To think two oranges after dinner is too much sugar

They are pretty large navel oranges, two of them (whole not juiced) is probably half your daily sugar allowance so probably not a good idea to eat two after a evening dinner?

Anyway, according to the SACN report, daily sugar recommendations are based on ‘free sugars’ which includes all sugar added to food and drink plus sugar naturally found in syrups, honey and fruit juice: but excludes sugar naturally found in milk and in fruit (fresh/frozen/dried/tinned).

WorraLiberty · 19/04/2018 09:08

Noeffingidea - Anyone who eats 2 oranges in one go runs the risk of instantly developing diabetes, or even worse, all their teeth spontaneously catapulting out of their gums.

UserInfinityplus1 · 19/04/2018 09:09

Are they Terry’s

Possibly my favourite response ever Grin

OP you would HATE to see the amount of fruit and sweets my two get through! Both perfectly healthy weight and perfect teeth. Seriously get over yourself!

ThymeLord · 19/04/2018 09:11

Strawberries cause bowel cancer eh. Who knew. Somebody should alert the oncology specialists of the world. We've found the cure. Just don't eat strawberries. Of all the batshit SHIT I've read on here, that really takes the biscuit piss.

mostdays · 19/04/2018 09:12

I do think YABU, yes. I'm also wondering now if you're my colleague who yesterday described baked potato as "so bad for you" and is slightly obsessed with the apparently hideous health risk posed by anything that is not a leafy green vegetable...

PickAChew · 19/04/2018 09:12

After 2 oranges I'd have to take something like war and peace into the bathroom for reading matter.

WorraLiberty · 19/04/2018 09:13

Pure evil

Tapasandwine · 19/04/2018 09:16

OP, are you for real?! Are you being serious? Your child wants to eat a load of fruit over chocolates, sweets and other processed foods and you are actually concerned?

SarfE4sticated · 19/04/2018 09:16

Is it possible OP that your child had two oranges yesterday because it was a hot day and they were thirsty? That's when you're meant to eat oranges fgs. All of you fruitphobes are bonkers - make sure your kids don't end up with scurvy!

ElspethTascioni · 19/04/2018 09:19

One of my children eats carrots like they’re crack- he’ll eat a 1.5kg bag Over the course of an evening if I let him. Is this wrong?!

Riversleep · 19/04/2018 09:20

My DS regularly had 2 oranges after dinner. He loves fruit. I would say I do have to restrict him to 3 portions of fruit a day because if he eats too much his poo is really runny tmi

Riversleep · 19/04/2018 09:23

Twitter sugar and butter sandwiches on white bread- those were the days Grin I do have many fillings

WorraLiberty · 19/04/2018 09:23

Elspeth is there a chance someone switched your child with Bugs Bunny at the hospital? Grin

Think hard now. Did you leave him alone for any amount of time?

How large are his front teeth and ears?

SarfE4sticated · 19/04/2018 09:29

Alltheprettyseahorses · 19/04/2018 09:32

Quite right, OP. After all .. oranges are not the only fruit.

Zaphodsotherhead · 19/04/2018 09:45

Am I the only person to be thinking of the COST of these oranges? Maybe OP is just flaunting her wealth at being able to afford two whole oranges for a child's pudding! In my house oranges are purely cosmetic and sit in the fruit bowl until they go green underneath, because we can only afford to buy them once ever six months!

This is an orangey stealth boast.

Mightymucks · 19/04/2018 09:55

zaphod, I can feed a family of 8 for three weeks out of just one orange.

ShotsFired · 19/04/2018 09:55

@MorningsEleven Fruit Mentos now have ideas printed on each sweet such as "run up the stairs"

The only way I'd follow that advice is if someone threw the mentos packet up there and I had to go and get them.

BlackInk · 19/04/2018 10:19

My 6 and 9 years olds asked for a 2nd orange after tea last night... I said no, but you can have a piece of your Easter egg chocolate Grin...

In my defence, DS is prone to getting the squits (and I'm bonkers).

penguinsandpanda · 19/04/2018 10:28

Anyone concerned about the price of oranges why have you not starting growing orange trees in your garden? I am not sure if it works for the chocolate orange but if you plant one naval orange in a hole a tree should shortly appear enough to feed you and all your neighbours for a year.

KeneftYakimoski · 19/04/2018 10:30

You can make a lovely drink by peeling the outer skin of an orange and putting it into espresso, and then adding milk. Coffee: lovely. Orange: lovely. Coffee and orange: very lovely.

And then you can eat the orange anyway. See, just for zaphod, this is both self-indulgent luxury and a handy household economy tip.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/04/2018 10:34

I always have two oranges after dinner. Or if I'm working two in my packed lunch.
I never get colds, so all the vitamin C must be doing me good.

jnfrrss · 19/04/2018 10:34

DS tried to sneak 4 easy pealers into his lunchbox, luckily I nipped it in the bud and replaced with just the one, along with 3 grapes, two cherry tomatoes, a lemon and a lime. Was going to give a whole carrot but that's a bit high in sugar so snapped it in half.

Can't have peas for dinner now though, as they are very carb and sugar heavy!

In all seriousness does orange coffee really work? Shock

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 19/04/2018 10:38

Yes-I can't imagine orange coffee-is it real or a joke before I try?

Orange peel and a cinnamon stick in a simmering pan of water makes a house smell lovely. And strips of orange zest in a chicken traybake is delicious
