Repeal the 8th

So DH and I are currently visiting my DF and DStepM in Southern Ireland (where I grew up).

Just answered the door to a couple who are looking for support in the referendum and wanted us to pledge that we would vote no.

No for context I am just 6 weeks away from giving birth to DC3 (so clearly very heavily pregnant) and they still had the audacity to argue with me when I said I didn't agree with them and I supported any woman's right to decide what happens to her body.

They started trying to show me pictures of 10 week old babies in the womb (not necessary obviously in the circumstances) and weren't pleased that I didn't agree with them given that I'm carrying a baby myself.

I'm sorry I don't really have an actual AIBU I just wanted to rant a bit and show support for the people who have to face this absolute shit every day until the referendum. We're going home to the UK on Thursday so I won't have it all thrown in my face anymore but I just think the guilt tripping is horrendous 😞

I think it's years of conditioning, even for people who are not religious. Also, abortion is very much hidden so it's self-perpetuating in a way.
Because it's banned, people don't talk about it and most people are not aware of anyone they know who has had one.

BertrandRussell · 12/04/2018 10:32

And abortion is complicated and messy and doesn’t have the right on party credentials equal marriage does. Also it’s all about women.

squoosh · 12/04/2018 10:33

There’s no way 40% of Catholics attend weekly mass. The Catholic church would be in raptures if they were still doing that well.

bluebellation · 12/04/2018 10:41

I'm British living in Ireland so can't vote, but I've just donated to Together for Yes. DH will be voting Yes, but he's furious that men get to vote at all. My DD was staying with us from the UK last week and was outraged at the No posters. Fingers crossed for a good result.

squoosh · 12/04/2018 10:42

I tell you what, I will give you this year's salary (nearly £150,000) if I can video you walking around Derry for an afternoon telling everyone that Derry is part of the UK.

People from NI are of course fully entitled to consider themselves Irish but it still doesn’t change the fact that they grew up/are growing up in a different cultural environment to the Republic of Ireland. That’s just a simple fact. And a £150,000 wager doesn’t change that.

OhCalamity · 12/04/2018 10:50

Please, mumsnetters, share the link for funding the Repeal side far and wide as you can. If you are an Irish citizen, or living in Ireland, or if you know an Irish person you would like to give an unspecified cash gift to you can donate.

crowdfund.togetherforyes.ie/

I should clarify what I wrote above. If there is ambiguity on whether or not a donor may not be an Irish citizen, or an Irish resident, your donation is likely to be returned. They are being very careful to ensure that only legitimate donors can contribute unlike the Save crowd.

So, for example, a donation made by an Irish bank card =fine. Paypal as it's international might require further checking, and if so, you might be asked to confirm your citizenship or proof of Irish address in an email down the line. If you can't provide this, your donation would be returned.

antiAlias · 12/04/2018 10:50

"And a £150,000 wager doesn’t change that."

So, will you do it?

This isn't as much a wager as a job. I'll pay you £25,000 an hour for a 6 hour day to march a given route explaining why the people you meet are British. I won't pay if you're arrested or killed. I really, really will and will pay for this to be made into a proper contract. I retain copyright of the video of you, though.

So, will you do it or are you losing your confidence?

Losing my confidence? Please point out the post where I said I'd be confident about marching around Derry shouting ‘Oi, you over there, you’re British’? I clearly stated that NI people are fully entitled to consider themselves Irish.

But seriously, I’m getting embarrassed for you now. I’m sorry your feelings are so hurt by facts but you really need to address your anger issues.

ffs is this a real conversation?

squoosh · 12/04/2018 10:58

The fact being that someone who grew up in Derry in the 1960s and left the island long since may not be the most reliable authority on modern Ireland.

Donated and shared on FB Flowers

crunchtime · 12/04/2018 11:26

Is there any way us Brits can donate to the say yes appeal?

BlueSapp · 12/04/2018 11:37

they grew up/are growing up in a different cultural environment to the Republic of Ireland.

Oh please, that’s insulting Irish people living in this island no matter which part of that island are all in the same culture, someone living in the north of ireland isn’t just playing at being Irish it’s our identity just as it is if you live in a town a couple of miles away which is in a different county

TheVeryThing · 12/04/2018 11:39

Donations must come from residents of ROI. There are lots of gofundme pages for Irish people trying to get home to vote so maybe that's one way you can help.

squoosh · 12/04/2018 11:48

No it’s not.

As I’ve said (more than once) people from NI are of course are fully entitled to consider themselves Irish from their toes to their fingertips. But that does not change the fact that as it stands NI is part of the UK and Ireland is not. Are people seriously claiming that growing up Irish in Belfast is the same experience as growing up Irish in a city in the Republic?

Your experience of being Irish is very different to mine.

squoosh · 12/04/2018 11:48

But I think there's been enough derailing on this particular issue.

BlueSapp · 12/04/2018 11:56

It’s not about city’s because growing up in cork I’m sure would be different to growing up in Dublin etc... but rural Ireland is mostly the same all over this island and a line on a map wouldn’t change that, the GAA, the church, it doesn’t really differ.

I know this referendum won’t really change anything in the north but hopefully the momentum will send ripples for change here too, we are Irish and would just appreciate people actually remembering that.

squoosh · 12/04/2018 12:02

It’s not about city’s because growing up in cork I’m sure would be different to growing up in Dublin etc

And growing up under the Tories would be different to growing up under Fine Gael, and so on…

Happy to accept any NI person as Irish if that’s how they identify.

heateallthebuns · 12/04/2018 12:09

The no posters so far are much better with photos, less wordy, catchier and more imotive slogans, more of them etc. I think the yes campaign is on the back foot. I am worried they aren't capturing a positive vibe like the gay marriage campaign did.

inniu · 12/04/2018 12:18

People who are neither Irish citizens nor Irish residents cannot donate but they can support the campaign by purchasing Repeal merchandise. There are books, badges etc

BlueSapp · 12/04/2018 12:22

And growing up under the Tories would be different to growing up under Fine Gael, Surprisingly not so much, except it was Labour tbf

WillowWept · 12/04/2018 12:23

The poster that has had me raging is the one that says:

"1/5 babies in England are aborted. Don't bring that to ireland"

Fucking hypocrites! It's already an Irish issue just one that is contracted out to the UK to deal with whilst ignoring the extent to which doing so exacerbates the pain and suffering of women.

I can almost tolerate the religious pro life who don't want abortion to exist at all (and I say that as pro choice to the extent i believe in abortion at any point) but the ones who just want to push the problem elsewhere. Absolute fuckers!!

squoosh · 12/04/2018 12:23

heateallthebuns, yeah that was always going to be the drawback for the campaign. An easier task to create a feel-good campaign based around love and marriage and hipster couples tying the knot.

Trinity66 · 12/04/2018 12:29

*The poster that has had me raging is the one that says:

Have you seen the picture floating around of that one on a Poll just above the sign for Dublin Port? That was pretty funny Grin I saw this one this morning and it made me really mad

Repeal the 8th
heateallthebuns · 12/04/2018 12:32

Yeah I agree - who doesn't love panti bliss charming everyone etc. what could repeal do to make the campaign more attractive?

Also I find the England posters a bit xenophobic tbh.
