Repeal the 8th

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 10/04/2018 20:30

So DH and I are currently visiting my DF and DStepM in Southern Ireland (where I grew up).

Just answered the door to a couple who are looking for support in the referendum and wanted us to pledge that we would vote no.

No for context I am just 6 weeks away from giving birth to DC3 (so clearly very heavily pregnant) and they still had the audacity to argue with me when I said I didn't agree with them and I supported any woman's right to decide what happens to her body.

They started trying to show me pictures of 10 week old babies in the womb (not necessary obviously in the circumstances) and weren't pleased that I didn't agree with them given that I'm carrying a baby myself.

I'm sorry I don't really have an actual AIBU I just wanted to rant a bit and show support for the people who have to face this absolute shit every day until the referendum. We're going home to the UK on Thursday so I won't have it all thrown in my face anymore but I just think the guilt tripping is horrendous 😞

Oh that's not a real poster Grin would be a good one to do haha

LaurieMarlow · 20/04/2018 11:17

www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/irish-times-poll-public-favour-repeal-of-eighth-despite-slip-in-support-1.3467503#

Latest opinion polling is interesting. Intention to Repeal is still strong, but has slipped since January and don't know is high (and has risen).

Everything to play for.

Trinity66 · 20/04/2018 11:18

I just posted that Grin

LaurieMarlow · 20/04/2018 11:21

Laurie I can only assume you don't understand my very simple point, which in a nutshell is this: people doing churchy shit for non religious reasons is much better than them doing it for religious reasons.

How do the church even know what 'reasons' you're doing it for? Unless you put a sign on your child saying 'we don't believe in this bollocks, we're just doing it for the party' (which if you are, you have my full respect).

What the church see is bums on seats and people showing respect for the religious ceremony on the day. I think people need to think a lot harder about giving them that satisfaction - and the power that they can leverage with the participation numbers.

LaurieMarlow · 20/04/2018 11:23

I just posted that

Whoops, missed it Blush

I must admit, it has heartened me a bit. Though the high number of don't knows is still worrying.

Trinity66 · 20/04/2018 11:27

Whoops, missed it

No worries Grin

I must admit, it has heartened me a bit. Though the high number of don't knows is still worrying.

They did say though that the majority of undecideds are leaning more to Yes so fingers crossed

AngeloMysterioso · 20/04/2018 11:28

My only worry about these new polling stats being quoted is that similar stories were going around pre-Brexit referendum, and look how that turned out...

Yeah, I mean it's certainly not a given but they're usually pretty accurate I believe

EightdaysaweekIloveu · 21/04/2018 22:16

Heartened by the poll. Also heartened to see out Taoiseach back the yes vote, his
Motto 'Trust our women and doctors'

The huge posters on the no side are repulsive. They caused quite a stir in Cork city last weekend. Men shouting at women walking past that they were murderers. I do wonder about the no side, most aren't even from Ireland, makes my blood boil. But I think 'leave them off' they are not doing themselves any favours.

Thanks *whoesafraidofabigduckfart' I complained to our tidy towns as they have a ban on posters in our village about the graphic posters via email, no response but I don't care, just wanted to complain to someone Smile

peanut2017 · 22/04/2018 09:38

Was in the midlands yesterday 1.5 from Dublin visiting family and didn't see any repeal posters. All no posters in the towns and villages. That's a worry

Although I'm glad to see the polls but from what I heard the yes side has dropped and these people have moved to don't know. How do you educate and inform someone at this stage to come back to thinking do repealing?

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 23/04/2018 09:16

Up until now as I said earlier my Facebook feed had been very positive and completely for the Yes campaign. Was just scrolling through and saw a No post had been shared and I'm really shocked to say it was by a woman in her mid 20's. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but maybe I was naive in thinking it was only men and the older generation that would be the problem when it came to the repeal. I've unfriended her (weren't close thankfully, just a friend of a friend situation) but it's still made me wonder.

I was also shocked by the number of young women in the NO camp. When Mickey Harte had his GAA event at the weekend (which I am going to protest to GAA HQ about as I am so furious) there were two young camogie players there - women in their 20's. Now one was from NI - as is Mickey - and having family there I know they are way more conservative than us - but I was amazed to see the young Galway camogie player there. Perhaps its time for all the Yes GAA ladies football and camogie players to come out now, the association cannot be allowed to get away with Mickey Harte hijacking their name for this - he doesn't even have a bloody vote in this!

www.irishtimes.com/opinion/anti-abortion-posters-fail-to-take-account-of-life-1.3470187

This is the best opinion piece I've read on the topic by a country mile.

And he's absolutely right, it's far too complicated to be put on a poster.

PinkbicyclesinBerlin · 23/04/2018 16:49

I agree and Diarmaid Ferriter wrote a similarly good one about the history of women’s treatment in Ireland.

Annasgirl · 23/04/2018 17:51

Yes they were both excellent. Malachy Clerkin also had a good article in the IT this morning saying the GAA really want this to go away and that they are fuming with MH.

peanut2017 · 23/04/2018 21:33

@LaurieMarlow read that too. Really great piece and hope it gets shared and read

Great article by Fintan O'Toole this morning in the IT.

Not sure how to link. But it's free content.

Trinity66 · 24/04/2018 11:53

I rang my local county council this morning to check that they'd received my daughters forms to register and the woman I spoke to said that they had a massive back log of applications to get on the amended register but they would all be put on in time. So loads of people are trying to register, you'd imagine that's a lot of younger people so fingers crossed this is a good sign

peanut2017 · 24/04/2018 22:34

Saw some Together for Yes posters yesterday but they just say 'vote yes'. I know the space is limited but think there could be something better than this

If I was an undecided that wouldn't persuade me to vote yes

SelkieUnderLand · 24/04/2018 23:41

My boss today said that women should have the father's permission to get an abortion. Felt v depressed. Said too much. Boss clever, has a masters. How can she have so little empathy?

PinkbicyclesinBerlin · 24/04/2018 23:59

Selkie so long as she votes yes, for the minute I’d take that a million times over no abortion, never ever.

theymademejoin · 25/04/2018 23:26

I was watching a YouTube sketch earlier and a retain ad came up beforehand. They're everywhere in social media. I'm not seeing any repeal ads.

An excellent article in Waterford whispers - waterfordwhispersnews.com/2018/04/24/group-that-sold-babies-critical-of-peoples-decision-to-vote-yes/

Annasgirl · 26/04/2018 12:25

Oh that article was great.

So many Vote No posters - I was driving across the city with DS yesterday and I reckon it was 10:1 NO versus Yes posters. Where are they getting the money?
Also, did any of you see the "if you do not support the killing of a 6 month old baby vote No" with a pic of a 6 month old foetus? I can't abide the lies. And it is all lies.
