To not iron sheets for guests

Almondsupreme · 13/04/2018 12:51

My mum is coming to stay for a night or two. She has never stayed before as I've always lived close enough that an overnight visit wasn't necessary. Now I'm wondering should I iron the sheets for her.
On one hand I CBA ironing (don't iron ours) . On the other hand it's nice to sleep in ironed sheets and it'll add a nice touch to the new house experience.

What do others do for guests?

My sheets are the Marks and Spencer non iron Egyptian cotton, probably not the best but good enough, a mid range sheet and fairly easy care

SnowWhite33 · 13/04/2018 18:02

I can hardly keep up with the washing having a preschooler and a baby.
The only thing that gets ironed in our house are my DH shirts as he wears a suit to work. He did it himself when we both worked FT, then i ironed it when i was home with my DS in nursery and now we send it to dry cleaners.

Flowers or some daffodils from the garden job done

My garden JUST emerged from snow. I could certainly lay on some nice moss patches or perhaps a ton of fallen branches but there won't be flowers there for another month at least.

I'll cancel all guests.

Bobbybobbins · 13/04/2018 18:22

I never iron anything barring clothes for a wedding etc. I only buy work clothes that do not need to be.

StealthPolarBear · 13/04/2018 18:34

LizzieDarcy1907 that's because you are 110 years old :o
I barely iron clothes and never sheets (the luxury is that they feel and smell clean) but am strangely drawn to the thought of starching them. Next time I have the bed to myself...

SoyDora · 13/04/2018 18:36

We have lots of overnight guests.
I have never ironed a sheet in my life and never intend to. Life is too short.

hibbledibble · 13/04/2018 18:37

I don't even know where my iron is.

Ironing sheets is lunacy in my opinion Shock

SoyDora · 13/04/2018 18:39

I think you should all try ironing and see the difference, seriously. wink

I’ve got far far more exciting things to do. Seriously Wink

Almondsupreme · 13/04/2018 18:59

I still haven't done anything about the sheets except think about them.
Yes yes to the previous poster who said the amount of time I've spent reading the thread would be the amount of time I'd need to iron the sheets!
I'll do then tomorrow on the bed. And add a little vase of flowers. It'll be like a hotel!

I'm sure she will appreciate it @Almondsupreme I gave up ironing sheets after having my 3rd baby but I do miss them. And feel rather slatternly for not doing them. Somehow I need to winkle enough hours into my day to iron sheets again. Whatever the naysayers on this thread may think, ironed sheets are worth the effort.

Baubletrouble43 · 13/04/2018 19:14

Haha lazy for not ironing sheets. Jesus Christ. My own mum would bollock me if I DID iron her sheets. She'd think it was ridiculous. And so do I.

Idontdowindows · 13/04/2018 19:31

I think you should all try ironing and see the difference, seriously.

been there, done that, not worth the trouble.

Duckswaddle · 13/04/2018 19:32

Why the fuck would you bother ironing sheets?? Who even notices?
My MIL irons knickers and her shower curtain. Confused

OpheliaStorm · 13/04/2018 19:43

I will rub the iron over the bottom sheet WHILST ON THE BED! (extension leads are your friend...) And will do the pillowcases (on the ironing board). Not much trouble really.

But will NEVER iron a duvet cover. Sorry.

Do many people use a top sheet now, I'm thinking of it. Might reduce the amount of time I need to replace the duvet cover!

But anyway we don't iron anything here except for guests, but got to keep up appearances lol.

Situp · 13/04/2018 19:47

The only ironing done in this house is when my mum visits because she does it!

I have been known to run my hairs straighteners over a collar in an emergency...

MerryDeath · 13/04/2018 19:50

my son was enthralled by the ironing board when i got it out of the cupboard the other day. he'd never seen it before. he's 11 months old (enthralled by everything tbf). i wouldn't!

RingtheBells · 13/04/2018 19:55

We use a top sheet as it is easier to change than a duvet cover, sheets get washed every week or two, duvet cover ever month or two with bed and pillow protectors, there’s a whole new thread there Grin sheet washing.

Celticrose · 14/04/2018 07:50

I have never ironed sheets but my mum always did. Now that she can't manage she leaves them at the nearby laundrette and has them washed and ironed. I have to admit I sometimes do the same only I get them washed and folded (cheaper) My one guilty pleasure though there is only two of us.

Baubletrouble43 · 14/04/2018 08:15

Ophelia running the iron over the made up bed is a trick I was taught when I worked as a Chambermaid in a hotel!

Fridasfridgefreezer · 14/04/2018 08:19

I’ve got a cleaner who irons for me and I tell her not to bother with bedding.

coconuttella · 14/04/2018 08:28

So ironing sheets isn’t enough for some and sheets are startched? I don’t have any startch, wouldn’t know how to, and proud of it!

Out of interest, is anyone who irons sheets under 60?

TheGrumpySquirrel · 14/04/2018 08:28

Who on earth irons sheets??Confused

coconuttella · 14/04/2018 08:29

It wouldn’t surprise me if some people iron their carpets and car seats, perhaps even their hair!

FASH84 · 14/04/2018 08:30

We once caught my gran ironing the inner tent for their caravan awning, she has never lived it down. Don't iron them, if they're creased spritz with water (scent it with something if you like) and either hang on the line or pop in the dryer for 20 minutes, should get creases out.

Fairylea · 14/04/2018 08:30

I don’t iron anything except shirts (for work). Ironing sheets seems completely pointless to me, I’d much rather be doing... well, anything else really.
