To declare this being officially an adult?

It's my birthday coming up, and I am genuinely hoping for socks.

That's it, isn't it? This is the point when one is absolutely an adult. Non of this turning 18 bollocks.

Just to compound the point, I also make a strange "oomph"ing noise when I get up and I went into a pub the other day and said, with no irony, "Music's a bit loud."

I also have an unexplainable desire for a steam mop.

AIBU?

For me, it was when I started looking at tweed in a favourable light. Grandfatherhood has helped me regress though.

Ollivander84 · 12/04/2018 01:08

I bought pop socks Blush

GlueSticks · 12/04/2018 01:20

I just bookmarked the post with how to fold a fitted sheet. Not so long ago I'd have been out drinking and shagging at 1am, now I'm excited by folding sheets.

Whiterabbitears · 12/04/2018 01:26

I was trying on sandals yesterday and actually heard myself say in a pleased tone "these are practical" Blush all hope of looking young and trendy is lost.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 12/04/2018 05:47

Queenofthedrivensnow well, quite! Grin

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 12/04/2018 05:50

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 12/04/2018 05:55

Disgrace you seem far too young to wear tweed! Or is that the influence of DGS? Grin

x2boys · 12/04/2018 08:17

I have a steam mop and its not all I hoped it would be tbh Sad

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 12/04/2018 08:29

@Ollivander84, one third of my sock drawer is pop socks.

Black, grey and tan.

The rest is black socks (trouser) and black sports socks. 😳

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 12/04/2018 08:30

That oyboy link is a bit too racy for my liking. 😳😳😳😳

QueenofSerene · 12/04/2018 08:59

Hah my DH had this moment when for his 30th last year he asked his mum for a chest freezer so we could go shopping in bulk and I could have somewhere to store my meal prepping before we had baby #2 lol

The thing that makes me feel most like an adult is that when I do any exercise, afterwards I'm in so much pain that I definitely think I've injured myself, but I haven't, it's just that that's what exercise feels like when you're over 40. I mean it tails off a bit when I get into regular exercise, but still like a good day now is like how it felt in my 20s if I went running after 6 months of inactivity.

That and I have the date marked on the calendar for when Lidl had its fruit bushes in. 3 euro 50! But that's just middle age - I won't be properly old until I start buying bedding plants.

x2boys · 12/04/2018 09:36

And ask for cuttings of other peoples plants toomuch?

nevereverhaveieverfeltsolow · 12/04/2018 09:45

Oh god I've just got a steam mop and love it and I'm wearing bamboo socks - I didn't even know they were a thing - how come they are more cosy and comfy? They are but I don't know why!!

Letloose · 12/04/2018 09:52

I always get strange looks as it is (I’m a young mum to 3 DDs my eldest being 9) I got a new Hoover for Christmas and cried my mum just looked at me like WTF

prettymess · 12/04/2018 09:57

I bought a nest of tables.

CaptainWarbeck · 12/04/2018 10:02

When I ask my mum what she wants for her birthday she invariably says she wants bags of compost.

I love this.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 12/04/2018 10:08

DH asked for (and got) a large plant pot and money for paint for the bathroom.

Albatross26 · 12/04/2018 10:09

When I found myself settling on the sofa with a cuppa and going 'ooh midsomer murders is on' and being genuinely pleased.

Loonoon · 12/04/2018 10:11

I just folded a fitted sheet! I feel invincible.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 12/04/2018 10:16

The true definition of realising you're a grown up is when you check the supermarket websites to see which one has the best deal on toilet rolls! Also, I think I knew I was a grown-up when I started to freeze leftover food for another day. When I was young, the thought that it was a waste of money to throw it away would never have occurred to me...

dalecooper · 12/04/2018 10:47

I used to be a bit of a girl about town in my late teens and twenties and loved clubbing and clothes and generally hanging around having a good time. Now, my favourite part of the day is when I can put my fluffy dressing gown on and take my make up off. 7pm is the latest I like to leave it.
I also find myself saying things like "I must cut the grass and get the windows cleaned" (who IS this woman?) and take great pleasure in looking at cleaning products online. I just bought myself a caddy with a handle that contains all my most used cleaning products so I can just pick it up and go to whichever room I am working on. I love it, it is my favourite purchase that I have made in months.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 12/04/2018 10:53

I also have bamboo socks. Dm bought them and I was delighted!

I have started cleaning at work. In my drawers I have packets of baby wipes, fairy liquid and sponges. The slatterns I work with are slobs. They also can't be trusted with my cleaning items. I wipe down the monitors and keyboards. I found a spray dister cannon Poundland the other day I was thrilled.
The rest of my team always want to sit where I did the day before because I've cleaned. I know I'm old!!

toomuchtooold · 12/04/2018 12:14

And ask for cuttings of other peoples plants toomuch

Oh god like my mother in law. And she doesn't ask. You can't go into a garden or park without her nipping off a shoot of something or other and secreting it away in a damp hanky that I'm sure she keeps in her handbag for that very purpose Smile

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 12/04/2018 12:30

I'm a member of a union who have a recruitment display in the canteen today.

They're offering free gifts to people who sign up or who are already members and I told them I didn't need anything.

I walked away with a leaflet about writing wills.....
