Syria, Russia and the U.S

AIBU to be very concerned about the latest events regarding Syria. It would seem the U.S is hell bent on a hot war in the region, the potential ripple effect would be catastrophic. Trumps tweet reads:

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!"

YANBU. I'm really frightened too

Heyduggeesflipflop · 11/04/2018 17:28

Putting aside trumps ‘diplomacy by twitter’, The question is how much provocation should Russia be allowed on the world stage before we say enough is enough?

Crimea, Ukraine, Syria, lityinvenko poisoning, cyber and propaganda warfare against western countries.... they are the proverbial playground bully.

In my view the current stand off has very little to do with Syria and everything to do with Russia. Was not the latter armed to the teeth with nuclear arms I suspect we would already be engaged in a regional ‘open’ war with Russia.

Pantomime

TulipsInAJug · 11/04/2018 17:34

Don't like Trump's tweet one bit, but we can't just keep appeasing Putin.

Sandsnake · 11/04/2018 17:36

I agree with duggee. Trump is a phenomenal twat; his Twitter activity is ridiculous and unhelpful. But he didn’t start this and I wouldn’t say he’s the one who has been acting as if he’s ‘hell bent’ on war in the region. It’s Russia who is the one provoking conflict. As for what we (as in the West) should do - I just don’t know what’s for the best. It feels like a lose / lose situation for us, but nowhere near as much as it is for those poor people in Syria.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 11/04/2018 17:41

Russia now feels a bit like Germany in the 1930s - this is a country that feels isolated and denied its proper place and role in the world. The more cornered it becomes, the more dangerous it is.

I firmly believe that any missile strikes now will really be aimed at Russian bases in Syria. Russia also have a problem as they presumably deny that such exist, and therefore cannot admit that is the case.

It’s a really difficult problem to solve. As I say though, it proves the value of nuclear deterrence - even trump would think twice before taking open action against a nation with a declared first use nuclear strike capability.

If only the leaders could sit down and discuss this over a nice cup of tea. Make tea, not war.

user1492877024 · 11/04/2018 17:53

I don't think Cyprus would be a good choice of holiday destination in the very near future.

WrongOnTheInternet · 11/04/2018 18:15

This isn't the first thread on this. The other ones have a nice link to this video of a former British ambassador questioning whether the alleged Russian attacks have actually taken place.

Apparently it would be good timing for Trump to find someone else for Americans to have a go at as he's been having flings with a porn star and got various homefront issues.

It's all very strange, but there might be nothing in it beyond trumping.

BetterEatCheese · 11/04/2018 18:31

Compressed politics written to be headline grabbing is not helpful.

user1492877024 · 11/04/2018 18:41

Yep. I do not believe for one moment that Assad carried out this attack, nor do I believe Russia are responsible for targeting the father and daughter in Salisbury. Incidentally, Putin did say a couple of months ago that there would be another chemical attack in Syria soon, also, that the West would use it as an excuse to try and oust Assad.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 11/04/2018 19:05

User - are you a russian troll perchance?

I will say this about the Russians - they have mastered the art of using the internet as a new tool of state conflict...

AloaBoa · 11/04/2018 19:16

Remember Iraq and wmd when it comes to believing anything from the American or British authorities. Millions of people have been displaced and killed as as result of that lie. They lie because they want war, same as before.

This is going getting very dangerous. Trump may start a serious war to distract from his legal woes. The consequences of such could go nuclear very fast. If you want war with Russia, it will be nuclear and if Putin thinks his country is under attack, he's promised to wipe out the rest of the world.

Warmongering is idiocy, I think since for so many years western warmongering just killed and destroyed entire populations and countries far away from us that people imagine that this will always be so in the future. Eventually, the wrong country will be provoked... Russia has thousands of nukes and a willingness to use them.

As for the new fashion of declaring everybody who questions the pro war establishment claims as a Russian troll, in the Bush era those of us who questioned wmd were branded Islamic extremists or communists... When you have no argument for truth because you're lying, you need to brand your opponents.

MadgeMidgerson · 11/04/2018 19:26

I listened to Robin Cook’s resignation speech (given days before the invasion of Iraq) on Radio 4 the othe day, they replayed it in full.

It was interesting to say the least to hear him demolish the many bad faith arguments which were made in favour of invasion, particularly so in light of the current crisis.

I don’t know who is lying- everyone is twisting events to fit their own agenda, including whoever is thought of as ‘the good guys’. I worry about where all of this will lead- more chaos, more blood shed and more death.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 11/04/2018 19:29

You cannot get away from the fact putin and Russia are on the wrong side of history. Conspiracy theories about us or the usa framing them may make you feel smug and superior but the reality is Russia has invaded Crimea and Ukraine (whilst professing innocence) and is giving active military assistance to Assad in Syria.

Oh dear, is that the best you can do. Soooo, the Daily Mail says that Assad/ Putin are evil, so it must be true. I expect you believed Blair's 'weapons' of mass destruction too. I ndespair, I really do.

AtlantaGinandTonic · 11/04/2018 19:35

YANBU. I'm worried. I also have a friend who lives in Tel Aviv and I'm really worried about her and her family.

Yep, terrifying isn't it, the number of posters on here that believe everything the Daily Fail says.

Really? What evidence (other than the Sun and Daily Mail) do you have to back up your statement?
