Are supermarket pick up points only for taxi’s, AIBU?

I did most of my shopping at one supermarket today but there were just a couple of items I needed from another supermarket. Dh was driving me (I don’t drive) and insisted on waiting at the pick up point for me ‘rather than try finding a space for ages to only be in it 3 minutes’
Anyway, as I got out of the car an older lady shouted at me from a bench that she was waiting on ‘you shouldn’t park there, this is for taxis!’ So I replied (nicely) that it isn’t just for taxis, the sign says pick up point and doesn’t mention taxis and I’ll only be two minutes. She interjected loudly that actually she is a lawyer and it’s for taxis only. Well I’m not about to start having a massive row with the lady so I just replied with a smile ‘are you? Well did you see that I’ve got out of the passenger seat? Perhaps you could have this out with the driver?’ And walked away. When I got back she’d been picked up by her taxi, dh said she’d been complaining to the lady on the next bench that it was for taxis only and again to her taxi driver, both seemed to agree with her. Now, my df is a taxi driver and assured me that it isn’t for taxis only but suggested that it was probably not great for dh to just park and wait there, he said I should get out by the doors, dh should drive to the pick up point and wait for me because then he is genuinely picking me up. I’m not sure I see the difference apart from those people watching me get out assuming were ‘parking’ for ages. AIBU? Please be kind if I am! Blush

I thought they were for anyone who is picking up / being picked up. She was probably annoyed as you kind of parked there, even for a short while, rather than be picked up.

Sarsparella · 07/04/2018 16:30

She’s nuts! Of course a pick up point at a supermarket isn’t just for taxis - my DH picks me up from the one at our supermarket too, ignore her crazy woman

TheQueenOfWands · 07/04/2018 16:30

Nod and smile. Nod and smile.

Don't engage.

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 07/04/2018 16:31

Erm, I think it’s pick up only, not for waiting in while your wife does a supermarket dash. If your legs work fine, there should have been no problem walking a bit further.

Yarboosucks · 07/04/2018 16:31

I suppose that it is for picking up, not waiting… There is a difference!

Redglitter · 07/04/2018 16:32

They're for anyone picking up and dropping off. She's have been better pointing out to you that they're not for parking in while someone pops in for a few items

AlpacaLypse · 07/04/2018 16:32

To me a pick up point is just that - a pull in where someone (and their shopping) who is ready to leave now can be scooped up and driven away. It is not a place for someone to pull up, drop off and loiter around waiting while the passenger finds things and pays for them. I doubt very much you would be as little as three minutes in any supermarket on a Saturday.

Byebyebye · 07/04/2018 16:32

Well I do think you’re being unreasonable to have your DH waiting in the pick up point whilst you shop not matter how quick you say you’ll be.

It gets rammed at my shop so it’s better for a car to stop for a few moments whilst you get in. As a side point the sign at my local Asda says ‘taxi pick up point’ but I wouldn’t care if a regular car used them properly.

Hoppinggreen · 07/04/2018 16:32

It’s not for taxis only but neither is it for blokes waiting while their wives do some shopping. It’s for dropping off and picking up - clue is in the name

Crispbutty · 07/04/2018 16:33

It’s a pick up point for anyone to use. Not a editing point while you go shopping though. He should have dropped you off, driven away and circled round for you or waited for you to call him.

Sirzy · 07/04/2018 16:33

It is for anyone to pick up. But pick up doesn’t include parking while you go and do the shop no matter how small it is.

Crispbutty · 07/04/2018 16:34

Waiting, not editing 😩

ShatnersBassoon · 07/04/2018 16:35

The very subtle clue is in the name; it's not for parking in. It's not just for taxis either, but use your sense and make sure your husband parks properly.

AnneProtheroe · 07/04/2018 16:37

@Crispbutty I quite like the thought of a editing point in a supermarket car park Grin somewhere to wait while you catch up on texts?

TidyDancer · 07/04/2018 16:38

She's incorrect, they are for all pick ups. They are not for waiting though, so you and DH were also wrong.

BreconBeBuggered · 07/04/2018 16:39

No, they're not just for taxis. However, the one at our local supermarket is always clogged up with cars belonging to people who'll only be a minute, so much so that you can't actually rely on there being a space when you need to be picked up and have to wander around the car park with a trolley trying to guess where your DP might try to park. It's a mighty PITA. So I don't blame her for having a go, tbh.

PattiStanger · 07/04/2018 16:40

You are wrong, of course a pick up point isn't for waiting for someone to do their shopping however few items they are getting. You are very entitled to assume that you can park there

Not just for taxis though , for anyone picking up someone with shopping

TheDisreputableDog · 07/04/2018 16:41

You are right in that it's for anyone who is picking someone up, however your use of it was wrong because your DP was not picking you up he was waiting for you.

WeAllHaveWings · 07/04/2018 16:41

Agree with previous posters, its a pick up/drop off point, not a short stay parking space.

DragonsAndCakes · 07/04/2018 16:43

He should have gone to the back of the car park/driven round and then come back to pick you up when you were done.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 07/04/2018 16:45

It’s not for taxis only but neither is it for blokes waiting while their wives do some shopping. It’s for dropping off and picking up - clue is in the name
Copy and paste to save me typing the same thing!
No it's not just for taxis but it's not for parking while some does their shopping.
Your DH should have dropped you, circled round the car park a couple of times then picked you up at the PICK UP point

Ginkypig · 07/04/2018 16:55

It's been mentioned a few times it a pick up point not a wait for a couple of minutes point.

Urapprentice · 07/04/2018 16:56

Yeah, in future we won’t do that. I can see that ‘the clue’s in the name’ but not sure dh would fully agree. He often tries to park in parent and child spaces when the kids are in the car but I’m only dashing in too, I can’t stand that and tell him so, then grab one of the kids and take them with me anyway. I did think it was unfair to have a go at me about it though because I’m clearly not the driver and no, I can’t really control what dh does, he can be stubborn and I just needed some bread and comfort! Grin I’ll get him to do the drive about thing in future.

It's not just for taxis but it's not for stopping and waiting either. I was annoyed today as someone was doing exactly the same thing at Morrison's and I had to walk to the car park for my husband to pick me up (no mean feat when I'm recovering from a broken ankle)

PattiStanger · 07/04/2018 17:04

You're making your DH sound like an arrogant tosser, he must think rules don't apply to him
