To think two oranges after dinner is too much sugar

They are pretty large navel oranges, two of them (whole not juiced) is probably half your daily sugar allowance so probably not a good idea to eat two after a evening dinner?

@MorningsEleven

You need help to stop bingeing and learn to live on vinegar.

I know. I did try but then realised it was Balsamic from Waitrose which has actual sugar in it. I'm so ashamed. I'm wearing a paper bag over my head and planning a day of hot water with slices of organic lemon as I post.

SarfE4sticated · 18/04/2018 23:59

Bloddy hell, can't you just eat as much fruit as you like? I refuse to have some people on MN tell me how many bananas I can eat fgs.

Inertia · 18/04/2018 23:59

Yes, I think you're right. Too carby generally- empty calories , not enough protein.

I'd give the 6yo some hummus-covered lentils for pudding instead, or perhaps a boiled egg- after all, who would want a pudding to be sweet or somehow different in flavour/texture from the main course?

noeffingidea · 19/04/2018 00:06

You're right, OP. Far too much sugar. Anyone who eats 2 oranges in one go runs the risk of instantly developing diabetes, or even worse, all their teeth spontaneously catapulting out of their gums.

CheeseandGherkins · 19/04/2018 00:08

I cannot stand the recent obsession with sugar. It's far better than the artificial alternatives.

SarfE4sticated · 19/04/2018 00:14

CheeseandGherkins It's just another stick to bash ourselves with. I don't have that much of a sweet tooth, but when I want chocolate I eat it. When I want olives I eat those, when I want a bag of crisps I eat those. I'm a functioning person who chooses what she eats. I don't analyse every ingredient, add it to a spreadsheet and then flagellate myself. Come on, we know what's good for us, fruit, veg, some meat/protein some fat. Can we just chill out a bit on this?

MotheroftheNorth · 19/04/2018 00:15

I was against giving my kids 2 if the same fruit a day. It’s better when they have different fruits and each have different vitamins. Too many oranges isn’t exactly the most healthiest of options. Especially for a six year old

Herbalteahippie · 19/04/2018 00:15

YABU. The sugar in oranges is different to the sugar in chocolate! Plus there’s antioxidants, fibre and vitamins. It’s not like a pint of orange juice.

CheeseandGherkins · 19/04/2018 00:16

Sarf I couldn't agree more.

BertrandRussell · 19/04/2018 00:19

In what way?

Bettiedraper · 19/04/2018 00:20

Too much fibre (e.g. fruit) is actually very bad for young children, as it can prevent their bodies from absorbing key nutrients such as iron.

Similarly too much fibre and not enough fat can lead to vitamin deficiences and stunted growth.

It was a reasonable question for the OP to ask. I think some people on here have been brainwashed by crappy diet plans into thinking fruits are "free" so don't have any nutritional impact.

FrozenMargarita17 · 19/04/2018 00:20

Someone's going to ask if the oranges could possibly be autistic, I assume. This is MN after all.

MotheroftheNorth · 19/04/2018 00:24

BertrandRussell

Google is your friend. I can’t help but feel parents who are unable to know the risks of certain food is the reason so many kids end up having health problems at not only a young age but during adolescent aswell.

Every food that entered my child mouth I made sure i knew the risks off. My kids ended up growing up with no health problem and are all fit and tall.

SarfE4sticated · 19/04/2018 00:24

So when we were children, and we ate loads of strawberries at a pick-your-own farm trip, we were probably doing ourselves irreparable damage?

helpfulperson · 19/04/2018 00:27

Are they Terry’s?

No, they're mine!

The best ever advertising slogan.

Two oranges after dinner 1001 on my list of 'things to worry about' somewhere after the war with Russia

Praisebe · 19/04/2018 00:29

Do we seriously live in a world where people have been convinced fruit is bad for them !?!?
You'd hate my diet OP im a raw vegan and eat about 4 large oranges as part of my breakfast Grin

MotheroftheNorth · 19/04/2018 00:30

SarfE4sticated

It’s proven that too many strawberries can lead kids to cramping, gas and may even lead to bowel cancer.

Bettiedraper · 19/04/2018 00:30

You could make that same observation about 99.9% of the things people on MN worry about.

SarfE4sticated · 19/04/2018 00:31

Good god Praisebe go to A&E immediately.

pallisers · 19/04/2018 00:32

I've heard of many things to be against in this life but this is a new one on me.

"It’s proven that too many strawberries can lead kids to cramping, gas and may even lead to bowel cancer."
Proven by whom?

SarfE4sticated · 19/04/2018 00:33

MotheroftheNorth but surely if that's all you ever eat!

BertrandRussell · 19/04/2018 00:34

You're going to direct me to Dr Mercola, aren't you?

Changebagsandgladrags · 19/04/2018 00:36

What is this two oranges you speak of?

SarfE4sticated · 19/04/2018 00:39

I think of a healthy diet as what a gifted farmer could manage to grow/raise on a smallholding. So lots of veg, beans, the odd egg/chicken, seasonal fruit. Chuck in some flour for good measure and there you have it. If you could grow it, and it would be in season it's good for you. If you can preserve it the same. Imagine those 100 year old Italians living on their villages in the Italian mountains. They have the right idea.
