Anti Brexit - who in the hell do I vote for?

I’m always voted and take it seriously as a civic duty but, for the first time ever, aibu not to bother at the locals this May?

Tories seem intent on a ruinous Brexit that will leave us downing in cheap inports of chlorinated chicken, Labour doing nothing to stop them as they seem to think Brexit is a change to build a socialist paradise. Lib Dems are an irrelevance now as even fewer people vote for them.

Surely I can’t be the only person to feel like this? Where is the stop Brexit party and why is no one demanding one?

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

I'm voting on local issues and people but will certainly be making my views known to canvassers.

Pinkvoid · 09/04/2018 05:43

The problem is, unless we held another referendum and the outcome was different, Brexit has to happen. I appreciate referendums are merely an opinion poll but if the government hadn’t gone ahead with the (small) majority’s wishes, there would have been absolute outrage. I don’t support or even like the Tories by any stretch of the imagination but their hands were tied when it came to Brexit (they shouldn’t have held the referendum in the first place though but that’s a whoooooole other debate!) There’s really nothing else they could do and the wheels are already in motion now. We will be leaving whether we like it or not.

Having said that, I also do not know who to vote for next month. I would ask my DP to shoot me between the eyes before I considered tories and up until now, I have always voted Lib Dem (until after 2010...) or labour. I like Corbyn but the party is in absolute shambles and I just can’t deny that anymore. It’s sad and I am also considering not bothering for the first time ever.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 09/04/2018 05:57

I'm going to vote lib dem or green . It's a local election but I can't vote Tory, particularly as my mp is an idiot and labour is a mess. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to forgive the Tories for brexit or austerity.

Efferlunt · 09/04/2018 06:03

I think austerity caused Brexit so The tories are doubly responsible for this mess and I could never vote for them as they clearly put their own interests before the country’s.

I do get that’s it’s the ‘will of the people on one level and parties hands are tied. Just wondering why there had been no backlash from the 48% because nothing good can come of it.

Lib Dem’s are the anti Brexit party

Believeitornot · 09/04/2018 06:19

Yabu

Many didn’t think the Brexit vote would win so they didn’t vote. A harsh lesson.

Vote. At least read up on the Lib Demss and all other options.

Anyway, these are local elections. So your views on Brexit are secondary really.

Pluckedpencil · 09/04/2018 06:27

Go learn about local politics and vote for someone who works tirelessly for you at a local level.

coconuttella · 09/04/2018 06:27

I’m not a Lib Dem supporter but it does annoy me when people who won’t vote for them because “even fewer people vote for them” even though their policies align with their thinking!

In reality your single vote won’t make a difference anyway so if you are exercising your right and duty to vote, you vote should be cast for the party and person you most believe in.

coconuttella · 09/04/2018 06:30

Also, these are local elections... your councillors have nothing to do with the implementation of Brexit! Your vote should be for the councillor and party you believe best placed to deliver on local issues.

coconuttella · 09/04/2018 06:34

Just wondering why there had been no backlash from the 48% because nothing good can come of it.

Because most of the 48% aren’t the ardent remainers you see on MN. Many didn’t like the EU but voted out of fear of catastrophe if we left... fears that appear to have been grossly overplayed so far.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 09/04/2018 06:36

Where I live our education funding is caused by an historic Tory council aiming to be the best Tory council and enact the most cuts. So there is a link between national and local policies.
That being said I also know a good city council that is Tory.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 09/04/2018 06:36

Catastrophe seems very much on the cards to me and most people I know in real life. Not just on Mumsnet.

Believeitornot · 09/04/2018 06:41

Just wondering why there had been no backlash from the 48% because nothing good can come of it

^yes there has!

And as for fears that appear to have been grossly overplayed so far

Well.... we haven’t left yet Hmm even so, things aren’t great.

coconuttella · 09/04/2018 06:59

Catastrophe seems very much on the cards to me and most people I know in real life. Not just on Mumsnet.

Where is your echo-chamber exactly?... Seriously, I know a wide variety of people, most of them remainers like me, and none seem to be overly concerned, let alone anxious about an impending catastrophe!

ADarkandStormyKnight · 09/04/2018 07:15

Maybe you also have an echo chamber as you put it.

I read/listen to the news, listen to debates and programmes such as BBC Question Time and follow a variety of people on social media including people I don't agree with. I also talk to people in different social and work circles. I have met very few people who are enthusiastic for Brexit.

Bekabeech · 09/04/2018 07:29

Lib Dem or Green!
Don't ignore either of these, the May elections are local so both these parties win seats, which is most likely depends where you are. They are the only non-Brexit parties in England.

InfiniteSheldon · 09/04/2018 07:35

Please don't vote Green: Brighton & Hove is still reeling from the disastrous Green council, rubbish rotting on the streets, one of the worst record for recycling.....

coconuttella · 09/04/2018 07:38

I have met very few people who are enthusiastic for Brexit.

Neither have I....though I do know some. Basically it doesn’t feature on most people’s worry lists in the way it seems to top many people’s here, or at least it very rarely now comes up in conversation as being something people are taking an active interest in, and this is through the various intersecting circles of my life.

flowersWB · 09/04/2018 07:43

These elections are for local councillors. You should be reading and researching your own local issues and voting for the person who's views best match your own. Try not to bring in the national issues as they aren't relevant at this time.
That said I could never ever put a cross next to a conservative candidate.

thecatsthecats · 09/04/2018 07:48

@coconutella - I do vote Lib Dem, so as you can imagine, it annoys me even more! It's a ridiculous and uneducated attitude when parties change so much.

I don't always vote for them - depends on the candidates locally, policies etc. I've voted labour, green and independent too. It is in the interests of the voting public to have a healthy and varied opposition. There's too much scope amongst 70 million people to be represented by two parties, which are themselves internally riven.

Take a policy quiz OP, and see what it gives you.

Oh and if people can bring themselves to support the Labour party after they led a policy leading to THOUSANDS of deaths in the Middle East under a different leadership, then they can forgive the Lib Dems for tuition fees - something also under a different leadership in a government where they weren't even in majority Hmm

(Not saying you have to support Lib Dems, but quite frankly, most comments I see dismissing them are wholly uninformed and unoriginal, making you question the critical faculties of the speaker concerned)

Grandmaswagsbag · 09/04/2018 07:49

I feel the same. No idea who to vote for. Trapped on a trian that I desperately want to get off, no apparent way of changing anything. Brexit Wise the only hope I have right now is that mps will vote the final deal out when it comes to it because I strongly suspect we won’t have much of a deal. But what then? I’ll probably go labour though as I can’t stand the cuts and feel it’s leading to a totally broken society. Libraries closed/1000 children’s centres closed/shit infrastructure and it’s all local governments fault of course because there is no longer any accountability for CG!!

Brokenbiscuit · 09/04/2018 08:00

Seriously, I know a wide variety of people, most of them remainers like me, and none seem to be overly concerned, let alone anxious about an impending catastrophe!

If you knew me, you probably wouldn't know that I am exceedingly anxious about the impending catastrophe that is Brexit. My own job almost certainly won't survive, but to be honest, I think that's just the tip of the iceberg. However, in RL, I only talk about my concerns with close friends and family, as I don't know how others voted and it's just too divisive. I cannot forgive those who voted for this mess.

I do think Brexit is going to be a disaster for our country, and I am quietly making preparations in case we need to up sticks and go elsewhere. However, I feel no need to broadcast this to the people around me.

PossumBottom · 09/04/2018 08:00

Lib dems are winning local council by elections all over the place. If people like you actually voted for them we might see change. And an end to the ridiculous two party system. Vote for the future you want to see. Get politically active and stop moaning.

(From a lib dem and local council candidate with two small kids and a lot of other stuff on my plate, too)

Believeitornot · 09/04/2018 08:18

Where is your echo-chamber exactly?... Seriously, I know a wide variety of people, most of them remainers like me, and none seem to be overly concerned, let alone anxious about an impending catastrophe!

How many people do you know... a drop in the ocean I suspect.

Better to read and listen widely, beyond your social circle and beyond twitter which is a mass of fake news, echo chambers etc.

I voted remain but tried hard to find a strong economic case for leave. There was not one.

Helmetbymidnight · 09/04/2018 08:44

I will vote lib dem. They don't impress me, but they don't outright appall me so that's good.
