I am a self-confessed perfectionist so am genuinely interested as to whether I am being over critical here.

I got a chair reupholstered, as per the picture below, and am not 100% satisfied with the outcome. Anyone else agree or am I being unrealistic?

Would you be disappointed with this?

I agree. They should have either

a. lined up the pattern properly or
b.let you know that they couldn't line up the pattern for some reason

Then you could have decided what to do, whether to change fabric etc.

It would really annoy me too!

DiegoMadonna · 06/04/2018 16:15

I honestly never knew people cared about things like this. What a funny old world.

TheHandmaidsTail · 06/04/2018 16:20

OP asks (effectively) can you see that the pattern doesn't match?

Bitter/unhelpful/horrible people think that the question is

Do you think my fabric is tasteful?
Do you think this is my house and do you think it's tidy?
Do you think the colour is disgusting?
Do you think you can "polish a turd"? (wtaf)
Should I let thing like this bother me when children are starving in the world?

Why are people so mean??!

Ellie56 · 06/04/2018 16:22

If you are not happy with it, you need to say something now, or it will bug you for evermore.

TheJoyOfSox · 06/04/2018 16:32

I wouldn’t be disappointed with it, it looks fine. I maybe would have made it clear that I was a bit anal about things though, when I picked out the fabric and clarified that the birds at the seams would be perfect.
It’s lovely fabric too.

Livinglifepeachy · 06/04/2018 16:35

I don't like the 3/4 row from the left what's happening there.

Livinglifepeachy · 06/04/2018 16:36

You could always get cushions that cover it up and to be fair it might not be that noticeable x

Loonoon · 06/04/2018 23:33

I'm just binging on The Crown on Netflix (very late to the party I know). They have shown similar style chairs at Buckingham Palace (queen) and at Clarence House (her sister) and none of them have the back cushion and seat cushion patterns lined up. Perhaps your upholsterer is secretly 'by appointment' OP?

Bouledeneige · 06/04/2018 23:45

I didn't see it at first but once you spot it you can't un-see-it. However, as a (former) keen dressmaker I'd hazard a guess that it wouldn't be possible to pattern match on the seams with that print and the curved shape of the back. I used to be pretty good at pattern matching and I'd see that as quite a challenge. Smaller prints or plains as said earlier would work better.

For the price paid I'd live with it.

SabineUndine · 06/04/2018 23:52

Was there enough fabric to match it?

Boulshired · 07/04/2018 00:02

He should have told you on seeing the fabric that the curved back was always going to impact the pattern. Even if he had a perfect match after wear the pattern will also slip.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 07/04/2018 00:15

Am shocked at the out and out rudeness on this thread. What on earth has got into folk?!

Yes, I would be unhappy with the pattern matching. Good that you have questioned this. I hope they respond in a helpful manner.

I like the chair, not that you were asking though ;-)

smurfit · 07/04/2018 06:24

I didn't see it initially but now that I have, I can't unsee it. I'd be pretty annoyed and would say something. I might not make a major fuss about it but I'd definitely be trying to get it resolved.

Ofthread · 07/04/2018 06:32

I think it is done correctly with whole birds on the important edges visually. Am I not seeing something here? You either cut the birds in half at the most prominent places or in the middle of the seat.

That pattern on that chair would be very very difficult to match. As it shows in the picture, when you have the chair in front of you, it will be very difficult to miss.

However, I would just accept it, and ask for a reduction. I'd then live with it whilst baby is small and as it will probably get marked if you're using it as a feeding chair, I'd then recover at a later date.

What the upholsterer should've done is contact you (via the shop) to say they are unable to pattern match because of the nature of the print on the fabric because I imagine you would need a helluva lot more fabric to match.

There are some very rude people on this thread, I imagine they've been drinking or something.

LynetteScavo · 07/04/2018 07:35

I've just run this by my very fussy DH. My MIL makes curtains professionally and mismatched ready made curtains from Laura Ashley give him the rage.

Even he says it's OK, considering the print you chose. He says it would have taken a lot more fabric to get it matched exactly.

I really like the fabric, and the chair, and I wouldn't have noticed the mud match if it hadn't been pointed out to me. Smile

Fletchasaurus · 07/04/2018 07:58

Now I've rtft and seen it pointed out, I've gone back to look at your op and I can't see anything else ( it's like the FedEx arrow!). Hope your discussions with them come good!

LightDrizzle · 07/04/2018 08:09

I didn’t notice until posters picked up on it, but I do think you should have been warned about the pattern matching issue before they proceeded, and I wouldn’t be happy.

As an aside, I think Agatha was joking about tidying the room, it’s obviously a workshop not a nursery.

HeadingForSunshine · 07/04/2018 09:32

Might a reasonable solution be to keep the patterned fabric on the seat and get them to replace the back in plain yellow or cream?

PussCatTheGoldfish · 07/04/2018 09:39

It's not pattern matched, but given the shape of the chair that would be very tricky. But it would annoy me to look at, after all it's a statement chair to be seen.

They could have given you a heads up that it wouldn't or couldn't match. Have you asked the upholsterer about it?

FWIW, I like the fabric and the chair!

thecatsarecrazy · 07/04/2018 09:51

It would bug me too op. This is how a carpet fitter layed our lino in the hall way. Apparently this is the 1st time its happened in 18 years Hmm

Would you be disappointed with this?

thecatsarecrazy · 07/04/2018 09:53

Now it bugs me every time i walk past

UpOver · 07/04/2018 09:58

Ugh that would bug me too.

UpOver · 07/04/2018 10:01

I get that to pattern match exactly would be tricky on this chair but you could have easily made it look better matched than it does now. I think there is an acceptable middle ground between perfect and not bothered to try
