I am a self-confessed perfectionist so am genuinely interested as to whether I am being over critical here.

I got a chair reupholstered, as per the picture below, and am not 100% satisfied with the outcome. Anyone else agree or am I being unrealistic?

Would you be disappointed with this?

Years of practise *Thistledew". I'm a demon at finding patterns based on random descriptions from DH's customers.....Grin.

MsJolly · 05/04/2018 22:22

Wow-well done Sherlock @lizzie!

Catspaws · 05/04/2018 22:23

I'm really surprised they haven't pattern matched on the seams! Haven't RTT but I wouldn't be happy, it looks a bit odd.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 05/04/2018 22:24

That would drive me bonkers.

I wouldn’t have chosen that fabric because the print is large, there’s no space between the birds & with the shape of the chair, matching it was never going to be easy, but they should have done a much better job than that or spoken to you about it.

I’d definitely be talking to them.

Howeve, it’s going in a childs room, you’ll probably barely see the fabric again.

Gide · 05/04/2018 22:25

I hope you haven’t paid? That would be going straight back.

Oldraver · 05/04/2018 22:25

I used to work for a firm that made sofa's (more high end than DFS) and it absolutely should be pattern matched. It would drive me bonkers

SleepFreeZone · 05/04/2018 22:28

The upholsterer will probably tell you there wasn’t enough fabric to pattern match. Personally I would be requesting the back was redone and rebuy the correct amount of fabric.

Just to be really picky they should also be lining the pattern up vertically so the seat flows with the back.

Rudi44 · 05/04/2018 22:30

I think if that if it was done by a professional upholsterer I would be very disappointed that the pattern doesn't match up.

bbcessex · 05/04/2018 22:31

Will look great in a child’s room.. lovely & bright.

Does it really, really bother you? Definitely speak to the upholsterer, but it still looks great & striking even if it can’t be changed 👍

AgathaRaisonDetra · 05/04/2018 22:31

The chair looks OK, but you might want to tidy your room.

GetKnitted · 05/04/2018 22:32

as someone else has pointed out, because of the difference in size at the top and bottom of the back of the chair, it wouldn't be possible to match the patterns at the seams without the fabric turning to the bias. this would then stretch oddly and go saggy much quicker. I don't think you have any right to withold payment if you didn't specify that the pattern should be continuous.

viques · 05/04/2018 22:33

I would be disappointed, especially since the seat shows clearly how the pattern should look, I can see that the back is panelled but would have expected a better match. a shame because the actual upholstery looks good.

Gide · 05/04/2018 22:35

For real? What an idiotic thing to post.

Bolokov · 05/04/2018 22:36

I would imagine, due to the upholstery equipment laying around...the chair is still at the upholsterer

Frankly even if it wasn’t, you sound like a plank

TheClitterati · 05/04/2018 22:37

The pattern would never match perfectly, but provided they had enough fabric they could have done s better job matching it.

I do think it's a gorgeous chair. I like your bold fabric choice.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 05/04/2018 22:41

I love it!

fourandnomore · 05/04/2018 22:45

I really like it, beautiful chair, love the colour and print, if it was being pattern matched the upholsterer should have told you to buy the width of the pattern repeat on top of the amount of fabric needed so perhaps they weren't expecting a print? If I were you I would have an honest conversation about whether they usually pattern match or not as you were expecting it to. On clothes it annoys me but I actually think this looks great the way it is as the shape of the chair wouldn't allow full matching with a straight pattern anyway so this may look much better than an attempt to match.

Pixiedust1973 · 05/04/2018 22:48

Love it. Looks perfect!

blaaake · 05/04/2018 22:50

It's very poor workmanship and I would refuse to pay. As PP pointed out, though, you did get the work done quite cheap.

BugsyMcGee · 05/04/2018 22:51

A large scale square pattern repeat is always going to be difficult to line up perfectly when the lines and seams of the chair are curvy in nature. Did you provide them with enough spare fabric. It would be literally impossible to get whole birds in complete symmetry with that pattern on that shape chair. I would put cushions on it to break up the pattern or be prepared to pay again if you cannot live with it.

Thistledew · 05/04/2018 22:54

Thanks for all of the replies.

I've messaged the seller (to complicate things further I just bought the chair from an antiques shop and they arranged the reupholstering for me). I've said that I'm struggling to accept the pattern matching as it is and asked them to suggest a solution.

I saw the pattern/seam issues straight away. If I’d paid a lot to have it reupholstered then yes it would def be bothering me.

It’s not immediately noticeable but I would have to say something.
