People Looking In Lounge

headinhands · 12/04/2018 09:52

Public pavement runs past house lounge. No blinds or nets. People look in when they walk past. Would you put a sign up in the window saying 'please don't look in'?

Just seen a lovely white carved wall screen that was fitted into a window,,on Nordic website
Sheer voile would give you some privacy.

MixedHerbs · 12/04/2018 10:36

I'd fit some bottom up blinds so that the light still comes in from the top half of the window. In deciding how high up to leave them, have a tall friend walk past repeatedly whilst you raise the blind.
If you don't like the idea of fittings, then you can get the Perfect Fit blinds that clip onto the beading of upvc windows (about the only pro of upvc), they are quite unobtrusive.

angryburd · 12/04/2018 10:36

Put up a sign 😂 that is the most MN thing I've ever read. Why not phone 101 while you're at it?

Elmosmum · 12/04/2018 10:36

Put the sign up! Grin

AuntFidgetWonkhamStrongNajork · 12/04/2018 10:38

I tend to have a bit of a glare-off with them. However I have been known to greet people in town, who have looked at me like I am bonkers, prompting me to think "where do know them from then?" only to realise that I only know them because they walk past my house on the way into town, and they wouldn't have a clue because they are not gawping through the window I am Hmm

HolyMountain · 12/04/2018 10:40

I’m terribly guilty of this if it’s a dark night and curtains are open, especially at Christmas I don’t stand and stare though.Grin

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/04/2018 10:42

Grin people would have to look in the window to read the sign telling them not to stare! Brilliant Grin

Bluntness100 · 12/04/2018 10:42

I used to live in a house like this. It's clearly batshit to have no window coverings and expect people to determinedly not look and protect your privacy , whilst you yourself chose to live in a house on a public thorough fare and deliberately take absolutely no steps to protect your own privacy, putting the onus on strangers to do it for you.. A sign is even more batshit, it will clearly make people look more, because that's what signs are designed for. To attract attention.

Just put nets or voiles up,

YoThePussy · 12/04/2018 10:42

Currently rubbing my hands as I am having shutters installed next week. Amazon do some very nice screens which are not too expensive. Also can be folded away when not needed. For those on double decker bus routes perfect for the night time bathroom rush if your curtains are not thick.

I have no front garden and when I moved here I found people rubbernecked all the time, new homeowner, new furniture to look at. Other houses in the row are now for sale so new victims to bait when they move in.

deadringer · 12/04/2018 10:43

I have zero interest in other people's houses, couldn't care less about their furniture or decor but for some reason my eye is always drawn to a bare window, especially if there is a light on. Windows are for looking through aren't they? Get a blind or put up with it. Yabu

WorraLiberty · 12/04/2018 10:43

You wouldn't stare at a person even if their looks were unusual. It's not ok to look into people windows.

Two completely different things.

A window doesn't have feelings...

snozzlemaid · 12/04/2018 10:45

Get some nice plain voiles. You don't have to have frilly horrible nets.

clothcollector · 12/04/2018 10:45

yes, brilliant idea, love it - sign will definitely workGrin!

HighwayDragon1 · 12/04/2018 10:47

The cheap white IKEA roller blinds are great, they let the Iggy in really well but obviously noone can see in!

GeorgeW78 · 12/04/2018 10:48

On holiday we stayed in a ground floor apartment on the seafront, the amount of people looking into the place instead of at the view we were enjoying was amazing! One woman did make us laugh though, she was walking & chatting with someone but dawdling and getting closer and closer before she put her hands up to the sides of her face and planted them on the window to get a really good look. She almost fell over when she saw us sat right there, she'd been sort of looking past us to the back of the long room and out the rear window! She stumbled backwards, looked terribly guilty, went bright red, mouth half open then put her hand up as if to say sorry and scuttled away. It was funny but I couldn't live somewhere like that!

Shizzlestix · 12/04/2018 10:48

A sign! I’m dying! I have nets on the one window passers by can see into and I give zero fucks about being cool, I value my privacy.

Velvetbee · 12/04/2018 10:49

I used to wave cheerily from the sofa in our old house, that stopped the buggers.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 12/04/2018 10:49

The pavement is about .5m from my living room window. We have shutters.

MyKingdomForBrie · 12/04/2018 10:49

I agree with snozzlemaid we had voile in my first house which was right on the pavement edge, it didn’t look bad at all.

SmileyBird · 12/04/2018 10:49

I love looking in peoples houses. My assumption is that if you didn’t like it you’d put blinds up.

A sign like that might make me press my nose up agains your window if I was feeling mischievous Grin

DanceDisaster · 12/04/2018 10:50

It’s natural to glance in, but not to gawp. Maybe specify “no gawping” on the sign. It’s only fair.

ratspeaker · 12/04/2018 10:51

There are several houses and flats around our way that have this.
I've seen several solutions that can look elegant.
One has stained glass panel hanging on bottom of window.
One has frosted glass film on bottom half of window.
One has pretty lacey nets ( from Ikea they look Victorian in keeping with the flat) and has the original shutters to close at night. ( my pal's house thats how I know).
One has louvered shutters.
My DD s bedroom windows look out over a footpath beyond the garden, she's put up some lovely voiles. Her cat still manages to sit directly in the window to get praise from passers by.

A sign would just attract more attention tbh.
May as well say "dont look at me Im shy" .
NO. DON'T LOOK HERE...
HERE. NO.

GeorgeW78 · 12/04/2018 10:53

The Ikea ones are plain and large but simple to cut to length and great value at £5 for 2. www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/textiles-rugs/curtains-blinds/lill-net-curtains-1-pair-white-art-90111980/

ParisUSM · 12/04/2018 10:54

I have laughed so much at the thought of a sign telling people not to look in, that's hysterical.

I used to live in a flat beside a chip shop and people would sit on my window ledge eating them - would never live anywhere right on the pavement again.

You need blinds.
