Repeal the 8th

So DH and I are currently visiting my DF and DStepM in Southern Ireland (where I grew up).

Just answered the door to a couple who are looking for support in the referendum and wanted us to pledge that we would vote no.

No for context I am just 6 weeks away from giving birth to DC3 (so clearly very heavily pregnant) and they still had the audacity to argue with me when I said I didn't agree with them and I supported any woman's right to decide what happens to her body.

They started trying to show me pictures of 10 week old babies in the womb (not necessary obviously in the circumstances) and weren't pleased that I didn't agree with them given that I'm carrying a baby myself.

I'm sorry I don't really have an actual AIBU I just wanted to rant a bit and show support for the people who have to face this absolute shit every day until the referendum. We're going home to the UK on Thursday so I won't have it all thrown in my face anymore but I just think the guilt tripping is horrendous 😞

How are you undecided then? You want a womens life to take precedence: that won't happen if you vote no. More women will die because of the 8th. You want women to have control over their own bodies in hospitals: that won't happen if you vote no. You want people to get access to termination for FFA, a no vote condems thousands more people to have to leave the country.

How can you be undecided if those are things you think are important? How can you even think of voting no?

peanut2017 · 01/05/2018 21:19

Out for dinner with friends on Saturday and this topic came up.! One of my friends is going to vote no. I couldn't really engage in the conversation as I found myself getting angry which I knew wasn't the right approach.

I have personal experience of this which she doesn't know and I now feel I was right to never told her.

I can see how people can fall out over this topic

LuluMarie · 01/05/2018 21:20

DougFargo

Which human right are you talking about? The pregnant woman or the unborn child?

There is the problem in a nutshell. It's not clear which side you are on other than you are sure you are right. It's complex, it needs empathy, it needs sensitivity and delicate respectful appropriate discussion. No parties.

The termination or need for termination of a pregnancy, for whatever reason on the spectrum, is not a reason to be having a party. You can feel one way or another is the right thing in your own opinion, but it is sad and difficult. There is no parallel to marriage equality and the plane and train loads of voters flying in dressed up and singing songs on the journey, to which I was referring.

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 21:35

It couldn't be any clearer which side I am on, all you have to do is read.

The fundamental human right of bodily autonomy for women, obviously. Which has been long and hard fought for and we WILL be having a party when we win it.
This is far more important that marriage equality.

LuciaSpain · 01/05/2018 21:40

A party for a yes vote going through, sorry I find that distasteful.

I'm undecided. 100% because of the unrestricted 12 week abortion that may come with a yes majority.

LuluMarie · 01/05/2018 21:41

A party.

You have problems.

If you can read those accounts from the women of your country and vote no, then I despair.

agnurse · 01/05/2018 21:49

Actually, Ireland has a LOWER maternal mortality rate than the UK, where abortion is legal. The Savita case resulted from inadequately treated sepsis, NOT an inability to have an abortion. There are not "thousands" of women dying from an inability to have an abortion. In fact, Ireland ALREADY allows women to have an abortion if their life is at risk.

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 21:51

Nobody said there were thousands of women dying.

In fact, Ireland ALREADY allows women to have an abortion if their life is at risk

Not in practise, it does not. Why do you think Savita died?

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 21:53

Every day at least 12 women and girls from Ireland have an abortion. Nine travel abroad and at least 3 risk a jail term and complications to take illegally obtained abortion pills at home.
A no vote only allows this hypocrisy to continue.

LuciaSpain · 01/05/2018 21:53

I will be well informed when I vote.

I'm not listening to non independent information from either side.

My mistake, this thread is very much a yes side.

agnurse · 01/05/2018 21:55

Savita died because of untreated sepsis. An abortion would not have saved her life.

theymademejoin · 01/05/2018 21:56

Savita's sepsis would most likely have been successfully treated if they had terminated the pregnancy when she asked them to. She was told it could not happen while there was still a heartbeat. By the time the heart stopped, the sepsis had advanced enough to kill her.

agnurse · 01/05/2018 21:58

You don't need to have an abortion to treat sepsis adequately.

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 22:00

I'm not listening to non independent information from either side

Are real peoples stories non independent information? Is reality non independent information.

You vote as your conscience tells you. But when your children ask you how it possibly happened that women in Ireland were treated so appallingly in the 21st century, make sure you know what to tell them. Because other peoples religion and personal morals were more important than womens rights and womens lives.

LuciaSpain · 01/05/2018 22:02

Duogfargo I've reported your post in response to mine. How dare you try and project onto me your views on a no vote.

And I am leaning to a no vote and this is the last time I'll post about it, I don't appreciate any side pushing their views so hard.

You have my support, I have reported this post too and I agree with you completely, it's offensive and ridiculous.

Nice insult to same sex couples incidentally

There wasn't one, but keep up with the lies.

Yes Katie, I'm on the wrong thread, me and mylittle feeble argument.

Oh yes I'm voting no because of the mean girl, I'll show you.

Get a grip.

DougFargo · 01/05/2018 22:14

It's a repeal the 8th thread. Its in the title. You can't complain about it being one sided, there is no intent or need for it not to be one sided.

There is only one side, if you have any common decency or care for the women of your country.
