People Looking In Lounge

Public pavement runs past house lounge. No blinds or nets. People look in when they walk past. Would you put a sign up in the window saying 'please don't look in'?

I have blinds up. We have a small front garden but you have to walk up the steps to the pavement. It means everyone looks in as you look down into the house. I look myself so I can't blame them.
I like blinds tbh because I like the privacy and it keeps the sun from blaring in (if we ever have any) and makes it cooler in summer. I also close them in winter when I am sick of looking at the snow and rain. A sign would only draw people's attention even more so would be daft.

You could try this sign Wink Grin

Why on earth would you NOT have nets or something in the window?
Quite honestly i'd be embarrassed to have someone look in, not angry. I'd worry they're judging my home, how clean it is or isn't, if i look presentable or not (probably not, my hair wouldn't be done if im not going out somewhere).

I guess i kind of just naturally assume people who don't have them are kind of exhibitionists who either don't care about being watched or who maybe even get a kick out of it.

Then again, as a very young child (6 at most) i was playing out in the street of a friend, and happened to lean face first against someones window (i think i was counting for hide and seek) the gentleman inside got VERY angry and shouted at me (couldn't hear him but he was looking at me and was clear he was angry at me looking in, even though it wasn't something i did intentionally) but it was late, it was getting dark, and his curtains weren't closed. I can still picture the layout, where he was sat, the child in the nappy next to him, and this was at least 20 years ago. I remember the sheer panic i felt, that i had done something wrong, something bad, and genuinely afraid he was going to come out of the house you shout at me or worse.

If you don't want people looking in, put up a barrier, and close your curtains when it starts to get dark and people can see everything because the lights are on, even from across the street!

Birdshitbridgegotme · 12/04/2018 12:18

There's a thing you can buy called privacy film (i think thats what its called). It's mirrored on the outside so you can see out but people can only see themselves.

purplelila2 · 12/04/2018 12:19

Strange question...
YABU you want privacy without curtains and blinds whilst your window faces a public pavement ?

Yeah sure OP makes perfect sense rolls eyes

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 12/04/2018 12:22

Same problem here - used this company, very easy to install.

Then again, you see a lot of christmas cards with scenes of bare windows and the focus being whats going on inside, maybe its considered normal to look in!

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 12/04/2018 12:28

We have this at our kitchen window. I have a roller blind but don’t want it down all of the time as it blocks so much light and terraced houses are often dark anyway.
One of the women down the road always has a really good gawp as she passes and has even started to wave at me while doing it. I wouldn’t mind so much if she was pleasant but she really is not.
I have started pointedly closing the blinds when she does it.
I completely understand those who quickly glance in, as something catches their eye and then go on their merry way, but some actually stop and stare.
Vertical blinds would probably be the best option but it is annoying to have to block the light.

Glug44 · 12/04/2018 12:29

Blinds

popcornpaws · 12/04/2018 12:34

I love looking in peoples windows especially at christmas, but only if they have no blinds and curtains opened, imo they must be okay about people doing a quick “rear window” as they walk past or look out the bus window.
To be fair i never close my blinds or curtains unless im in bed, and im quite happy for people to have a look in as they pass.

headinhands · 12/04/2018 12:46

And there it is. My day is complete. Ive been accused of being a journalist. Grin

Pot plants work quite well, If there is something either in or outside the house (eg shrub) then as they walk along looking in the leaves or branches break their line of sight. Once the line of sight is broken they'd need to refocus to see in, by then they are past.So they might glance in but it stops staring in.

MyMagicStars · 12/04/2018 13:11

Curtains. Blinds. People are naturally nosy.

Redglitter · 12/04/2018 13:13

Would you put a sign up in the window saying 'please don't look in

😂😂😂 That'll definitely work

perkyblender · 12/04/2018 13:13

A sign is actually hilarious. Just put up blinds! People are naturally very nosey and an innocent glimpse is what the majority of people can’t help but do!

HumptyD93 · 12/04/2018 15:02

We live in a terraced house, we can see straight into the house across the road. I don't mean to look...but my eyes are drawn in!!!

We have nets....well more of a voile. I can see out but you cant see in from outside (unless its dark out and lights on inside). Its got a simple/trendy pattern on it too so doesn't look "old fashioned" or like my grannys net curtains.

A sign would make people look to see what it says.... just put up nets/voiles!!!

Shadowboy · 12/04/2018 15:05

I can’t help but look in. It’s just human nature I think. I hate nets though. Go for shutters - much more classic and never date unlike nets.

Lou222 · 12/04/2018 15:14

Nets are hideous, do not have nets, anything but nets.
Thank you.

WorraLiberty · 12/04/2018 16:06

sheworebluevelet that's where personal responsibility comes into play.

If as the homeowner or tenant, you don't want people looking through your window, you make sure they can't.

It's ridiculous to think everyone else should change their habits to suit them.

Melamin · 12/04/2018 16:31

This reminds me of a neighbour I had that used to complain that the cat next door looked in her window as it walked past. I never knew what to say to her. She wasn't even joking Confused

namechange2222 · 12/04/2018 16:34

I bought privacy cream blinds from Dunelm for the whole of downstairs as had the same problem and didn't want nets
They're worth a look, let the light in but, in the day time, people cant see in. ( It doesn't work at night but I'd imagine you'd draw curtains by then)

maggienolia · 12/04/2018 16:43

A house I worked at had the 85 year old owner sitting facing the window naked from the waist down.
Doubt anybody looked in twice.

Tobestronger · 12/04/2018 16:45

Don't put a sign up.
We had a sign on our door (converted house and other flat had done a runner) and loads of people stopped to read it!

Chewandswallow · 12/04/2018 18:02

I had the same problem, put up some blinds, no longer a problem.
