It was a medical term a long long long time ago. No doctor practicing these days would ever have used the word in training (l certainly didnt and have been a qualified doctor for 25 years) I quite like the word to describe soneone who is an complete idiot....donald trump, for example is an utter moron. I would be very very very surprised if it offends anyone

so was the r word and it offends me

OP posts:
turtletime · 09/04/2018 02:54

But the term has now passed into the vernacular. No-one is using it to denote a person with disabilities.

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/04/2018 03:01

So was idiot, imbecile and lunatic.

Slut did not always refer to a womans sexual behaviour. Bastard was not considered a swear word but descriptive of a persons legitimacy (or lack thereof).

Words change. Meanings change. Move on.

opionated · 09/04/2018 03:08

no they use it to describe a stupid person and you could say the same about the r word yet that is considered highly offensive

OP posts:
Littlechocola · 09/04/2018 03:11

I don’t know any one who actually does use it. It’s quite dull.

You can't ask the world not to use common words just because they offend you. I suggest a thicker skin.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 09/04/2018 03:16

So what word should we use to describe someone who isn’t very bright?

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/04/2018 03:22

I dont use moron to describe someone who isnt bright. Quite the opposite. I use it to describe a fuckwit!

OP, explain please what a stupid person is.

All these words are useful though in certain circumstances though OP. Moron, retard, cretin are all medical words that have been borrowed. Retard is also used in the motor industry to describe timing in the crankcase because it's a useful and descriptive word. It's up to people to use words carefully not to stop using them entirely surely? You could say that about a lot of words that are a bit archaic. Banning stuff is not always a good route.

opionated · 09/04/2018 03:44

You can't ask the world not to use common words just because they offend you. I suggest a thicker skin. when did i say they offended me?

So what word should we use to describe someone who isn’t very bright? it depends in what context in a situation where someone exibits not very bright behavior you would not resort to an ad hominem attack
OP, explain please what a stupid person is. having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense. not sure its relevant.
There is a difference between moron and retard. Most people know that words like spastic and retard were originally medical terms used to denote some kind of physical and/or mental disability. Most people however have no clue that words like cretin or moron have the same medical origin, therefore their use is less offensive wow actually i think must people are clever and do know the origins of words.

OP posts:
TabbyMack · 09/04/2018 03:50

You don’t know what “ad hominem” means.

No, I won’t stop using a word because some bossy person on the internet tells me to.

Moron means the same as idiot...are you going to “politely request” people stop using that? If so, good luck.

Kokeshi123 · 09/04/2018 04:00

"when did i say they offended me? "
You said that retard offended you in your second post, so it's pretty obvious. And you are posting in the manner of the professionally offended.

At the end of the day, we need to have some words to describe people or acts that aren't/weren't intelligent, and most of these have medical contexts if you go back far enough.

Bowerbird5 · 09/04/2018 04:06

This
Dim

...but I prefer using a phrase...
The lights are on but nobody is home!

opionated · 09/04/2018 04:10

You said that retard offended you in your second post, so it's pretty obvious. And you are posting in the manner of the professionally offended because that word most people agree is offensive moron most people think is not put it this way if you have a child that used the word moron the punishment would be a lot different than if they used the word retard.

Kokeshi123 · 09/04/2018 04:13

I cannot understand your last post.

CaeciliusIstInAtrium · 09/04/2018 04:19

Moron means carrot in Welsh

KC225 · 09/04/2018 04:26

Had no idea cretin was a medical term. What did it mean?

barkingfly · 09/04/2018 04:28

Cretin referred to a level of intellectual development. May I suggest 'Shit for Brains' instead?

SofiaAmes · 09/04/2018 04:29

I think it really does depend on the situation. I would never let my children call anyone any sort of derogatory term like idiot or moron when they were little. And generally it's not a term that I like to hear bandied about as generally most people are not in control of the the intelligence they were born with, or the ability to be educated beyond their genetic start in life. Just as you wouldn't call someone a cripple who was born with a physical disability. Although, having said all of that, when my genius teenage ds is doing something particularly moronic as only teenage boys know how to do (let's drink a cup of ghost pepper salsa and see what happens.....!!!!), I do occasionally use that adjective. Or when dd (who is 15) leaves her place at the table looking like a 2 year old sat there and then wipes it up with a greasy sponge leaving smears all over the table, I do call her a piggy.

Justanamechange · 09/04/2018 04:30

I absolutely agree with the OP. This word along with quite a few others (idiot, cretin, mongol, retard etc) are unnecessary and unpleasant. They were medical terms, referring to learning disabilities.

Coyoacan · 09/04/2018 04:46

Whoa! A couple of weeks ago someone thought that the words "idiot" and "stupid" should be banned.

Moron was invented as a medical term, though why being an ex-medical term automatically makes a term wrong I don't quite understand, but idiot is a term that has been around for centuries was only used medically for a very short period of time. And stupid is just a word from the dictionary. Are there any words permitted for crass behaviour?
