To declare this being officially an adult?

It's my birthday coming up, and I am genuinely hoping for socks.

That's it, isn't it? This is the point when one is absolutely an adult. Non of this turning 18 bollocks.

Just to compound the point, I also make a strange "oomph"ing noise when I get up and I went into a pub the other day and said, with no irony, "Music's a bit loud."

I also have an unexplainable desire for a steam mop.

For me it was when I realised I didn't understand half the words the teenagers are using. It's like a completely new and baffling language. I'm constantly having to refer to urban dictionary for help.

AlexaAmbidextra · 11/04/2018 15:28

A brand new garden shed did it for me. Grin

MessyMcDoogle · 11/04/2018 15:31

When I wrestled my brand new chest freezer down into the cellar and was so excited, I went out immediately and bought A LOT of frozen vegetables, meats etc 'because you never know when you'll be short of broccoli' Hmm

When I realised I'd turned my cellar into a larder instead of a sex dungeon Hmm

Excited to get all the washing finally done Living the dream

StylishMummy · 11/04/2018 15:34

Cooking my first Sunday roast was so exciting, when I did my first Christmas dinner I practically combusted with the excitement of it! Also love socks, slippers and 'naice' food bits for gifts. I'm 25Grin

When I ask my mum what she wants for her birthday she invariably says she wants bags of compost.

I always ignored her and buy something expensive and pretty but worryingly I’m starting to see what she means. Also I have Radio 4 on all the time and I’ve started to fancy Michael Portillo.

krustykittens · 11/04/2018 15:36

I have both a steam mop and bamboo socks and they are both marvellous! My proper grown up moment came when I realised how expensive wheelbarrows are - who knew?! But I am regressing in some ways. I used to collect dolls when I was a child and have got back into the hobby as dolls are a lot more interesting now. My birthday wish list this year is all dolls and doll related stuff. Because now I am old enough not to care what people think! My 20 year old self would be horrified at how uncool and childish I am and I blow raspberries at her just to prove her point!

When I realised how much I really want to watch the programme next Monday with David Attenborough and the Queen !!

On Saturday I treated myself to a new flavour of fabric conditioner. Then I kept going in the spare bedroom just so I could smell it. Then when DH wore the jumper that'd been washed in it, we had a five minute conversation about how nice it smelled and whether it was nicer than the old one and how to judge given cost implications too.

Last week I practically orgasmed putting the first wash of the year on the line.

Last year I bought a double retractable washing line with five good quality props. I almost wept with excitement in B&Q

The other day at work the radio was on when I was in the room with a yoof. I asked him how long this bloody song was and he informed me about four songs had been on in the time I'd been there. I told him it all sounded the same to me.

A few weeks ago I went clubbing with colleagues. I felt ill for a week- not because of drinking (I didn't drink much) but because I was up past 10pm, because the music was too loud, because there were too many people, because the kebab was too salty, because I put my back out dancing. One of the yoofs out with us commented, with a look of absolutely wonderment and surprise, that I could "really move for an older woman". I'm 32.

BadTasteFlump · 11/04/2018 15:43

Ha - I was giving Ds1 directions to somewhere on a new(ish) estate the other day - and actually said 'when I was your age, it was all just fields..' Shock

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/04/2018 15:44

As long as you don't ask for a cardie ("A nice brown one"), I think you are pretty safe for a while.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 11/04/2018 15:44

I knew I was getting old (not older, just old) when I swapped the car radio preset channel from Radio 1 to Radio 3 because everything Radio 1 played made me want to tear off my own ears in horror.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/04/2018 15:46

I’ve started to fancy Michael Portillo

Voluntary euthanasia is legal in some countries tries MaryLou. You don't have to put up with this.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 11/04/2018 15:49

I have been drooling at the "Dry Soon" heated drying rails with tents on Lakeland today. I've just had my birthday, so I'll have to wait for Christmas to be able to do laundry better!

When on holiday, I worry about the cat and plants, make sure I take daytime flights so as not to have to get up in the middle of the night, always use the closest, most expensive airport parking and get a big hire car when I get there. Holidays are getting expensive!

I'd sooner have a glass of wine and watch a film at home with DH than go out.

Petalflowers · 11/04/2018 15:49

Years ago had a conversation about the price of carrots in shops. Felt old then.

EnormousDormouse · 11/04/2018 15:54

Buying proper, good quality appliances with a long warranty rather than just going for the cheapest possible.
I have more than one steam mop. Shoot me.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 11/04/2018 15:54

@slightlyjaded your local library should have a which account you can use to log into online as a one off if you only need it sporadically. Call and ask!

IHateToCashew · 11/04/2018 15:55

This thread has me now coveting a steam mop ... I'm fantasising about steam cleaning DS's toys rather than lovingly hand washing them.

SouthernComforts · 11/04/2018 15:57

My moment was when I saw pictures of a new bar opening in town with lots on comfy sofas, and my first thought was 'ooh it will be nice to have somewhere you can go in and sit down' Blush

SouthernComforts · 11/04/2018 15:58

Oh, and I have a co-op membership card.

Bamboo socks are joyous.

In some respects I've always been older than my years. I've always bought shoes for comfort and when I left home aged 20 the first 'luxury' thing I bought was a teasmade. At the same age, I wouldn't go into a pub if I couldn't get a seat. There was a design craze in the 90's for ripping out all the longsaddles and putting stupid tall tables in. Grim.

OTOH, I was a bit miffed when colouing became 'a thing', because I never grew out if it and some friends called me weird, juvenile or eccentric for my Crayola collection. Guess what they are evangelizing about now?
I have also bought myself various 'kids stuff' that I coveted as a child but couldn't have because we were skint.

In my head, I can be nine years old or a very sterotypical grumpy pensioner depending on the situation. I am in my forties.

Onesmallstepforaman · 11/04/2018 16:07

Folding fitted sheets? Please enlighten me, I wrestle with the bloody things and usually end up swearing before chucking it in the airing cupboard.

AChickenCalledKorma · 11/04/2018 16:18

I am currently enjoying a nice cup of tea in a cafe while my daughter and her friend shop.

I've already bought two pairs of trousers (with elasticated waists, natch) and a pair of comfy shoes. And thanks to you lot I now really fancy some new socks.

There's no fighting it, is there?!

I may have to pop into Smiggle, just to marvel at how little I want to buy any of it.

SlightlyJaded · 11/04/2018 16:57

ZigZag that might be the most useful piece of information i have ever received in my ten very active years on mumsnet. Grin
