Woman went into my cubicle and locked the door while I showered

I can’t decide who was BU in this case. I was changing in a cubicle and had all of my belingings in there - as most do at my gym. I went off to the shower (quick shower!) and when I went back I found the door locked! I knocked on the door and a quite stroppy woman opened it reluctantly and said ‘let me get my trousers on.’ All she said to me was ‘I have a baby here.’ When she eventually came out fully dressed she went over to a bench where she had all of her belongings spread out and gave me daggers looks when I went in to change.
Who was BU?

And my children are now in their twenties so obviously I don't go near the gym during the hours children are allowed in as I have done my time Smile

IrisAtwood · 21/04/2018 13:08

l think a lot of this argument is down to different conventions in different gyms and pools.

That is also true. At my gym almost everybody takes their gym kit off and gets their towel etc out, then leaves the bag on the bench/in the cubicle. Valuables are left in the locker. Very, very few put their stuff back in the locker before showering.
No one leaves stuff out when in the gym or in the pool.

TBF if the woman hadn’t had such a stroppy attitude I would have happily waited. OTOH she had a baby with her, so perhaps she was just having a bad day.

Fo those saying they would just move stuff - I’ve seen full on shouty, screamy fights when someone has touched ‘their stuff’. It is a gym in a big city Wink

Pet hate at our local pool - people leaving stuff in cubicles whilst kids in lesson or showering. So frustrating when you can't find one - especially the big family ones which are much sought after. I'm afraid I was 'that woman' in your situation once when I was heavily pregnant and had 2 wet kids to change after swimming lesson & all the family cubicles were occupied or had people's stuff in. I was hoping to be in and out before she got back but unfortunately she did come back soon after. I just said that she shouldn't leave stuff in there and did not apologies.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 21/04/2018 17:40

I think you are being slightly unreasonable, if you aren't in the cubicle, how is anyone to know you are having a quick shower. Not as bad as one selfish bitch at a health club I went to once. Clear sign in cubicle "Don't leave personal effects in here" one woman did just that, went off, didn't come back, I was in changing room getting my children sorted and waiting for a friend. Someone got an attendant to remove items, she came back later huffing and puffing in disgust. Oh well perhaps she couldn't read Hmm still selfish though.

HippityHoppityWho · 21/04/2018 17:58

I always just get my towel, shower, then go to the locker and get my bag of clothes then find a cubicle. I'd be pissed off if someone was hogging a cubicle when they weren't in it and my baby wanted feeding or was getting cold etc.

Hopeful88 · 21/04/2018 18:14

You were, if people didn't do selfish things like that then there would be enough cubicles for everyone. Same goes for sunbed hoggers.

expatinscotland · 21/04/2018 18:27

YABVU. 'Quick shower' my arse.

Mumto2two · 21/04/2018 18:57

Definitely a shower first rule at our local gym, in which case I’d have to agree with the YABU side..But I guess the etiquette might vary... In any case, I’m sure there are worse things to be guilty of Smile

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/04/2018 18:58

She had a stroppy attitude. Yes probably sick to death of cheeky fuckers blocking her from getting changed with her baby. 🙄

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 21/04/2018 19:00

YABU. You leave your belongings on the bench while you shower, if the cubicle is free when you're back you may use it. Thems the rules

FaveNumberIs2 · 21/04/2018 19:13

Shower first, never hog cubicles. That’s as rude as sending someone to get a seat in a cafe while you are still tenth in the queue to order!

Our local pool has an abundance of cubicles but the general rule is you get your shampoo from the locker and go shower, then you get the rest of your stuff from the locker, and find a cubicle to change in.

DwangelaForever · 21/04/2018 19:15

You were. You can't leave your stuff in the cubicle while you're in the shower. Look for a cubicle when you get out of the shower.

OneStepSideways · 21/04/2018 19:27

You were. You should leave your stuff in your locker. Just be thankful she didn't dump it all on the floor outside.

Icanttakemuchmore · 21/04/2018 19:55

Of there were other cubicles free then she was bu. If there weren't any other free cubicles then ywbu.

figelnarage · 21/04/2018 20:22

I feel bad now that I might be an unintentional cubicle hogger
I leave pool with baby
Grab stuff from locker and chuck it in a cubicle (removing shampoo etc)
Quickly shower him so he’s warm
(Usually shivering after a swim)
Then take him straight to cubicle to get dressed
Is this bad etiquette???

Hopeful88 · 21/04/2018 20:30

figelnarage
If there are loads of free changing rooms then no problem but if not you might well be stopping someone else with a baby from being able to dress them while you occupy a cubicle with your things.

Pumpkinbell · 21/04/2018 21:06

You are BU!!!! I take our 5 yr old to swimming lessons every saturday we get up at 6:30 leave house at 7:15 for an 8am lesson only to find when we have a locker every other d**k head has left theirs or their childrens clothes in a cubicle! Stop being an arse and use a locker for yout personnel items. Give other people a chance!! VERY ANNOYING!!

figelnarage · 21/04/2018 22:15

Thanks Hopeful88. There are other cubicles and I would never leave our stuff while we're in the pool.

But going forward I will do the shower first, cubicle after.

Never even realised this was a thing :)

IrisAtwood · 22/04/2018 08:11

But going forward I will do the shower first, cubicle after. Never even realised this was a thing

Neither did I!

As I said in a later post - everyone leaves their stuff on a bench or in the cubicle for a shower. No one leaves their stuff while in the gym or in the pool.

Yabu - this is one of my biggest pet hates. You can leave ypur bag in your locker and get out the shampoo/towel. People do this at my gym/pool all the time even though theres a million signs saying be respectful. If theres no free cubicle I dont hesitate to use one thats been hogged.

Even worse is leaving stuff in a cubicle while you swim- especially the one dedicated large family one with a changing table....ill "accidentally" drip all over things. Yep im evil. But after swimming 4 or 5 times a week for years the selfishness of others has turned me bitter and twisted.

pollymere · 22/04/2018 10:14

She probably assumed you'd left your stuff there rather than using a locker. Unfortunately it happens a lot so it's an easy mistake. You both sound like you were being stroppy tbh. Recently, my youngish dd was using a cubicle for privacy when a lady rattled the door, and even lay on the floor to see it someone was in there, despite there being two other cubicles free. I was just doing the publicly naked thing so was about to intervene when she went into another cubicle. Then she came out and did it again. I asked dd if there had been anything left in there but apparently not. Now that's unreasonable! I don't think she was being pervy, I think my dd was just in her usual cubicle and she was put out.

PeachyPeachTrees · 26/04/2018 11:29

YABU I hate people hogging a cubicle when they aren't using it. She wasn't to know how long it would be 'vacant'.

blackteasplease · 26/04/2018 11:34

I think you were.

But had she not had a baby with her I would.have thought her unreasonable too.

eggcellent · 26/04/2018 11:37

It's bums what save cubicles, not clothes Wink

MyotherUsernameisaPun · 26/04/2018 11:38

I think you were a bit U. Unless there were millions of free cubicles and she was just using yours to be a dick?

I don't think it's fair to hog a cubicle while you shower. I would always shower and then get my stuff from the locker to change.
