DH cooked dinner tonight and had some sausages on his plate along with dinner. I commented on how strong they smelled and asked where he got them. He laughed and said “from the bin”.
Last night I was checking the fridge and at the back found a pack of leek sausages dated April 1st...the pack had swelled right up and bubbles were oozing out the side, so I threw them out. These are what he’s just eaten!
Now he burping away and I can’t believe he’s that thick!
AIBU to make him sleep with a bucket tonight Angry

Another one who'd love it if you did a podcast @Weedsnseeds1

babyno5 · 09/04/2018 18:26

weedsnseeds1 the ciguatera transmission one always baffled me too!

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/04/2018 19:02

Did your auditor show up today babyno5 ?

ColinTheDachshund · 09/04/2018 19:05

I just can't throw food away. I'd rather chance it and get sick. The same with finishing food on my plate. I just can't leave any.

You need to get a dog.Grin

babyno5 · 09/04/2018 19:07

No they didn’t weedsnseeds1 breathing a sigh of relief for another week 😂😂. There is one benefit from having a 5 day audit!

blueduvetface · 09/04/2018 19:43

I have a dog and chickens. Blush

It's definitely been better since I got them but (and I know this sounds ridiculous) the dog has a really sensitive tummy and I worry about her getting sick.

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/04/2018 20:19

I'd be worrying your CB have forgotten about you babyno5 , they shouldn't be doing an unannounced the week leading up to the due date Shock

midnightmisssuki · 09/04/2018 20:29

YUCK!

babyno5 · 09/04/2018 22:21

I had the same thought too and called CB this afternoon to “remind” them and was “assured” they hadn’t forgotten about us! Guess I know what I’ll be doing next week weedsnseeds1!!!

FluffyWhiteTowels · 10/04/2018 07:58

Fascinating thread

Weedsnseeds1

What is the link (if any) to the old wives tale about only eating she'll fish at certain times of the year? I think it's something like you can only eat them of their is ber in the month?

My mum grew up by the coast and was very weary of eating shell fish.

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/04/2018 09:28

treesagreen it's only eat with an R in the month.
It's not really an old wives tales. This is spawning / breeding season for a lot of shellfish and crustaceans in the UK / Northern Europe.
The shellfish won't be at their best quality wise as all their energy is going into reproduction. Plus stocks will be depleted if everyone is chomping their way through heaps of gravid females.
Doesn't really apply to imported stuff like fresh water prawns or green lip mussels as season is different and / or they are farmed

SinceWhenDid · 10/04/2018 09:29

Shellfish I think it there is an "r" in the month? I presume it is to do with the months without an "r" are warmer months?

SinceWhenDid · 10/04/2018 09:30

Cross post - I was wrong 😄

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/04/2018 09:33

Plus algal blooms ( and associated toxins) more likely in the summer. Pre reliable refrigeration there would also be an increased risk if you were buying oysters or something away from the coast as the non-R months are the hot ones.

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/04/2018 09:35

Yes, since you are correct, although not too much of a concern nowerdays as we have proper temperature controlled transport, storage and display. But historically a genuine issue.

SinceWhenDid · 10/04/2018 09:41

Thank you. All such fascinating stuff.

TreesAgreen · 10/04/2018 09:43

Thanks weeds and since

QueenOfPharts · 10/04/2018 10:31

Just read the whole thread ConfusedShockEnvy not envy thats my spew face!
I'm now rushing off to the toilet...I think I have the shits by proxyGrin weeds babyno5 is that a thing?

CockOffPostmanPat · 10/04/2018 11:39

I have a question if you're not too fed up with this unofficial q&a weeds.

Does cooking "reset" the use by date on meat and fish? So if for eg, I cooked some mince on its use by, would leftovers be ok to eat the next day, or should they be discarded?

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/04/2018 12:25

cockoff yes, you could cook raw meat, cool, then eat within a couple of days as you are destroying bacteria in the raw meat.
The UB date of the original raw meat is worked out by the packer so that anything present ( which with raw meat, there will be due to the nature of the product) doesn't multiply to dangerous levels and cooking instructions are given so the product is safe to consume if followed.
There's a bit of a margin of error built in too, to allow for customer " abuse" such as leaving their shopping in the car while they have a browse around the other shops or meet a friend for a coffee.
You won't get as long a life as the original raw meat, because you have removed any additional protective barriers such as vacuum or MAP packing.
Be careful not to cross contaminate the cooked meat with raw through knives, chopping boards etc. and a few days is fine.
Or freeze raw and cook straight after defrost when you want to eat it.

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/04/2018 12:27

Queen revulsion sickness as in vomiting at a bad smell / sight is certainly a thing.
Not come across Munchausen's diarrhoea before thoughGrin

halfwitpicker · 10/04/2018 12:29

Fascinating stuff, thanks, weeds.

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/04/2018 12:49

Sorry Sadie just seen your scallop question, didn't mean to ignore you!
In theory yes, there's a risk scallops are still filter feeders like mussels and oysters.
However, they don't seem to be implicated in food poisoning outbreaks very often.
If I had to make an educated guess why, it's probably because scallops are mobile, they swim.
Other bivalves tend to be fixed to rocks or burrowed into a sand bed, so any problem with the water in that area they are building up stocks of toxin / virus etc. while scallops roam around a lot more.
Also, it's a lot easier for members of the public to collect mussels, clams and so on. You just wait for the ride to go out and pick them or dig them up. Scallops you need to be able to dive ( or own a dredging boat)!
They all get placed in ranks of UV treated seawater for a bit before sale to clean them out.
Babyno5 said she had worked in seafood, so may be able to add more later.

Tide, not ride...
