I am a self-confessed perfectionist so am genuinely interested as to whether I am being over critical here.

I got a chair reupholstered, as per the picture below, and am not 100% satisfied with the outcome. Anyone else agree or am I being unrealistic?

Would you be disappointed with this?

I think I would have expected them to pattern match the birds. It would take a bit more fabric as there would be more waste so may have cost a bit more but they should have at least discussed it with you.

unfortunateevents · 06/04/2018 00:07

Surely it isn't possible to match up the pattern on the back of the chair though because of the curve? Even if the pattern matched at the base of the back, because of the increased width of the chair as the back and arms open out, there is no way that the pattern can match all the way up - or if the pattern matches then the birds will be sloping downwards on the arms which will make the whole thing look lopsided. To be honest, I don't think the pattern works with that chair at all. Professional upholsterers should probably have pointed that out to you though - were you insistent on using this fabric?

BlankTimes · 06/04/2018 01:00

It would be easier to see the misalignment and how far out of true it is, if you took a photo straight in front of the chair, rather than the angled one you've used.

If there's not enough fabric left to redo either the seat or the back to match the one in situ, can someone make cushions using any offcuts of the fabric appliqued onto them, so the mis-alignments of the birds between the seat and the back is not so obvious?

Hard to understand why it's happened though, I'd have thought centering a patterned fabric on the seat and back to match would be upholstery 101.

This one's completely off at all joins, but it's not an expensive chair. www.jdwilliams.co.uk/shop/jensen-chair/SG852/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=7201&ci_sku=SG85202&ci_src=18615224&promo=6230&cm_mmc=Googlebase--JDWilliams--Product%20Feeds-_-na&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3quN752k2gIVBLvtCh3EzQXDEAQYAyABEgKvYfD_BwE&dclid=CNLxjPmdpNoCFUcTGwodxugKsw#colour:Blue%20Print,size:&promo=6202

Thistledew · 06/04/2018 01:05

Nothing was mentioned about the fabric not being suitable or it being problematic to use for that design. It's not expensive stuff so I wouldn't have been too upset if I had had to change it.

The original price was not supposed to include replacing the springs as it only became apparent that these needed doing once it was stripped down. I do appreciate them putting in new ones for the same price but for the price I still would have expected an end product that doesn't irritate me.

I've spent a year doing night feeds perched on a hard stool. This chair is supposed to invoke the law of Sod and encourage DS to night wean sooner rather than later! It's also a little note to myself that with some luck maybe DS won't be the last time I have to do night feeds, so I've already got some emotional investment in it!

Oh no it clearly stands out its so 'off' and you shouldnt have to accept that, I would politely insist they redo it no extra charge.
I love the chair itself and fabric choice/colour but that pattern really makes it look terrible.

blueskypink · 06/04/2018 01:20

It's a gorgeous chair and fabric. I couldn't see what the problem is, but one of those things that is difficult to unsee once it's pointed out.

Hopefully you will get a satisfactory response to your email - ie that they will redo it properly.

AjasLipstick · 06/04/2018 02:56

Unfortunate it's always possible to match it up. You have to stitch two pieces together so the pattern meets and then use that. A skilled upholsterer would do that as a matter of course.

ScarlettSahara · 06/04/2018 11:42

Love the chair and the fabric is so cheerful but yes the non-aligned pattern would bother me every time I looked at it. Hope you get it sorted OP. I would have loved a chair like that for night-feeding (had an uncomfortable straight backed chair)!

fourandnomore · 06/04/2018 13:38

Any response from the upholsterer? Interested to see if they will accept that it's not a good job.

bonzo77 · 06/04/2018 13:52

Whoah. That’s horrible. Not the fabric or chair, I like both. I’d want the pattern centralised, level and matched. It’s really obvious. I make clothes not furnishings, so maybe I’m being too critical. But I can absolutely see why you’re not happy. Not sure how you’d approach it, asking the upholsterer for suggestions sounds a good start.

IsItThatTimeAlready131 · 06/04/2018 13:58

Have just seen this thread and immediately noticed the birds weren't matched along the seams (but I notice these things in everyday life), I am terrible to live with!

I would want it sorted as it would grate on me every time I saw it, hope it gets sorted to your satisfaction OP.

(If there's not enough fabric to redo or it's hard to keep the line of the birds because of the shape of the chair, what about having the 'wings' of the chair done in a plain yellow to match the background, or the same grey colour the birds are done in, or another plain colour that goes?)

Thistledew · 06/04/2018 13:59

It's a bit complicated in that my contract and dealings are with the antiques shop, not the upholsterer directly. I wanted to buy a chair like this but the shop did not have a suitable one in a finished state. They did however have this one which had just come into their shop and it needed reupholstering. They offered for me to buy it and choose my own fabric, but they would use their usual upholsterer and arrange for the work to be done.

Unfortunately, of the two owners of the shop, the one I have been dealing with is out of the country until Monday so I will have to wait until he gets back.

AHH, good. Plenty of time for a quick tidy up then.

LeighaJ · 06/04/2018 15:25

The bright colour and pattern would probably distract many from noticing anything else...

BlondeB83 · 06/04/2018 15:34

The back panel looks wonky to me.

teenagefanclub · 06/04/2018 15:35

Love the fabric and the chair but that would annoy me. They should have told you before they did it what the risk was of the pattern not matching. It could have resulted in you needing to buy more fabric due to pattern repeat or whatever, but then at least you'd have know upfront

battenbergbutterfly · 06/04/2018 15:36

Yes I'd be disappointed. The pattern should match up. It seems to at one side but is completely out on the other. I'd ask them to redo it.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/04/2018 15:41

I absolutely love it OP but yes, I'd expect a match, especially as there was fabric left over

Greenglassteacup · 06/04/2018 15:41

This would annoy me too OP. We have very badly aligned metro tiles in th bathroom & it irritates the hell out of me

TerrorAustralis · 06/04/2018 15:50

It would bug me, so I think YANBU.

3stonedown · 06/04/2018 15:52

It took me about 15 mins to work out the problem so I don't think you have to worry about others spotting it but now I've seen it, it would annoy me too.

DoneDisappeared · 06/04/2018 15:53

Did they not explain that this might happen?

(I'd want it matched up too!)

Redpony1 · 06/04/2018 15:54

Now i know, i think it would bug me, hopefully they resolve it for you.

Hideous pattern btw - doesn't match chair style, doesn't look suitable for a chair (better for curtains?) and is vile in general

How rude!! & only in your opinion. I love the pattern, colour and think it really suits the chair.

chocatoo · 06/04/2018 15:58

it would annoy me that the 'central' stripe isn't central so the whole thing looks lop sided, but that might just be the angle of the photo.

SoupDragon · 06/04/2018 16:11

AHH, good. Plenty of time for a quick tidy up then.
