People Looking In Lounge

headinhands · 12/04/2018 09:52

Public pavement runs past house lounge. No blinds or nets. People look in when they walk past. Would you put a sign up in the window saying 'please don't look in'?

Shutters, or a sheer roller blind.

Or decide it doesn't matter if people have a quick peek as they go past (what are you doing in there anyway Wink?)

BlondeB83 · 12/04/2018 10:11

Human nature! Get a blind up!

Notonthestairs · 12/04/2018 10:11

If I am not wearing my glasses I'd have to stop to read the sign.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 12/04/2018 10:11

My walk to and from work would be pretty dull if I just stared at the pavement. I do glance into people's houses just to break the monotony- there's a house near us that has recently had their living room knocked through into a kitchen diner. It's what we're thinking of doing and I'm tempted to knock and ask them about it because it looks great.

My reasoning is that people who don't have nets or blinds must be ok with people looking in or they'd put something up.

Eminybob · 12/04/2018 10:14

We are not even on the road, we have a front garden, then a stepped path up to the pavement, and people still stare in while their dogs are peeing up against my gatepost, the dirty fuckers.

SirGawain · 12/04/2018 10:14

YABVU. if you don't take sensible steps to protect your own privacy you can't really complain that people look in as they pass by.

Sunafterstorm · 12/04/2018 10:14

We once lived in a house right on a street and I caught a woman trying to peer through the window through the net curtains. I hammered on the window and probably frightened her witless.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 12/04/2018 10:17

We have this, with the added bonus of me working at our local school, so common to get kids waving (or other things). But I hate nets, shutters cut out too much light and blinds? No ta.

iffyjiffybag · 12/04/2018 10:21

Reflective film on the inside of the window is fun stuff. People can't see in but find it hard to resist checking themselves out as they walk past [Smile

NowToWork · 12/04/2018 10:24

Front gardens help a.s they naturally distract the eye.

Otherwise blinds or nets.

LakieLady · 12/04/2018 10:24

I'd walk round naked. No-one would want to risk a second glance at my blubbery bod.

JessicaJonesJacket · 12/04/2018 10:25

As a PP said, reflective film is best. People will check their reflection but they can't see in.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/04/2018 10:27

OP go and have a look in Dunelm, they have some lovely voiles in there, at reasonable prices. They still let plenty of light in.
It is human nature to glance in a well lit room on a gloomy/dark day, or if you're on the top deck of a bus !
Go and get some, stop the gawpers !

Ollivander84 · 12/04/2018 10:27

I keep my blinds down, same situation but you get stuff thrown at the windows or kids banging on if the blind is open

Ha. I used to live in a fairly famous building, in a tourist trap. Nothing like looking up from your museli to find a group of tourists aiming cameras through your window.

Blinds/half-shutters were our friends.

liz70 · 12/04/2018 10:30

My nan's house was like this - early 20th C terrace. When my mum and her brothers were growing up there with N and G in the 40s and 50s, every day life took place in the back room, away from the glare of passers by. The front room aka parlour was for special occasions, e.g. having guests round. It had the best furniture in, you'd get your naice teaset out and make sure you'd be smartly dressed. So you wouldn't mind people looking in and thinking, "Goodness me, don't Mrs Liz70'sNan and her friends look posh having tea together there."

Seems odd to think of it now. Grin

50sQueen · 12/04/2018 10:30

You chose a house with pavement in your door step so you have to accept that people will look in. It is human nature and with pp if you have no blinds you are inviting people to look in. Venetian blinds are your friend.

MargotLovedTom1 · 12/04/2018 10:30

Surely you can't see much when you look in though the daytime? When I'm walking the dog in the evening there are a fair few houses all lit up with no blinds or curtains drawn and the impulse to look is irresistible Wink.

A sign is a ridiculous idea though.

sheworebluevelet · 12/04/2018 10:30

I can't believe all the starers on here! It's so rude and plain bad manners. Of course your eye is drawn to light and movement but as adults you can then chose to look away.
You wouldn't stare at a person even if their looks were unusual. It's not ok to look into people windows.

liz70 · 12/04/2018 10:31

Mind, they still had nets up everywhere, back and front of house!

threelittledinosaurs · 12/04/2018 10:31

I had this issue. We put up blinds, slightly turned in so we still get some light. However it's a big living room with little windows, so we aren't getting much natural light anymore. Glad I saw this thread, as I think i will be getting the reflective glass film, which I didn't know existed, so we can have our natural light back!

mummyretired · 12/04/2018 10:33

I have a house like this with the added advantage of being on a double-decker bus route. Vertical blinds downstairs and nets upstairs mean I can do as I like when the lights are off - I've checked from the bus and the pavement and I can see them much better than they can see me.

I do warn visitors not to make a midnight streak to the bathroom without ensuring the bedroom/landing doors are shut!

MargotLovedTom1 · 12/04/2018 10:33

Ah I didn't notice that the pavement runs right past the window. There are front gardens where I am so my rubbernecking is a bit more discreet Wink.

Sign is still ridiculous. You need blinds or voiles.

YetAnotherUser · 12/04/2018 10:33

What does everyone else on the street have? I bet nobody else has a sign saying "do not look" 😂
