Repeal the 8th

So DH and I are currently visiting my DF and DStepM in Southern Ireland (where I grew up).

Just answered the door to a couple who are looking for support in the referendum and wanted us to pledge that we would vote no.

No for context I am just 6 weeks away from giving birth to DC3 (so clearly very heavily pregnant) and they still had the audacity to argue with me when I said I didn't agree with them and I supported any woman's right to decide what happens to her body.

They started trying to show me pictures of 10 week old babies in the womb (not necessary obviously in the circumstances) and weren't pleased that I didn't agree with them given that I'm carrying a baby myself.

I'm sorry I don't really have an actual AIBU I just wanted to rant a bit and show support for the people who have to face this absolute shit every day until the referendum. We're going home to the UK on Thursday so I won't have it all thrown in my face anymore but I just think the guilt tripping is horrendous 😞

bananas I laughed at John mc's tantrum
He was just short of stamping his feet
"I'm right you're wrong, it's not fair"

Unfortunately many will agree with him 😡

Interesting article here, some nice arguments in there.

www.refinery29.uk/2018/05/191047/irish-abortion-referendum-pro-life-choice-argument

Could be useful to point undecideds towards, it's a very calm article.

Annasgirl · 15/05/2018 07:58

Did any of you watch the TV debate last night? I was away and as I am decided I don't think it is directed at me. Do you think it would have swayed an undecided one way or the other?

OkPedro · 15/05/2018 10:20

annasgirl I watched and actually feel it might sway the undecided to a no vote 😩

The no side were favoured during the whole debate

They didn't hear from TFMR
They allowed one non doctor/solicitor/politician on the yes side to speak at the end for about 20 seconds

There was a woman who regretted hers and many doctors who were from the no side

The booing, laughing and calling out from the no side went unchallenged
They tried to discredit Dr Boylan

I thought Mary Lou McDonald did a great job she held her own even as she was shouted down and spoken over

If the no side had been treated that way there would be calls of a fix and one sided debate

I really don't think it'll be a yes vote on the 25th
I'm so disappointed
All the hard work for nothing

snuffykins · 15/05/2018 11:10

It was a disgrace. I mailed a complaint to Rte this morning as I believe it breached the broadcasting act.

Claire Byrne had no control as a moderator, the no side were given significantly more time, including the no audience members. The yes side were not given proper opportunities to answer points and the lies told by the no side were not pulled up.

A complete shambles by Rte.

OkPedro · 15/05/2018 11:44

Who do I email to complain snuffykins ?

Annasgirl · 15/05/2018 11:48

Yes I heard Dr Boylan on Pat Kenny say the TFMR parents were invited on and then not allowed to speak. I get so angry when I think that my rights as a woman are being voted on - and many people who vote are being swayed by lies.

OkPedro · 15/05/2018 12:05

I follow TFMR on fb
One woman said her elderly mother was visibly upset at how their tragedies were being spoken about and then they weren't allowed speak! I'm fuming now!

mrsmunch2000 · 15/05/2018 12:10

info on complaining to Broadcasting authority here: www.bai.ie/en/viewers-listeners/complaints/

shocking even that there weren't numbers given at the end for the support phone lines - even the soaps can manage that much

Disabled People Together for Yes similarly invited & not allowed contribute

snuffykins · 15/05/2018 12:45

I'd recommend quoting the sections of the broadcasting act you think we're breached in your complaint to Rte too. I cited 39 (1) (b). If you Google Rte complaints it gives the act and the address to email.

Does anyone have any hope for the yes side prevailing? Confused

I'm starting to be consumed by thoughts of what happens if there's a no result.

Things will carry on as they have been... women will either be forced to travel to mainland UK for abortions or order pills online illegally, be forced to carry babies with FFA to term only to watch them die in pain a few hours after birth or have to leave the country to have them delivered pre-term, continue to be refused treatment for other illnesses if it can affect the foetus, and have little to no say in their maternity care.

Ireland will continue to wash its hands of the problem whilst claiming the moral high ground.

Maybe in 30 or so years time there'll be another referendum.

AngeloMysterioso · 17/05/2018 14:13

As you can tell the prospect makes me quite angry.

Polls still suggest that Yes will go through but there's still a large percentage undecided

I guess I mean by 'what happens if there's a no' is how we all (yes voters) can deal mentally with the status quo.

I've 3 daughters, can't believe they could still face this nonsense in their time.

Hugh I think you're right there.

Anyone hear John Waters telling Eamon Dunphy to fuck off and that he was a fucking bollocks Grin?

Hilariously, Eamon says he’s a No voter!

Both Sides, right? Hmm

I got an automatic response immediately after I sent it, but nothing since. I've heard people saying they got similar to the one you got.

OkPedro · 17/05/2018 18:39

I didn't get a reply 😡
