Loads of shops, bars and restaurants are now allowing dogs in them.
I'm very allergic and one of my dc is too.
It's so widespread now. Such little thought for those with allergies.

It is like this in my town now too, there has been a local campaign on facebook to get places to sign up as dog friendly. A few dogs in a large relaxed bar on the floor was a novelty a few years ago. Then I noticed some owners were letting their dogs curl up on the armchairs there, which I didn’t like so much. Then in another small cafe my friend (who is allergic to dogs) and I were literally climbed over by a dog whose owner pushed past us to sit opposite the only other dog owner in there, all the while their dogs angrily snarling at each other. The dog didn’t settle down and she didn’t remove it. We had to move to another table.
The restaurant we went to the other night had a dog bowl beside most tables. Last time we were there a dog was barking for about five minutes. I am with you OP.

BellBookandCandle · 11/04/2018 08:25

I think that we all meet conscientious dog owners more regularly than we realise. It's just that their dogs are well behaved and do we don't register them. Just the same as with children, it's always the poor behaviour/rude mannered encounters people remember.

I don't allow my dogs to approach other people or dogs as I appreciate that not everyone is a fan.

I don't understand the hysteria in some posts - what germs have dogs passed on to people? As far as I know there are not many zooetropic diseases passed between dogs and humans, though people with some autoimmune diseases do need to be careful around bird, cat and dog faeces. My (in some posters opinions) filthy, unhygenic, slobbering, shit and piss producing, hair shedding stink monsters dogs have never had fleas, ticks or worms never mind shared them with me. DD, on the other hand has managed to pass on nits on a couple of occasions and DS kindly shared his chickenpox with me. Filthy creatures Grin

I have every sympathy with people with allergies - I have, amongst others, an allergy to long furred cats and dogs as well as to lanolin and to wool and the fibres it gives off. Going out in winter is no fun - hats, scarves, overcoats, jumpers all trigger an allergic reaction. It's frustrating but it's my problem to deal with.

Dogs and humans have coexisted for centuries. They've been domesticated for a reason. No-one has to like them or have one, but like many things on earth, they exist and as humans we need to learn to co-exist with them and appreciate them for the help they give us.

onefootinthegrave · 11/04/2018 08:26

Sorry - that was to ginger genius (debatable)

OneStepSideways · 11/04/2018 08:27

I've noticed it too. I hate having to step over sprawled out dogs on my way to the bar. They're so smelly too, not pleasant when you're eating in a restaurant. I don't mind tiny dogs in public places (chichahuas, pugs, tiny poodles etc) as they sit on the owner's lap but bigger look threatening. I'm worried my toddler will step on one or throw something at it (she's nervous of big dogs).

I can imagine how hard it must be if you have allergies!

BrownTurkey · 11/04/2018 08:28

These places local to me don’t say on the door if they are dog friendly or not. How is OP to know someone with a dog won’t come in just after she has ordered? Its a big change in policy for so many places to allow dogs, and has caused a significant inconvenience to OP.

Idontdowindows · 11/04/2018 08:29

I love dogs, but I believe there's a time and a place and it's not in shops, coffee places, restaurants etc. etc. etc. unless they're service dogs.

monkeysox · 11/04/2018 08:29

Squirrels read the link I posted.

Dogs are unhygenic animals and shouldn't be allowed anywhere were there is food or clothes being retailed.
Yes I've seen quite a few 'dog friendly' signs in cafes and shops and we avoid them.

MrPan · 11/04/2018 08:34

And if you have a dog, do not let it jump up at me. I did not ask to be mauled, dirtied or barked at. I will react in a way you and your dog would not like.

mydogisthebest · 11/04/2018 08:35

I take it that all those with dog allergies or just dislike dogs don't go on holiday to Europe?

It's far more common to see dogs everywhere, including restaurants, in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany than it is in the UK.

We have been on holiday in France with our dog and it is so much better knowing he is welcome just about everywhere. We are considerate though. When we eat at a restaurant (as opposed to a snack in a café) we sit outside. Our dog is quite big and although he will lay quietly by our side it is just easier to sit outside with more room.

Lots of French though think we are mad sitting outside because of the dog even when the weather is nice. They all sit inside and often the dogs sit on the chairs round the table

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 11/04/2018 08:36

So you hate dogs as well as car drivers Mr Pan? That figures Grin

MrPan · 11/04/2018 08:36

We do go on holiday in Europe. And avoid dogs there too.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/04/2018 08:37

blurry I live in London, and pubs and cafés near parks allow dogs, presumably because dog owners are good customers.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 11/04/2018 08:38

And if you have a dog, do not let it jump up at me. I did not ask to be mauled, dirtied or barked at. I will react in a way you and your dog would not like.

Nice. But I wouldn't expect anything less from you.

MrPan · 11/04/2018 08:39

No, I used to have two dogs. Beautiful colle dogs. Very well trained and behaved well because of that.

Sadly there are way too many dog owners who don't bother with dog care and see their dog's problems as everyone else's problem t odeal with.

And I don't hate car drivers - Iam one. Soo Nur! Smile

MrPan · 11/04/2018 08:40

I am glad we understand each other then Great

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/04/2018 08:42

Widdlin DD has sensory issues. The smell of greasy food makes her retch. I've tried (mostly successfully) to bring her up with your attitude. Just avoid places that serve greasy food.

Elphame · 11/04/2018 08:43

Last night down the local pub - Elfpup is snoozing gently by my feet. Small child (who should have been in bed hours ago as it's very late and he's clearly very overtired) screaming blue murder....

I know which I prefer when I visit a pub

Ickyockycocky · 11/04/2018 08:43

I like dogs so much more than I like people.

mydogisthebest · 11/04/2018 08:44

Well if you manage to avoid the dogs in Europe where there are far far more dog friendly places then it should be very easy here

Shadowboy · 11/04/2018 08:47

I can imagine this is the case in touristy places- I’m grateful for it to be honest as we have a dog but I do understand how difficult it can be for those with allergies. My husband and youngest as highly allergic to cats and there are a few pubs, and shops where there is a resident cat.

I guess these business overall get more income by allowing the dogs in, than not allowing them.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 11/04/2018 08:48

Lol at allergies. I’m so allergic to horses yet I own six and manage not to be constantly hampered - what are you doing to these unhygienic, savage dogs in all these bars - rubbing your faces in them.

We live rurally, we are farmers, quite often enjoy being able to nip into the local pubs and shops on a walk and the woofters being allowed inside. Sometimes we encounter dog haters, I stress on our holiday cottages website we are very dog friendly and I still get some idiots complaining about it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 11/04/2018 08:48

You used to have two "beautiful dogs" but you vehemently refuse to eat or holiday where they're might be other dogs?

I find that really, really strange. Dog lovers are dog lovers whoever they belong to.

redpickle · 11/04/2018 08:51

I'm with you OP. At the very least it's a hygiene issue in places where food is served. Yuk!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 11/04/2018 08:51

Also, I met Matthew Wright's beautiful dog Wiggy in a pub garden! I did apologise to Matthew that I was far more interested in his dog! Grin
