To feel spooked...

So myself and DP went away for the night on Frisay. We left 11am Friday morning and returned yesterday at 6:30pm.

Before I left the house I tidied round, straightened all my cushions etc and cleared all the kitchen sides. We left via the side door in the kitchen. The front door was locked and my only key for this door was with my mum. The patio doors were locked.

Pulling back onto the drive yesterday immediately noticed the wheelie bin was open. Could have been wind I thought. DP unloaded the car and put coats etc on the kitchen side whilst I fed our rabbits in the garden.

I came into the house and started to hang the coats up and noticed a phone on the side. I asked DP whose it was. He thought it was mine and that I'd left it there.

The phone was dead but it was an old iphone with the old charging port. Nothing else was missing or had moved.

I remembered that we had an old phone the same as the one we found in a cupboard under the TV in a shoe box under a pile of other packaging. The phone was gone from the box so I deducted it was that actual phone. We don't even have a charger for it.

We also have an ottoman storage box with a cushion on top. The cushion had moved as it the lid had been lifted. Nothing had moved inside.

We do not use the front door unless my mum comes to feed the rabbits. The mat is always square to the door and due to a leaky seal it gets a damp patch along one edge. The mat was twisted and dry half way along. My washing basket which was on the mat was moved slightly forward.

I rang my mum. They had been miles away all day and would never come in without telling us.

Now, we rent. Our landlord lives directly opposite. They were in when we got back. I know they have a side door key but to my knowledge they have never used it. We had our inspection last week and he was sure to make sure I was present. I haven't broached it with them yet.

I am completely freaked out. Why would anyone come in, look for a phone we forgot we had and leave it on the side? And take nothing else?!

My mum is giving me the front door key so I can leave it in the door to prevent people from getting in.

AIBU to be spooked?!

Yes he thought it was my work phone actually which I keep usually in my work bag and to be honest he just saw a phone and didn't really pay much attention to what it was

Also, the cushion, phone left on the side, doormat slightly moved - these are all small mistakes made by someone who thought they were covering their tracks. Therefore they will have looked everywhere else - in all your drawers and private papers etc. You only saw clues where they didn't cover their tracks properly. I don't know why you haven't called the police immediately. This is not a game.

Vitalogy · 01/04/2018 12:46

look right at them. You will have your answer then. That's what I was thinking.

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2018 12:47

If it was the landlord (or in fact whoever) they didn't seem to cover their tracks did they? Op you should definitely call the police.

LMW1990 · 01/04/2018 12:52

The LL has called me. They saw nothing and they haven't been in. They were upset I didn't tell them yesterday

OP posts:
Oaktree273 · 01/04/2018 12:54

In that case definitely call the police. Either it was them and they are lying, or it was a stranger. Whatever - nobody had permission to be in your home. Call the police.

dustarr73 · 01/04/2018 13:02

The LL are upset you didnt tell them what yesterday.

chequeplease · 01/04/2018 13:13

Have you checked with your other neighbors?

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2018 13:13

About the break in presumably

Pidlan · 01/04/2018 13:15

The LL are reacting suspiciously. Why would they turn this into being upset with you?!

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 01/04/2018 13:18

I had a landlord do this once.

He actually came in when we were out and put a massive burn mark with an iron on the carpet under a rug.

I assumed this was to keep our deposit. When I phoned him he told me the mark had “always been there” and not to worry.

It definitely had not.

We moved our soon after. I had suspicions he had been coming in a few times.

GeminiWarrior · 01/04/2018 13:19

How bizzare- definitely get a camera

Buxtonstill · 01/04/2018 13:25

Change the locks as soon as you can. Bet your life it’s your landlord!

BamALamA · 01/04/2018 13:31

Why would they turn this into being upset with you?!

Because it's their property and someone unauthorised might have access to it. They're perfectly reasonable to be upset. OP should have told them straight away rather than announcing it to MN first.

AjasLipstick · 01/04/2018 13:32

Text the LL back and say "I've just contacted our remote security provider...they're going to retrieve the footage from when we were away...so we will let you know as soon as we get it back...might call the police too"

If they come round then it was them. It's bullshit but they won't know that for sure.

SparklyMagpie · 01/04/2018 13:39

AjasLipstick I quite like that idea an you could say you just thought you'd mention to see if they noticed anyone going in, before saying you will check the security footage

How odd! I'd be feeling just like you though and would be very unsettled until the mystery could be solved.

I think I'd want to change the locks and invest in a camera

Or actually, could you get one of those doorbells that have the camera on the front? That way you could get a good picture if anyone was sniffing around near the door

Hope it gets figured out OP !

PattiStanger · 01/04/2018 13:42

I'd also reply to the LL , thank them and say you're now going to call 101, the policemight want to speak to them. Do you have any other neighbours you could check with?

Tweetiepie1000 · 01/04/2018 13:47

You really need to call the police and also tell your LL you have done so.

How horrible for you. Flowers

spicerack · 01/04/2018 14:13

agree with telling LL you will check your security footage and call the police and see how they react

FifiVoldemortsChavvyCousin · 01/04/2018 14:19

Get some motion sensor cameras, they are quite cheap nowadays.

Scuzzlet · 01/04/2018 15:28

Any update OP?

LMW1990 · 01/04/2018 16:53

The reason I didn't contact them immediately was because I did not know how to broach it. They have taken offense to me asking and were very short/ off with me to be honest. I'm going to call 101 for advice.

OP posts:
Vitalogy · 01/04/2018 17:02

They have taken offense to me asking and were very short/ off with me to be honest. As others have suggested get some cameras for peace of mind. I bet you aren't allowed to change the locks are you.

LMW1990 · 01/04/2018 17:09

To be honest I haven't looked into it. I'm going to put a camera for the side door and a key in the other locks for now

OP posts:
dustarr73 · 01/04/2018 17:12

They have taken offence cause they where in your house.Attack is the best form of defence.

I would call 101 and ask for advice.
