Our neighbour and his mother f-ing lawnmower

Sick baby who we managed to get to sleep at 7pm. He insists on turning on his lawnmower at 7.15. I know it's not his fault she is sick and I get it, he wants to use the good weather. But 7.15pm? Really? To add to it his daughter keeps following him around the front lawn screaming. Baby has now woken up. I'm so annoyed. They are generally a loud family but today they are doing my head in.

Where we used to live we had a neighbour that was always mowing her lawn so she was known as Mrs Baldlawn. Another was Mrs Runner Beans. She was always watering them. Must have got waterlogged!

I don't think that's really unreasonable of them. 7pm isn't that late to cut the lawn. Yesterday our neighbours had a bonfire, AGAIN, without warning us. That I think is pretty unreasonable as it meant we had to close all the windows too. But what can you do? They're entitled to do it. Just got to grin and bear it.

I just put my lawn mower away, sorry but I wouldn't consider it unreasonable until at least 8.30 on a weekend.

YABU. It's nowhere near too late to mow the grass at 7pm. Just put a fan on in your child's room for white noise. Never understood people who expected the world to go silent because their child is sleeping.

I really get that you are tired of your baby has been unwell but I equally don't think your neighbour is being unrealistic in mowing the lawn at that time of night. Hope baby soon back to sleep, and feeling better.

My neighbour did the same. Although we mowed our lawn at 9am this morning so swings and roundabouts. I bet you do stuff which annoys them.

7pmish on any day of the week is absolutely fine. My dh was hovering by the back door this morning until he heard other mowers fired up. It was before 10am, so that might have disturbed lie ins.

It’s inconsiderate if they know you have a baby but not unreasonably late. It may be his only opportunity to do it.

Although like a PP has said I know well how frustrating it is when you are desperate for baby to sleep and someone wakes them. But I always have to remind myself that unless it's past 11pm I can't expect quiet from everyone else just because I'm desperate for her to sleep! Hope baby is asleep again quickly.

I'm sorry your baby is ill but 7.15pm is a perfectly decent time to be mowing the lawn.
The screaming daughter would do my head in though!

To be honest,I've never really understood why a baby/child would wake up at the sound of a lawnmower. I mean,it's a monotonous, regular noise isn't it? The sort of background noise that wouldn't really disturb the majority of people.

Our neighbours have a sit on lawnmower and their DC were riding round on it at 8.30pm the other night. If they had woken my small DC up I would have made them personally get them back to sleep.

7.15 isn't that late especially now as it's still light outside at that time! You can't expect the whole street to go quiet when your baby is sleeping, it's a shame but I don't think what your neighbour is doing is unreasonable though.

We've had similar, including a neighbour start with some loud bass for their bbq as well as just mowing their lawn, both of which woke baby up despite the fan in his room. Such a pain!

Our close neighbours (in a terraced house) have a 9 month old and a 2.5 year old.

They had 6 months of building works going on in their house and garden which affected our every waking moment 8-5pm except weekends.

I am never going to be considerate to them about noise and if they come and have a word with us I will reference them back to that.

TBH, unless you live on a road strictly for OAPs then the likelihood is that whatever time of day you mow the lawn either someone's baby will be sleeping or someone will be following a night shift. 🤔

I wouldn't do it that late personally, but I'd still think it was within the realms of reasonable.

Check your local council bylaws, they usually have something to say about times that it's reasonable to use loud garden maintenance equipment.

Where I live, the council bylaws state you shouldn't be using noisy equipment after 7.30pm. I have spoken to my neighbour before about mowing the lawn after 8pm. I don't care if the sun is still up. It doesn't wake my kids, but it's a bloody racket and I would like to be able to enjoy a long weekend evening in my own garden without a lawnmower roaring next door.

Lawnmower noise is fine. It kind of blends in with Ewan the dream sheep. It’s the bloody strimmers you need to watch out for! Our neighbours sounds like a giant bee on acid at 7.30pm at night

Nothing unreasonable about mowing your lawn then. The whole street can’t be inconvenienced by your baby’s needs. One day your tot will want to play outside in the evening and you’ll be next to a shift worker. Baby’s do get used to noises _ think how many live on main roads with buses chugging passed and taxi’s beeping their fares.

I have a baby too but I think you're being unreasonable. It's still early.
