I’ve just come back from a holiday in South Devon & I want to know who are these people that manage to be perfectly dressed for all weathers? I have come across this sub species before but holidaying with small children at the British seaside seemed to be their natural habitat.

If I & DCs are appropriately dressed for rain, sun & wind I then lose any bonus points by resembling a bag lady.

I watched one of these creatures arrive at the beach with 3 small children, 1 was a young baby. She was carrying one small bag!!! And it was a frigging Mary Poppins bag, with everything she needed!

Meanwhile I was struggling to drag the pram across sand, my hair was in knots from the wind & my feet were hurting from the pebbles as I was barefoot (didn’t want my shoes to get wet). How do I evolve?

Yes. Yes. Who are these women whose long hair stays put in the wind? I must have got the faulty copy of the Put Together Gene.

Not just me then! I have long hair that can look beautiful, but the sea air turns it into a nest & the only thing eyeing me approvingly is a seagull.

I've had my hair Rapunzel length & it's now extremely short pixie. My DD now has hers long. Long hair is best in French plaits for a day out, especially by the sea, IME. Don't know why but salty sea air seems to act like glue on knotty hair. Also use a silicone based serum before positing, & plait it damp so it dries tighter. Also a bun is good, with spiral pins and possibly a net, if your hair is very slippy (mine always was).

What shoes do I need, at various points I felt I needed reef sandals (?), wellies & hiking boots.

I also now understand why Crocs are popular for DCs

Ahh @truthybeach you have stumbled across the rare breed of uber-mums. They tend to collect together like unicorns.

They have immaculate make up by 8.30am, and whereas mere mortals have bird nest hair on a beach, they simply have wind-tossed curls. Legend says that when they eat sandwiches on the beach, they dont even get any sand in them.

I spend most of my time on the beach yelling 'stop trying to catch the sodding seagulls they only want you for your ice cream'.

Wouldn't it be amazing if one of these mythical creatures actually read this post, and commented on it and shared all her secrets?!

I have a pixie cut, it still gets tangled in high wind (longer fringe). The only explanation for these people is witchcraft. Witchcraft, I tell you.

I think they are the same as the beautiful people. We used to have one by where we lived. She was tall, slim, white blonde and just the right amount of tanned skin. She wore perfectly fitting, uncreased clothing in light shades and seemed to float rather than walk. When she smiled I half expected singing birds a la disney. She was joined in time by the beautiful man and beautiful dog, all varying shades of blonde and beautiful. By the time we moved she had had the beautiful twins who were one of each and always were happy and smily and had a cream pram that never got traces of grubbyness on it.

I want to be her when I grow up.

Most of the women in the article you are laughing at look absolutely lovely and are clearly having a great time. What a monumental twat you are laughing at them.

My hair is always fine at the seaside, its knee length and I think the weight might help. The impossibly small bag is easy, you need to know how to roll things and squish it in like tetris, it just takes practice (it is also easier if you have small children, small clothes take up less space).

I do look suspiciously like a witch though, so it could be witchcraft.

I always find my self looking at other, better prepared parents, thinking 'wellies! Of course, why didn't I think of bringing those' (or warm clothes/shorts/gloves, etc)

my hair stays put in the wind. unfortunately, this is in the vertical straight up from head position. It was really windy on holiday. some poor bugger involuntarily started and laughed at it.
