Repeal the 8th

So DH and I are currently visiting my DF and DStepM in Southern Ireland (where I grew up).

Just answered the door to a couple who are looking for support in the referendum and wanted us to pledge that we would vote no.

No for context I am just 6 weeks away from giving birth to DC3 (so clearly very heavily pregnant) and they still had the audacity to argue with me when I said I didn't agree with them and I supported any woman's right to decide what happens to her body.

They started trying to show me pictures of 10 week old babies in the womb (not necessary obviously in the circumstances) and weren't pleased that I didn't agree with them given that I'm carrying a baby myself.

I'm sorry I don't really have an actual AIBU I just wanted to rant a bit and show support for the people who have to face this absolute shit every day until the referendum. We're going home to the UK on Thursday so I won't have it all thrown in my face anymore but I just think the guilt tripping is horrendous 😞

That England statistic isn't actually true anyway is it?

BlueSapp · 12/04/2018 12:35

I get that people are entitled to believe what they want but i dont understand how they don't see that hiding from abortion doesn't make it go away, Its not about morals its about substandard healthcare being delivered in Ireland.

Slievenamon · 12/04/2018 13:08

I tell you what, I will give you this year's salary (nearly £150,000) if I can video you walking around Derry for an afternoon telling everyone that Derry is part of the UK

Why would we? They already know they are in the UK! They don't need anyone to tell them Hmm

AloaBoa · 12/04/2018 13:56

I really hope it gets through and we can get some laws that allow pregnant women normal medical treatment.

I had to get pills over the Internet because I couldn't afford to travel. The only friends I could tell were on holiday when they came and I didn't want to wait until they were back to take them as it would be later than advised. I had to do it alone and I had no idea what to expect because the 'prolife' movement has flooded the Internet with scare stories about haemorrhages etc. The not knowing and being alone was terrifying.

Women on the Web are amazing, they send pills out from a doctor for a €90 donation (it varies country to country), less if you can't afford that, nothing if you're desperate and can't afford anything.

Anyone who wants to help the most vulnerable pregnant women in countries where they've no access to abortion services should donate to them.

OhCalamity · 12/04/2018 14:20

Donations must come from residents of ROI.

Not quite - if you are an Irish citizen that is resident overseas you can also donate.

And like you mention - other ways to donate would be purchasing Repeal merchandise, supporting crowd-funding fares for Irish people coming home to vote. Or you could donate to Women on the Web - Irish women are increasingly opting for importing pills purchased online.

StripySocksAndDocs · 12/04/2018 14:21

The England stat might be true. But there doesnt seem to be a source given.

Though I do known it's highly unlikely there's stats for England alone (it's always England and Wales). So the poster is a xenophobia bias regardless of it's statitical correctness.

heateallthebuns · 12/04/2018 14:42

How could the repeal campaign be improved and made more positive?

Elendon · 12/04/2018 15:02

I suppose you could start with the positive by stressing that this is about choice for Irish women, and repeal of the 8th will bring Irish women into line with most EU countries.

Also that wonderful phrase up thread.

If you don't want one, don't get one.

Though this could be turned around to:

If you want one, then you have the choice.

Or both.

I've bought some merchandise.

Elendon · 12/04/2018 15:04

Trinity66

It's reminiscent of the 'Turkey's voting for Christmas' phrase during the divorce referendum.

Juells · 12/04/2018 15:26

I caught a glimpse of a poster this morning as I drove to Waterford, my eyes bugged in shock but I was past it before I could double-check. From the glimpse I saw, it looked like it said "At nine weeks I'm yawning and kicking".

Where is the No campaign getting all its money?

heateallthebuns · 12/04/2018 15:30

The church?

squoosh · 12/04/2018 15:33

American anti abortion 'charities' have a lot of cash to throw at this.

theymademejoin · 12/04/2018 15:33

@Juells - Where is the No campaign getting all its money?

A lot of it is coming from american fundamentalists.

crunchtime · 12/04/2018 16:08

so how come they are allowed to take money from americans but we can't donate to yes?

Eenymeeny123 · 12/04/2018 16:27

Well I went into town today and I saw several posters about voting no and not one about repealing. I thought the government were for repealing so why don't they have posters anywhere?

StripySocksAndDocs · 12/04/2018 16:47

In Dublin?

Eenymeeny123 · 12/04/2018 18:21

Sorry stripysocks, in Cork city. I made a point of checking after reading this thread. I was on the bus and there was at least 5 posters for the no side as Well as 2 billboards. I didn't see 1 repeal poster.

StripySocksAndDocs · 12/04/2018 19:18

Ah right. I was wondering as I was in Dublin city centre and there seems to be more Yes than No posters. At the moment.

Juells · 12/04/2018 19:23

I haven't seen a single Yes poster. Just saw two people coming down the street, an older woman (seventies) and what looked like a teenage boy. Girded my loins, then had the wind taken out of my sails as they were campaigning for Yes. 😄

heateallthebuns · 12/04/2018 19:23

I drove out on swords road from Dublin tonight, way more no posters than yes.

heateallthebuns · 12/04/2018 19:24

Where are you stripeysocks? Waves Wink

Juells · 12/04/2018 19:27

I'm in Dublin too. Dun Laoghaire area.

LaurieMarlow · 12/04/2018 19:27

I've seen 1 yes poster to about 15 no posters so far (South Central Dublin). On the up side, any campaigning I've seen has been for yes.

deadringer · 12/04/2018 19:31

I am in dun laoghaire too - waves at juells-

Endofsummer · 12/04/2018 19:35

There were huge banners, twice as high as a person, covered in images of foetuses in the Irish city near me. With a big rally and American speakers. They are a huge presence. I’ve seen nothing from the yes campaign at all.
