To think two oranges after dinner is too much sugar

They are pretty large navel oranges, two of them (whole not juiced) is probably half your daily sugar allowance so probably not a good idea to eat two after a evening dinner?

Ahhhh . The old banana smoothie dilemma. Thanks for the link. Only on MN ..........Hmm

Bluntness100 · 19/04/2018 08:11

Op, are you concerned becayse of the thread where the lady was having a smoothie of two bananas, honey and peanut butter or something for breakfast? And a bunch of folks said too much sugar and a bunch of others laughed at them and said don't be ridiculous?

Honestly you can't take the opinion of randoms on mumsnet and subsequently then live your life by it.

If you wish to know if two oranges is unhealthy, mind boggingly then there is much nutrional advice on line. The answer is no, it's not unhealthy and is fine in the context of a balanced diet

Cath2907 · 19/04/2018 08:14

Only on MN. 2 chocolate oranges a bit much in one go though!

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 19/04/2018 08:14

The banana thread, if its the one i think it is, was called something like is this a healthy breakfast but i i cant find it

reallyanotherone · 19/04/2018 08:19

Oranges is way too much sugar op.

Insulin pseudoscience spike sugar evil no carb atkins paleo blah blah blah.

You need more protein. A handful of almonds would be a better choice. That would prevent insulin resistance blood sugar hyperglycaemic coma.

Protein and dust. You need the dust for fibre or you’ll get colon cancer.

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 19/04/2018 08:20

Batshit.

Also, if your small child can fit in 2 massive oranges after dinner, you probably didn't give them enough dinner.

Loonoon · 19/04/2018 08:21

I think if he ate two oranges after dinner he must have still been hungry. Give him a bit more food at dinner.

gingercat02 · 19/04/2018 08:22

Fructose when it's in whole fruit is fairly slow release. Very few people eat their 5 a day (which us actually just made up not evidence based. The cancer charities and lots of other countries use >8 portions). If you have diabetes or want to lose weight it is best to stick to 2-3 portions of fruit otherwise fire away OP. The other thing the cancer charities suggest is "eat a rainbow" so lots of different colours of fruit and veg as they all have different benefits

Just a word of warning to those seriously considering Terry's Chocolate Orange as a source of nutrition. These deceptively pleasant fruits contain only orange oil - a refined extract from oranges - so have quite a low actual fruit content. As a result you need to eat far more of them to make up your 5-a-day than if they were yer actual picked-off-a-tree type oranges.

Personally I would find eating 5 chocolate oranges in 24 hours a bit sickly. I therefore endorse the advice to mix it up a bit. The good news is that Drumstick Squashies contain apple pulp and coconut.

@MorningsEleven

Don't forget the plums. They are just misogynistic bastards.

penguinsandpanda · 19/04/2018 08:27

Mighty This is actually what's occurred with my DS, he started off with a little fruit then it got to all the fruit he could get hold of and orange peel has started to grow by itself under the sofa. Hopefully he will have a tree soon to feed this habit. He's probably autistic but I haven't asked if the oranges are 😉

RB68 · 19/04/2018 08:27

For diabetes and keeping fruit sugar low berries are a lower fruit sugar option which works well so blackberries, raspberries and strawberries - such a hardship.

You are more at risk from processed sugars or sugar added to food. there are alot of myths about what diabetics are and aren't allowed and much depends on the individual and their individual reaction to foods especially for type 2's which is a very personal/custom disease due to it being resistance based

MorningsEleven · 19/04/2018 08:27

@Anniegetyourgun

Fruit Mentos now have ideas printed on each sweet such as "run up the stairs". Not only a cocktail of fruity goodness, also an exercise plan. Maybe worth setting up a healthy lifestyle YouTube channel with this vital information.

Louiselouie0890 · 19/04/2018 08:27

I'd be miserable if I lived this strict

BertrandRussell · 19/04/2018 08:29

"Don't forget the plums. They are just misogynistic bastards."

But eating plums is surely a feminist act. Isn't that what feminists are supposed to do all the time ?

Jux · 19/04/2018 08:35

@MorningsEleven, I actually love a bit of vinegar. I swig it straight from the bottle, though I do sometimes put it on strawberries when I'm not covering them with salt and pepper. I'm fat as a pig though Sad

CuboidalSlipshoddy · 19/04/2018 08:39

I'd be miserable if I lived this strict

A few generations ago they'd be up at 4am to sing matins. Now they obsess about food. The motivation is the same: self-indulgent martyrdom.

To quote Jean Le Bruyere, "No vice exists which does not pretend to be more or less like some virtue, and which does not take advantage of this assumed resemblance"

Lilyhatesjaz · 19/04/2018 08:40

I wouldn't eat 2 oranges at the same time as they would give me heart burn and indigestion I would eat 2 in the same day spread out.

TwitterQueen1 · 19/04/2018 08:52

I have been known, in my youth, to have eaten an occasional sugar sandwich

RosyPrimroseface · 19/04/2018 08:57

I've just found two humbugs in my bag and eaten them at 8.30am. Will i die?

cleofatra · 19/04/2018 08:58

OP, if your child is 6, why did you LET them eat 2 if you are bothered?

BitOutOfPractice · 19/04/2018 09:00

RosyPrimroseface yes, yes you will die eventually Sad

Emmasmum2013 · 19/04/2018 09:00

OP maybe if you're still worried after this thread about how much sugar your 6yo is having after evening meal, then maybe try feeding them more for their meal?? He/she must still be rather hungry if they've scoffed 2 massive oranges after a main meal.

Don't worry about the sugar content of fruit. Unless they're diabetic or on a calorie controlled diet, there's nothing to worry about.

MorningsEleven · 19/04/2018 09:04

@Jux

That's because you've eaten too many oranges. They're more fattening than deep fried peanut butter and nutella sandwiches and one orange contains more sugar than eleventy bags of candyfloss.

Stick with me, I'll have you cured of that unhealthy fruit habit in no time.
