Repeal the 8th

So DH and I are currently visiting my DF and DStepM in Southern Ireland (where I grew up).

Just answered the door to a couple who are looking for support in the referendum and wanted us to pledge that we would vote no.

No for context I am just 6 weeks away from giving birth to DC3 (so clearly very heavily pregnant) and they still had the audacity to argue with me when I said I didn't agree with them and I supported any woman's right to decide what happens to her body.

They started trying to show me pictures of 10 week old babies in the womb (not necessary obviously in the circumstances) and weren't pleased that I didn't agree with them given that I'm carrying a baby myself.

I'm sorry I don't really have an actual AIBU I just wanted to rant a bit and show support for the people who have to face this absolute shit every day until the referendum. We're going home to the UK on Thursday so I won't have it all thrown in my face anymore but I just think the guilt tripping is horrendous 😞

Please share far and wide. Really demonstrates the cruelty of the 8th amendment. I really don’t see how anybody could watch this and then vote No.

(Trigger warning- discusses FFA and travelling for abortion)

AdelicaArundel · 18/05/2018 09:00

Angelo
I'm in tears. Thank you- that cuts to the heart of it, doesn't it.

Why should any one have to be a "walking tomb" as one woman said. Away from their families.

I don't "agree" with abortion as a concept...but if I am in these woman's shoes, I want the option to make the best decision for me. And not have anyone else impose it on me.

Wakemeuuuup · 18/05/2018 14:38

I've just watched the Taoiseach's interview on radio 1 and he makes so much sense. It's brilliant that Ireland has a young leader who is willing to put his neck on the line like this. Good luck next Friday

Trinity66 · 21/05/2018 11:51

Getting nervous now. Discovered my father is a No voter (well he can't actually vote because he'll be on holiday yay) but thankfully his 3 sons don't share his views!

So has anyone who applied to be on the supplementary register gotten a polling card yet? Or do you even get one?

HalfStar · 21/05/2018 11:53

Yes, I got one.

HalfStar · 21/05/2018 11:53

Yes, I got one.

Trinity66 · 21/05/2018 11:54

Are you on the normal register or the supplementary one?

AngeloMysterioso · 21/05/2018 13:07

I made the mistake of watching one of those "proud to be pro life" videos on YT yesterday and it gave me rage. How can people be so short sighted?!

N0tLinked1n · 21/05/2018 17:35

Omg disgusting prolifers with banners at belfield bridge

heateallthebuns · 21/05/2018 17:50

Two young early 20s people were in the queue in front of me in Dunnes today. The man said to the girl 'I went to a pro choice rally yesterday, they were all shouting things at me like you have no uterus so no right to an opinion' and he was laughing like it was so ridiculous and confusing. It made me think that some young men just have such a simple black and white view of life. It's true, they've never had to live through complicated messy events which don't have a right or wrong answer, but where people are just trying to do their best. It must be nice to live in such a simple clear cut world.

corcaithecat · 21/05/2018 19:46

Why is the No campaign allowed to get away with printing such outrageous lies on their posters?

Daughters Polling card arrived!

HalfStar · 22/05/2018 10:52

Trinity sorry no I applied for the supplementary register as couldn't find our details on normal one...investigation led to us being on normal register after all Hmm it was confusing and the whole register system needs overhauling.

Last few days now folks, anxious feeling all the time.

Trinity66 · 22/05/2018 10:56

Thanks Halfstar, my daughters arrived anyway so panic over.

I post on another forum, a UK based one and someone just asked, Is it right that we're trying to get unrestricted abortion for up to 6 months? "No" propaganda spreading across the water. getting worried about it now, i wish it was over already

Fabricwitch · 22/05/2018 11:17

Im getting more and more upset and angry over this.
I can't understand how anyone could think it's ok to take away women's human rights unless they genuinely believe than women are lesser beings than men.
I have found out that I have one friend voting no. I had 2 others voting no who have now told me they are undecided/won't vote, but I don't know if I believe them.
It's really hard feeling like life-long friends and relatives believe at the core that women are lesser than men.
Out of these 3 people, 2 of them are women. And they are all below the age of 26.
The eighth amendment doesn't even stop abortions, it just stops vulnerable women being taken care of.
So, no OP, YANBU Flowers

My father is voting No and yes I think he genuinely believes that women are less important than men. He's shouting about the poor babies right to be born, most especially babies with Downs Syndrome because he told me that in Iceland because of abortion Downs Syndrome is virtually eradicated. Here he is telling me all this, his daughter, who he "raised" I use that term lightly because he had 4 children, none of which had any special needs but he still couldn't be bothered to help my mother raise us, she may as well have been a single mother. So yeah, let all the babies be born and someone else (female) can look after them too. I said to him, "If it was men that had the babies this wouldn't even be a question being asked" He said well "that's what you're designed to do" .....seriously said that.

Anyway, as my mother actually was the one who had any real input in our lives, myself and his 3 sons will all be voting Yes.

Trinity66 · 22/05/2018 11:44

Actually i started that post with "My father is voting No" that's not true, he would like to vote No but unfortunately he's away on holiday, Darn!! Grin

Fabricwitch · 22/05/2018 12:04

Trinity66 I'm so sorry your dad said that to you. The attitude a lot of no voters seem to have is less pro-life and more pro-birth.
One of the people who I know that are undecided (but previously had been campaigning for a no vote) is my brother. He hasn't said anything like that and I feel uncomfortable pointing out that it must be what he is thinking as I don't want to ruin our relationship. My parents are both upset that he was/is planning on voting no as they both raised us to respect men and women equally.
Luckily 3 people out of all the people I know isn't that many, but with all the posters and no protesters I see around here I fear it won't get repealed Sad

Trinity66 · 22/05/2018 12:11

That reminded me of something I saw posted on FB from a Nun, very wise woman. Sorry about your brother too, t's such an emotive and divisive topic, i just can't wait till it's over now tbh

Katiepoes · 22/05/2018 12:37

I wish I could still vote, I've done what I can by contributing money, sharing information (facts not No fables) where I can.

I'm happy seeing that two people I'd have considered very conservative and likely No voters are pushing Yes on Facebook, and my undecided brother has finally come down on Yes too, I just hope there's enough of them.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 22/05/2018 19:44

It's really upset me the last couple of days the amount of people I know that are voting no. All women under the age of 30 (most mid 20's).

One woman's Facebook post actually said she thought that women should have the right to decide what happens to their body and no one else should be able to make that decision...but she's voting no. Work that one out?

I've had to just remove people from my friends list but I genuinely can't argue with ignorant twats.

I can’t bloody wait for all this to be over! This morning three lunatics almost caused a crash at a narrow bridge on my route to work with their bloody signs (these were pro repeal). I’m sick to the back teeth of the lunatic fringe element on BOTH sides of the campaign at this stage.

RonWeasleys2ndCousin · 22/05/2018 19:58

What's the true figure roughly, if 1 in 5 isn't accurate (bc it doesn't include miscarriages?

I'm in the north so can't vote. Have always been firmly pro-choice but that figure did make me balk a bit.

I'd say more young ones than you might think are actually quite anti-choice. Especially if Catholic and of a judgey bent (which seems to be more what it's about, than actual devout beliefs IYSWIM).

Also is anyone else uncomfortable with hearing people say "oh but it's only all right if it was rape or incest"- I mean I know it's better than no access at all, but it seems to imply any woman who just went and had sex consensually, well then, she deserves to have to raise a child afterwards as punishment for being a slut.

Fabricwitch · 22/05/2018 21:55

@RonWeasleys2ndCousin

The figure is actually for every 5 babies born, 1 is aborted, so 1 in 6. The 1 in 5 is an outright lie.
If you remove women who travel to the UK from other countries to get abortions it would probably be more like 1 in 7 (just from a quick google search and metal arithmetic).
I don't know about including misscarriage, we would need to look at statistics of whether woman who have misscarriages are more or less likely to have planned their pregnancy? I would assume it's the same, but someone might know otherwise.

But 91% of women donate their bodies to create life before the age of 45.
Only 4% of men in the UK donate blood regularly, and that's just blood, to save someone's life.
