I am a self-confessed perfectionist so am genuinely interested as to whether I am being over critical here.

I got a chair reupholstered, as per the picture below, and am not 100% satisfied with the outcome. Anyone else agree or am I being unrealistic?

Would you be disappointed with this?

The colour is interesting.

LizzieDarcy1907 · 05/04/2018 21:48

DH is in the trade. He said that's terrible pattern matching.....

purplecorkheart · 05/04/2018 21:50

I wouldn't be overly happy but to be fair it isn't a great pattern to match up given the curves, angles in the chair. It may not have been possible to do so given that there was only a certain amount of fabric.

Schlimbesserung · 05/04/2018 21:50

Did you definitely provide enough fabric for it to be properly matched?

EasterBunBun · 05/04/2018 21:53

I used to sew a lot and it has left me with a tendency to twitch when I see expensive clothes, or soft furnishings, that haven't been pattern matched properly. Still in recovery from making three Roman blinds across a bay - one is a smidgen out and it yells at me every time I walk in the room.

wentmadinthecountry · 05/04/2018 21:54

Anything that symmetrical/obvious is going to be really hard to do wonderfully.
The choice of fabric doesn't really work with the design of chair I don't think - would be hard to make it look perfect.

Thistledew · 05/04/2018 21:54

There was some fabric left over.

I just find it a bit odd that the upholsterer spent some time and care consulting me on how I wanted the piping but didn't let me know there would be a problem with joining the fabric.

It would depend on the repeat, but that's always usually displayed either on the back of the fabric or on the pattern book it came from. To be fair, that was a very good price but a professional should have been able to tell you how many metres of fabric you would need. DH always over-estimates if it is the customers' own fabric for this very reason.

tarheelbaby · 05/04/2018 21:58

I would be disappointed. I would expect an upholsterer to match up pattern properly or pleasingly in every way - seams, seat vs back, outside back of chair. Your photo is disappointing because it's not straight on so I can't see if the pattern is centered on the chair but doesn't seem to align from the back to the seat and it doesn't match on the seams across the back. The more I look at it the worse it is and , it would make me crazy.

Hideous pattern btw - doesn't match chair style, doesn't look suitable for a chair (better for curtains?) and is vile in general but that's no excuse for poor alignment. Perhaps you did not supply enough to allow for repeat in pattern? Large figured patterns often need extra yardage/meters to make things align nicely. Still, I would expect upholsterer to line things up better or call to ask for more fabric or explain or summat.

Skittlesandbeer · 05/04/2018 21:59

I think you’re stuck with it, given there’s no remaining fabric to redo it.

I also don’t think you’ve got much of a case for getting all or some money back, since you didn’t specify how you wanted the fabric matched on such a difficult pattern.

You’ll need to have more detailed discussions with potential upholsterers next time, including getting a price based on a sample of the fabric. Getting fabric & quotes separately leads to this, I’m afraid. A good upholsterer will be able to tell you beforehand what level of matching is possible. Have a chat to them now, by all means, but don’t expect a lot.

DragonsAndCakes · 05/04/2018 22:01

A quick google suggests the paterm isn’t normally lined up when reupholstering.
I did notice it, but only because I was trying to find something possibly wrong.

DragonsAndCakes · 05/04/2018 22:01

PatterN

SukiTheDog · 05/04/2018 22:02

Hmmm.....now you’ve pointed it out, yes, I can see it.

MumofBoysx2 · 05/04/2018 22:03

No that would annoy me too! Why did they not match up the fabric so the birds were equally spaced?

Drainedandconfused · 05/04/2018 22:05

I don't notice things like patterns lining up, I think it looks beautiful, it's a lovely chair.

lljkk · 05/04/2018 22:06

yes the bird spacing is all wrong, for sure on left as I look at it & maybe on right, too. I noticed it easily, too (even though am not a perfectionist). I don't know if it bothers me. Probably would bother me for £260.

I made the guys relay the lino in my bathroom b/c the pattern wasn't parallel with skirting board. It was so flipping obvious, how could they not realise?

ILookedintheWater · 05/04/2018 22:07

For the price paid and given that there was a shortage of fabric it's a nice job. If I'd been doing it myself I'd have picked a smaller repeat or bought 2.5 metres more to pick the best pattern match.

Thistledew · 05/04/2018 22:10

What should I do? Do I learn to live with it or speak to the upholsterer?

I could speak to the fabric shop to see if they have any more of the fabric in their other branch, or can order it.

OP posts:
DextroDependant · 05/04/2018 22:11

I couldn't see anything wrong until it was pointed out.

I love the fabric though, put a cushion on it and no one will know.

justforthisthread101 · 05/04/2018 22:12

I’d speak to the upholsterer.

Bluelady · 05/04/2018 22:13

I think you have to learn to live with it. It's exactly why I had a chair reupholstered in a plain fabric. I don't think it was particularly cheap. I paid £285 including fabric.

FROhecan · 05/04/2018 22:13

Say something - you'll always regret it if you don't.

LizzieDarcy1907 · 05/04/2018 22:14

The fabric is on Amazon OP for £9.99 a metre. www.amazon.co.uk/Scandi-Mustard-Cotton-Curtain-Upholstery/dp/B06X99G9WW?tag=mumsnetforum-21

flapjackfairy · 05/04/2018 22:15

No still dont get it ! Looks fine to me !

AnnieAnoniMouser · 05/04/2018 22:16

How bloody rude.
