To want a shopping trolley at 27

theforeignwoman · 10/04/2018 11:36

I'm 27, pregnant and have an old knee injury. The fact that we don't have a car means I have to walk to and from (10 mins each way) the shops a couple of times during the week. Carrying a rucksack and bags is killing me so I have considered in investing in one of these:

www.amazon.co.uk/Sholley-Shopping-Trolley-Tartan-centimetres/dp/B018CWIUJA?tag=mumsnetforum-21

DP says I will look ridiculous and get strange looks. He also says they're only for elderly ladies. AIBU to want to get one?

I've got one. I'm 29 and I have a chronic bad back. I can't carry heavy things so this is perfect.

Mind is black with purple butterflies on it

How much do you care what people think?

If you want one, then get one. However, if all the time you’re using it you’re worrying about perceived judging then it might glens up more stressful...

Fabpinky · 10/04/2018 11:38

I had one when I was 18 and first left home and didn't drive. It was zebra print

MoistCantaloupe · 10/04/2018 11:38

Yeah just get one!

Who cares if you get strange looks, I'm not sure you will to be honest. I don't think I'd care very much if I saw a younger person with one; I'd just assume they needed it for practical reasons.

You could pimp it up. Get a bell, tinsel, a giant picture of DP to stick on the front.

MySockIsWetAgain · 10/04/2018 11:38

Get an annual pass for ASDA delivery!!

DryHeave · 10/04/2018 11:39

Just use the pram already Grin

PrettyLittIeThing · 10/04/2018 11:39

I wouldn't be seen dead with one at my age (29) sorry. Even my mum wouldn't and she's in her 60s. She uses a suitcase instead.

Left · 10/04/2018 11:40

I had one in my late 20s when I had no car. It was okay, no one stared.

Soubriquet · 10/04/2018 11:40

Mines not a forward pushing 4 wheeled one though

Mine is a pull behind you one with two wheels

BarbaraofSevillle · 10/04/2018 11:40

YANBU, they're very practical, especially in the circumstances you describe. Are also a good thing where people live quite close to the shops, but too far to walk easily with shopping, saves short car journeys and congestion.

We used the one that came with the apartment on holiday. We didn't have a hire car and the shop was 10 minutes walk away - great for bringing back all the drinks we bought without a struggle.

If you want one that looks a bit less 'old lady' how about this?

Some of those people looking will be people thinking they need to get one for themselves Smile.

moita · 10/04/2018 11:41

Oh just get one - back pain is so not worth it.

moita · 10/04/2018 11:41

or knee pain Blush

Nanasueathome · 10/04/2018 11:41

I want a wicker one

ShowOfHands · 10/04/2018 11:43

I used them all the time when I didn't drive and still do on holiday. I have three, one spotty, one striped and a wicker basket one.

HugMeBringItIn · 10/04/2018 11:49

The pushy tartan one is very old lady esque. My gran had one like that. The dog pull a long one is cool.
I use a backpack to put milk in if I walk to the shops and then a bag for life on one shoulder and remaining bags in my hands.

MrsTommyBanks · 10/04/2018 11:50

I've just got one of these from Amazon after seeing it on a similar thread here a couple if weeks ago. It's brilliant

I have this one and I love it.

There are loads of great designs. Come and join the Trolleyists! I was't much older than you when I got my first one. I initially wondered what people would think, but decided my approach would be to imagine others thinking 'Chuffin' 'eck, these bags are heavy. I've got a sweat on and the handles are really hurting. I wish I was brave enough to get a trolley.'

I noticed pretty quickly that there were other young Trolleyists at the shops and we often give each other a smile of recognition for being cool enough not to care, daymmit!

Full disclosure: Even if I live to be 90 I will never be old enough for a tartan trolley

HugMeBringItIn · 10/04/2018 11:52

That’s awesome. It’s like a pushchair/shopping trolley hybrid.
If I had one of those I’d randomly call in to it ‘are you ok in there Tarquin? Can you breathe?’

Aethelthryth · 10/04/2018 11:54

I mentioned mine to my French teacher and she said, with a perfectly straight face: "tres Parisienne".

Indispensable

FloydOnThePull · 10/04/2018 11:54

@Fabpinky mine's zebra print too!

I got mine when I was about 25 and it's brilliant. You can do way better than the fusty monstrosity you've linked to in your OP though Wink

safariboot · 10/04/2018 11:57

YANBU. My DM was using one in her 30s and 40s.

But try and avoid the tartan.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 10/04/2018 12:02

I had one when I was at Uni. Fabulous thing.

AnnieOH1 · 10/04/2018 12:05

I got my first one 5 years ago at 28 with NY photos plastered all over it. Couldn't manage pushchair and bags/rucksack. It was a revelation and I see plenty of others around who aren't little old ladies.

Tomarto · 10/04/2018 12:14

Tesco do a delivery saver pass, if you use clubcard vouchers to buy it it works out half price so I paid £21 for a £42 6 month pass and can get shopping delivered any time. Can DP not nip to the shops as you are pregnant and have an injured knee? I've never had a trolley but used to drop my DS at nursery then pop to the shop and load the buggy with bits to push home. I honestly wouldn't think anything if I saw someone younger pushing a trolley I'd just assume they needed it and mind my own business.
