To want a shopping trolley at 27

theforeignwoman · 10/04/2018 11:36

I'm 27, pregnant and have an old knee injury. The fact that we don't have a car means I have to walk to and from (10 mins each way) the shops a couple of times during the week. Carrying a rucksack and bags is killing me so I have considered in investing in one of these:

www.amazon.co.uk/Sholley-Shopping-Trolley-Tartan-centimetres/dp/B018CWIUJA?tag=mumsnetforum-21

DP says I will look ridiculous and get strange looks. He also says they're only for elderly ladies. AIBU to want to get one?

If a four-wheeled trolley will help you to feel less pain and manage your shopping more easily, then I suspect that will outweigh the potential embarrassment of being stared at. I like the look of the folding one, I might get one.
I had something similar in my early 20s because it was the only practical way for me to manage. I bloody loved it!

Youcanttasteracism · 10/04/2018 14:00

Fucking designs omfg

jensner · 10/04/2018 14:05

Agree with PPs, avoid tartan and get a funky one and you'll be fine.

I bought a Playmarket one as posted above after we got rid of the buggy because I have mobility issues and it really helps me feel more stable. We use it on days out as well!

DinkyDaisy · 10/04/2018 14:05

I am much older than you but not an old lady!
I love my two wheel Argos wheelie bag...

Omgwtfbbq · 10/04/2018 14:12

I was 23 when I got mine and I loved it for getting into town with baby in a sling to get groceries. Can carry so much more than in a pram!

Springtrolls · 10/04/2018 14:18

Fucking hell £125 Shock
Think mine cost about a tenner. Had it for years before it gave in.

Is this design ridiculous then for someone my age? I like the two wheelers (especially the pug design, ha), but I fear having to drag the trolley behind me is going to be hard work on my knee, too.

Nonsense. I adore mine and get loads of compliments about it. Who cares what other people think anyway? Go for it!

Walkingthedog46 · 10/04/2018 14:26

I had one in my 30s. Friends said they wouldn't be seen dead with one. I used to overtake them bombing along with my trolley while they staggered along, shopping bags practically dragging along the ground. what's the difference between pushing a trolley round the store

liminality · 10/04/2018 14:30

Trolleys are THE BEST. Don't even think about it, get one immediately. Here at the markets all sorts of ages use them, boys too!

MissDuke · 10/04/2018 14:39

I am very tempted to get the ebay flamingo one for when we bring picnics out on a long walk. Anyone know if its sturdy for big bottles of water etc?

CallThePenguins · 10/04/2018 14:39

@jensner I have a Babboe Big trike which is excellent if you have mobility issues, it takes 4 kids 100kg, and the seats fold up so you can put tons of shopping in there. Also electric assist versions. Not cheap, but if you don't drive and have kids and shopping to lug around it's bloody brilliant.

Midlandertoofarfromthesea · 10/04/2018 14:53

Must say I’m tempted too. I’m gutted that ds2 doesn’t now need his pushchair. I keep buying more in town than I can carry. I say go for it! 😁

Badbadtromance · 10/04/2018 14:56

I've got one and i drive everywhere

StableGenius · 10/04/2018 14:57

My shopping trolley was a life changer! I don't drive and live a 15 min uphill walk from the supermarket - no more arriving home with deep red indents in my palms, no more having to take 15 old carrier bags out with me on a shopping spree. Do it - you won't regret it.

(And it makes a great flight bag on holiday too.)

I love this one. Bit chintsy ... but tgats me. Theres a nice polka dot one too.

flowerslemonade · 10/04/2018 15:02

i think you should get one but dont get that tartan beast

my friend has got one... the only embarrassing moment was when a group of us went for a curry and the waiter asked us where we wanted him to store her bag lol. it was blocking the restaurant aisle.

llangennith · 10/04/2018 15:03

I live near Cardiff IKEA and most people I know of all ages have an IKEA wheely bag. They’re great!

0lgaDaPolga · 10/04/2018 15:05

Go for it. I got one aged 25 when I lived in London and didn’t have a car. The big supermarket was a 20 min walk and it was hard to carry my shopping so a trolley was great. I never got any looks to my knowledge and have seen plenty of young people with them

elQuintoConyo · 10/04/2018 15:11

DP says I will look ridiculous and get strange looks. He also says they're only for elderly ladies.

So then he does the shopping.

I had one when i was 23, couldn't give a stuff what people thought of it. 43yo now and on my 3rd- they last bloody ages!

When you buy it, make a sign that says "i'm with stupid--> " to hang on it Grin

Yoksha · 10/04/2018 15:12

Go for it. But not the tartan one. I blame a lot of the posture problems and pain in my mum's generation on the lugging shopping bags around. I've done it too, and find it soul destroying.

jensner · 10/04/2018 15:25

@CallThePenguins I'd be tempted to get one for DH to cycle with me sitting in it! Smile

Unfortunately my cycling days are over.

jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 10/04/2018 15:27

I have this one, named it Biddy Blush

www.lakeland.co.uk/25914/Easy-Load-City-Shopper-Folding-Shopping-Trolley-36L-Black

When up in London at Dh's flat I don't use my car so this is a godsend, its really light too which is handy for hauling up three flights of stairs to the flat.

My Dh thinks I'm bonkers for having one but then he doesn't do the food shop, I prefer to walk but even buying a few bits its the overall weight of the bags that was killing me. This allows me to haul and drink my free coffeeGrin

SciFiFan2015 · 10/04/2018 15:28

One like this would be good because of the stair climbing wheels.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00F611YTO/ref=mpssa1111?ie=UTF8&qid=1523370253&sr=8-11&pi=ACSX2366SY340QL65&keywords=shopping+trolley+on+wheels

You should practice and see if pull behind or push in front suits you better. I had awful SPD during pregnancy and wasn't able (on advice of physio) to push a shopping trolley or a buggy/pram (you put too much twist on joints when pushing) pulling was ok though.
