Pretty much what my title says? Who else cuts grass at this time? It's 7pm my son's bedtime and the elderly neighbour has only decided to cut the grass when she has had all day?
It's so loud!

I think when you have a bad sleeper any noise after bedtime can feel late however reality is 7pm is not late and people can’t be expected to sit in silence in the garden because your dc is sleeping.

Redglitter · 07/04/2018 19:30

For heaven's sake 7pm is far from unreasonable. Heaven help you when the good weather comes in and there are kids out playing and people out in their garden til much later than this

TheFairyCaravan · 07/04/2018 19:30

How do you know she’s had all day? She might have been busy doing other things.

It’s swing and roundabouts, imo. You don’t like people making noise at your son’s bedtime but there will also be people who don’t like children playing out early at the weekend when they’re having a lie in. It’s part and parcel of having neighbours.

I do, particularly as the summer heat comes in. I'd faint if I did it in the heat of the day!

I immediately read that as 7am because it wouldn’t cross my mind to be annoyed at 7pm! It’s still early.

turnipfarmers · 07/04/2018 19:35

7pm is fine, I was just thinking of cutting the lawn now but it's started raining.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 07/04/2018 19:36

My dad used to put us to bed in the evenings then cut the grass. We were rascals though and used get up and run from our room across the landing to his room and see if he spotted us at either of the 3 windows. We would knock the windows to see how loud we could get before he noticed. Loved that game.

HumpHumpWhale · 07/04/2018 19:36

Where do you live that the grass needs cutting? Ours still hasn't grown after winter! misses the point
7pm is fine, imo

YABU

The world does not revolve around the bedtime of other people’s small children

HotSauceCommittee · 07/04/2018 19:39

Oh, I like that Zibbididoo! 😂

Winterdown · 07/04/2018 19:39

we have bylaws. It says after 10, I believe. Luckily, we also have mosquitoes, so no lawn mowing in the evening. That being said, everything is irritating to me when it comes to neighbours.

DisorderedOrder · 07/04/2018 19:39

Well yeah it is a perfectly reasonable time, I do remember getting the rage though at anyone making noise after 7pm when I had a non sleeping toddler who woke at the sound of a feather hitting the floor so you have my sympathies. Ime they get used to external noise eventually. I on the other hand dislike summer as I find all the noise in the evening intrusive but that's my issue. You could always move to Scotland though, it's usually far too wet to cut the grass and summer lasts 3 days Grin.

South Essex. Mines above my ankles and every time I look out the window it irritates me. I assume a few mild days, coupled with the damned rain has boosted it.

Calatonia · 07/04/2018 19:40

Where I live it is against the law to mow the lawn or to use a power drill (or anything else similarly noisy) outside "office hours".
Which are definied as: Mon-Fri 8 h 30 - 12 h and 14 h 30 - 19 h 30 ;
Sat, de 9 h - 12 h and 15 h - 19 h ;
Sun and Bank Holidays 10 h - 12 h.
So, to answer @Peachyfizz: today is Saturday, so no, you are not being unreasonable - the law (here) considers that 7 p.m. is quite late enough to be mowing the lawn - and if they want to do it tomorrow they only have a two-hour window between 10 and midday.

However, obviously lots of other posters live in places which don't have the same laws. (I'm in Mainland Europe).

Firenight · 07/04/2018 19:40

In high summer I do mine about 8.30 - cooler out there then and the kids are in bed and out from under my feet.

LizzieDarcy1907 · 07/04/2018 19:48

Our NDN often mows his lawn after 7am in the summer if its hot. Our garden wraps around his in a L shape. He has a very old petrol lawn mower with a concorde engine driving it. Drives us absolutely mad. It's manageable if we leave a fan on and make sure every window is shut tight. But there are times I could cheerfully set fire to his garden shed with him in it. He even mowed one afternoon when we had a gardenful of visitors for a birthday party. We all had to go inside and shut all the doors/windows. He's a joy. 7pm would be perfectly acceptable here.

Was thinking the same...
I agree with other pp though 7pm is not too late

WeAllHaveWings · 07/04/2018 19:50

7pm isn't too late for noise, but at this time of year is too late to cut, the grass wont have time to recover and heal before sunset and leaves it open to disease.

Early morning is too wet and the grass will rip, midday is too hot and the grass will wilt.

Best time is early evening at least a couple of hours before sunset. Maybe mention that to your neighbour and he wont cut so late.

maddiemookins16mum · 07/04/2018 19:50

I'm just jealous their grass is dry enough!!

WeAllHaveWings · 07/04/2018 19:50

she

TalkinPeece · 07/04/2018 19:50

When your son is 15 will you still complain about their 7pm lawn mowing ?

BennyTheBall · 07/04/2018 19:58

7pm is not late.

And lawn mowing is not exactly a noise that prevents a child from sleeping, surely.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 07/04/2018 19:59

It's legal until 11pm.
