Anti Brexit - who in the hell do I vote for?

Efferlunt · 09/04/2018 05:26

I’m always voted and take it seriously as a civic duty but, for the first time ever, aibu not to bother at the locals this May?

Tories seem intent on a ruinous Brexit that will leave us downing in cheap inports of chlorinated chicken, Labour doing nothing to stop them as they seem to think Brexit is a change to build a socialist paradise. Lib Dems are an irrelevance now as even fewer people vote for them.

Surely I can’t be the only person to feel like this? Where is the stop Brexit party and why is no one demanding one?

i agree wholeheartedly that Tories have made a right mess- and Labour is supporting them, but Lib Dem is not an irrelevance- not in my view - I am French, my son's father British and the refusal for both tories and Labour to vote to guarantee my right to remain has been very stressful for both myself and my son ( who lives in my own house), having another dreadful pressure to live with at a time when he should be able to concentrate on exams. Lib Dem spoke up for the rights of people like myself, EU citizens who have been living in limbo for 2 years- us and our children. I shall be supporting Lib Dems whoheartedly. the Greens have also been showing compassion, and family friendly attitude.

dedel · 09/04/2018 15:36

i disagree. Voting against pro brexit parties will send a strong message to politicians.

squoosh · 09/04/2018 15:40

In my opinion, not voting would be insulting to all of the women who sacrificed so much to get us the right to vote

Insulting not to give your vote any thought. Different thing entirely to come to the conclusion that none of the candidates represent your views.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/04/2018 15:44

I feel that voting on Brexit will hijack the election.

There so much that’s important on local level, I’d hate to see all local issues sacrificed on the altar of protest vote.

squoosh · 09/04/2018 15:46

Brexit is my sole concern when it comes to deciding who to vote for.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/04/2018 15:50

No libraries, parks, green spaces, planning, parking, care homes?

Waste? Social care? Safeguarding?

Artesia · 09/04/2018 15:52

Feeling lost and politically homeless too. Would have considered Libdem, but can’t vote for a party which is so fully in support of self-id, and dismissive of women and women’s issues

squoosh · 09/04/2018 15:55

And what exactly do you think will happen to these things if the Tory hard Brexit goes through? Corbyn talks a good game about making society safer for the poorer but it's blatantly clear that Brexit will only make everything a whole lot worse for them.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/04/2018 16:01

Nothing good is going to happen to all these with Brexit.

But it will be even worse with incompetent councillors voted in because they wear the right colour rosette.

A protest vote gave us Brexit. another won’t fix it.

We need to look at the current performance and and the candidates and decide on merit.

Everything else is a losing game.

Nannee · 09/04/2018 16:02

I think it does make a difference. It tells Westminster what people are really thinking.
Even if you don't want to change your vote at a General Election, you can show your party leader how you feel.

Given that Theresa May (under pressure from a small pocket of backbenchers and a weak cabinet) and Jeremy Corbyn (against the majority of his own party) are both barrelling towards a Brexit that not even most Leave voters anticipated or wanted, you have one chance to show them you aren't on board.

Camdenlife33 · 09/04/2018 16:03

The thing is that brexit most likely won’t be reversed at this stage, no matter how much you hope or how many articles you see about what a mistake it is. That’s why there isn’t a ‘stop brexit’ party. Although technically it could be stopped, it’s too far gone.

I personally voted remain, and would again, but I have come to terms that we’re leaving the EU at this point.

Bramble71 · 09/04/2018 16:05

I absolutely agree with you, OP. There is no real opposition to Brexit and I only wish there were. I intend to vote Green for the foreseeable future.

gussyfinknottle · 09/04/2018 16:14

I'd vote green but I'm concerned they have been seduced by the whole militant trans agenda.
To be honest, they are looking like the least worst option but I haven't made my mind up.
I may still just spoil my local election ballot paper . Tories ? Hell would need to freeze over. Labour? Not with that numpty and his minions in charge. Just Green candidate left.
We can't stop Brexit. It's too late.

BackforGood · 09/04/2018 16:55

True.
that said, I'd still rather vote for a "best fit" than allow someone with really opposing views to mine to sail home unopposed.

PostNotInHaste · 09/04/2018 17:02

It would be hugely helpful to those in Westminster if we all decided to forget about Brexit and the absolute pile of bullshit coming from both main parties - would help party funds as they wouldn’t need to fork out to flood social media trying to get us all to focus on local issues.

However for a lot of people who have been watching UK politics go from one disaster to another in the last couple of years, it is an opportunity to make your voice heard in a tiny way and I think a lot of people will do that.

chocolateworshipper · 09/04/2018 17:12

Believe me - my last vote was very much the "Least Bad" option. But I will vote every single time I have the option to vote.

Schroedie42 · 09/04/2018 18:08

We're in a mess, that's for sure, but please don't waste your votes. Plenty of people are still fighting to stay in the EU - I'm afraid our marches don't get the publicity of an MEP throwing fish into the Thames, or burning boats, but there is a significant number who are battling to keep us in the EU. It's not because we're sore losers - but many don't feel that Theresa May's attempts to push through a vote based on a campaign of complete lies doesn't represent fulfilling the 'will of the people'. Now we know what we'll be losing, please use your vote to back a candidate who wants to stay in the EU. If you don't vote, you can't complain about the ghastly state that awaits the UK. Figmentofmyimagination · 09/04/2018 18:15

Find out how best to vote tactically in your borough to procure a candidate who opposes brexit or alternatively, vote to ensure no Tories win, as punishment for brexit.

frankchickens · 09/04/2018 18:23

This thread is hilarious. I can see the Council meetings now - motion to approve the local structure plan for housing and industry. WTF is the anti-Brexit stance on that?

frankchickens · 09/04/2018 18:24

Maybe we’ll get anti-Brexit zones like all the fair trade and nuclear free ones?

ForalltheSaints · 09/04/2018 18:27

Lib Dem or Green, or in Scotland the SNP. Tactically as to whom will run the Tories or Labour the closest.

MinnieMousse · 09/04/2018 18:27

It won't affect local council meetings but the results of local elections do influence the parties at national level.

jasjas1973 · 09/04/2018 18:28

Brexit is going to happen, there is nothing that will stop it, certainly not small FB groups!
Short of a major terrorist attack in NI or a v large employer upping sticks to the EU and saying Brexit is the reason, tbh even then, May will lie and say nowt to do with Brexit and we ll all believe it.

Unfortunately telling people they wont have 15% extra of what they have never had, doesn't strike terror into the masses!

We have to realistic, accept it will happen and make sure, as much as we can/if we can, that we are insulated from its affects.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 09/04/2018 18:29

The local election results can often be treated as an indicator of national voter intentions, so the politicians will take notice of the result.

However, I think it only really makes sense to elect people to the jobs they will actually be doing, i.e. on the basis of their character or their take on local issues or both.

jasjas1973 · 09/04/2018 18:29

Do they? such low turn outs and so far from a GE ?
