take gap years but at 16 DH was in the Army and I had left home and was working and paying rent so Gap years weren't an option.
Take the risk and jump travel is fabulous and I can honestly say it's changed my view on life
Oh and where do I want to go back to? NewZealand without a doubt is an absolutely fabulous country the people are so welcoming and it's begging to be explored
What's the absolute highlight? Swimming at night in the sea to watch Manta Rays feed so close they brushed our legs. It was both the scariest and most awe filled thing I've done in my life
