Are supermarket pick up points only for taxi’s, AIBU?

I did most of my shopping at one supermarket today but there were just a couple of items I needed from another supermarket. Dh was driving me (I don’t drive) and insisted on waiting at the pick up point for me ‘rather than try finding a space for ages to only be in it 3 minutes’
Anyway, as I got out of the car an older lady shouted at me from a bench that she was waiting on ‘you shouldn’t park there, this is for taxis!’ So I replied (nicely) that it isn’t just for taxis, the sign says pick up point and doesn’t mention taxis and I’ll only be two minutes. She interjected loudly that actually she is a lawyer and it’s for taxis only. Well I’m not about to start having a massive row with the lady so I just replied with a smile ‘are you? Well did you see that I’ve got out of the passenger seat? Perhaps you could have this out with the driver?’ And walked away. When I got back she’d been picked up by her taxi, dh said she’d been complaining to the lady on the next bench that it was for taxis only and again to her taxi driver, both seemed to agree with her. Now, my df is a taxi driver and assured me that it isn’t for taxis only but suggested that it was probably not great for dh to just park and wait there, he said I should get out by the doors, dh should drive to the pick up point and wait for me because then he is genuinely picking me up. I’m not sure I see the difference apart from those people watching me get out assuming were ‘parking’ for ages. AIBU? Please be kind if I am! Blush

You used it incorrectly. And no one can be 3 minutes in a supermarket, unless just using the outside cash point, that's just not possible.

Seniorcitizen1 · 07/04/2018 17:17

I drop off, pick up and wait in these spaces all the time - taxi drivers sometime complain but they can just jog on - the sign doesnt mention taxis and even if it did I would not change my behaviour.

PattiStanger · 07/04/2018 17:19

You sound delightful too seniorcitizen, why would you think a taxi only rule shouldn't apply to you (assuming you aren't a taxi driver)?

Redglitter · 07/04/2018 17:21

Aren't you a charmer senior

19lottie82 · 07/04/2018 17:22

You can’t beat those special kind of nut jobs that claim to be a lawyer / off duty police officer, when they’re obviously not. It’s not going to make me believe you love!

ShatnersBassoon · 07/04/2018 17:22

You're doing it wrong, seniorcitizen. They're not waiting bays - that's what the couple of acres of parking spaces is for.

Nothisispatrick · 07/04/2018 17:36

You're not covering you for DH in glory here!

Nothisispatrick · 07/04/2018 17:37

*your

Urapprentice · 07/04/2018 17:50

Haha well dh is generally a decent bloke but, like many of us, can sometimes let himself down. And what can I do if he decides to wait there? I don’t even drive and I still got the stick for it Hmm I do think this might have given him a little food for thought though, perhaps he’ll be the one suggesting he drives around or finds an actual space next time.

They aren't just for taxis but they are for picking up and dropping off, not sitting around waiting for a few mins.

Tainbri · 07/04/2018 18:51

Literally just set down and pick up, not a place for DH to read the paper! Same applies to airport pick up and drop offs for example, not exclusively for taxis but they have people patrolling and any loitering will land you with a fine!

PattiStanger · 07/04/2018 19:56

It's interesting that you say he's a decent bloke as I genuinely don't think a decent person would knowingly park in a parent/child space and sit in the car with the child/children. That's not "letting yourself down" as there's no reason ever to do it, he's making an active choice to do the wrong thing.

HoneyDragon · 07/04/2018 20:04

There should be a special kind of hell reserved for people who sit in the pick up area of supermarkets. Especially if you’ve booked a taxi on a meter loaded it up and then both of you are sat there for ten minutes because the dickhead in front sits and waits for their do for 15 minuted to do their shopping.

There was a chap sat resolutely in it earlier this week at my local Tesco so of course people collecting stopped at the entrance instead resulting in everyone else have it to creep past on the wrong side of the road then they’d suddenly just drive forward without looking when you’ve committed to going past them safely. It causes bedlam.

Seniorcitizen1 · 07/04/2018 21:29

I get a text to say DP on way out so go to pick up point - sometimes have to wait just like some taxis who go looking for their fare. Wont be changing

Urapprentice · 07/04/2018 22:12

HoneyDragon, that is bad! Our pick up point is different to that, it’s situated so you can pull out when you’re ready, rather than queue.
Patti, maybe you’re right, I love him but he can be a prick sometimes Hmm

She wasn’t a lawyer Grin.

HoneyDragon · 07/04/2018 22:40

Ours is ingeniously between the pavement of the store and a half a foot concrete barrier ...... meaning if someone resolutely sits there than you either have to reverse into a blind bend (if no ones behind you) or just sit there.

In all honestly I’m astonished that someone hasn’t lost it and rammed someone Grin It sadly not unusual to see people blocked in banging on the blockers windows and being ignored or shouted back at.

pastabakewithcheese · 08/04/2018 00:15

Round here people use the pick up point as car park spaces Grin yes the cars are left empty with no one waiting in them either. It's a non issue for us though, no one has the time or the energy to start shouting at people who do this. I've only done it once. Honestly I think it's probably to do with the fact that no one uses taxis here...

Sn0tnose · 08/04/2018 01:25

My local Sainsburys has a very narrow 'drive through' pick up bay so if someone is parked in it, nobody can get around them. They'd have to reverse back into the car park and drive around the outside. It's mostly used by taxis but you do get the odd entitled idiot thinking it's ok to hold everyone else up while their passenger is inside packing their monthly shop. The taxi drivers seem to get around this by reversing back into the bay then taking ages to help their passenger load their shopping into the boot and walk the trolley back to the entrance.

OP, the woman was being ridiculous and your DP was being a selfish arse. The only one who wasn't being unreasonable was you.

minionsrule · 08/04/2018 10:13

Ooh OP i was going to start my own thread on this very subject as people who do this drive me mad.... it wasn't Booths was it?
I go there when it is quiet and every bloody time the drop off/pick up has 2 cars 'parked' up there. Last time a guy parked up, walked in, picked up a basket to do his shopping.
There are even disabled spaces 10 feet away, always free so no excuses there, and the car park when i go is never busy..... boils my piss it really does.
So yes yabvu to park thereAngry

This just happened to me yesterday! on saturday morning. i was parked in my Black BMW X6 at tesco pick up point with my 8yr old daughter . - waiting for my teenage son who said he will be 5 min coming from town through tesco. A older lady about 60 age who had a trolley waiting for her taxi asked me am i uber ? i replied no. (i am actually an uber driver also but was not working at this time or in my uber car)she said oh u shouldnt be parked there then + walked away. Being the Justified Nutcase that i am - i opened my car window + replied its a pick up + drop off point. she didnt respond but soon i could hear her talking to some other ladies about it. When her taxi arrived just ahead of my car, she was talking with the asian taxi driver who agreed with her! i didnt like the INJUSTICE so decided to get out of my car + explain to them! i replied i have asked the tesco security this pick up + drop off point is NOT just for taxis - its for any1 who is picking up some! and im waiting for my teenage old son . i told her go ask the tesco security. she said she just asked her taxi driver who agreed. i replied well hes going to agree hes a flaming taxi driver! Lol Things got heated because she was so annoying , i did shout my point to her. i think she thought because im an asian gal im not going to speak + that made me shout!!but when i was explaining she realised im a bit psychotic lol + didnt even reply as they were putting her shopping in her taxi. she didnt like that i was explaining my point and that she was wrong(stubborn type) as she sat in the taxi the witch said Pi*off! so i also replied Kiss My A!. and beeped my big BMW 2 times extensively as they drove off. Sorry she deserved it with her NARROWMINDED Attitude! Obviously thinks shes ENTITLED in some way?? I was Happy tho i had explained it to her+also gave her what she deserved LoL! . I WAS genuinely waiting to pick some1 up + they were NOT shopping in tesco . my son said he would be only 5 min, but he took longer- about 20 min, but SO What - These are kids and u have to be compassionate Also!!! That Ladys thought train is that SHE is more entitled than me?? that is wrong in itself + Furthermore Even if someone did go in the tesco to shop ,what if theres No other parking spaces in the car park available?? it should be OK to park there. U need to look at the situation + be compassionate in these situations!! GRRRR These dropoff + pick up points are NOT just for Taxis and THAT should be enough! The taxi passengers have NO right to question any1 else .Im Happy i informed this stubborn bat of this!! Maybe next time she wont be an A*HOLE who thinks she Entitled! Yaaaaas!

ZaraBMW · 12/01/2020 07:14

@urapprentice Dont worry about that ignorant lady ! - she has No right to question you here as she does know what the Hell is your situation! So she is basically saying she is more ENTITLED than you!! NO she isnt. Pick up + drop off points are NOT just for Taxis , so that is good enough AS long as you obv dont abuse the situation!! End Of! (Read my story - happened to me yesterday saturday)xx+ i whoooped her As* !! HeeHee

ZaraBMW · 12/01/2020 07:19

@Urapprentice AND if it was just for Taxis ,There would also be a sign- Taxis only!! and There is No sign.
i dont know how to get these emojis on here but it would be ANGRY ANGRY ANGRY ANNOYED then BIG GRIN. I Whooped her stubborn A*ss! Well Deserved

ZaraBMW · 12/01/2020 07:23

is there an Edit option here? few typos lol

spongejack · 12/01/2020 07:28

@Zarabmw you were in the wrong, it doesn't say "waiting" area! I always pray my Porsche in a normal bay in those situations. When I've got my "other" car I leave it on the roadside.
