To feel spooked...

So myself and DP went away for the night on Frisay. We left 11am Friday morning and returned yesterday at 6:30pm.

Before I left the house I tidied round, straightened all my cushions etc and cleared all the kitchen sides. We left via the side door in the kitchen. The front door was locked and my only key for this door was with my mum. The patio doors were locked.

Pulling back onto the drive yesterday immediately noticed the wheelie bin was open. Could have been wind I thought. DP unloaded the car and put coats etc on the kitchen side whilst I fed our rabbits in the garden.

I came into the house and started to hang the coats up and noticed a phone on the side. I asked DP whose it was. He thought it was mine and that I'd left it there.

The phone was dead but it was an old iphone with the old charging port. Nothing else was missing or had moved.

I remembered that we had an old phone the same as the one we found in a cupboard under the TV in a shoe box under a pile of other packaging. The phone was gone from the box so I deducted it was that actual phone. We don't even have a charger for it.

We also have an ottoman storage box with a cushion on top. The cushion had moved as it the lid had been lifted. Nothing had moved inside.

We do not use the front door unless my mum comes to feed the rabbits. The mat is always square to the door and due to a leaky seal it gets a damp patch along one edge. The mat was twisted and dry half way along. My washing basket which was on the mat was moved slightly forward.

I rang my mum. They had been miles away all day and would never come in without telling us.

Now, we rent. Our landlord lives directly opposite. They were in when we got back. I know they have a side door key but to my knowledge they have never used it. We had our inspection last week and he was sure to make sure I was present. I haven't broached it with them yet.

I am completely freaked out. Why would anyone come in, look for a phone we forgot we had and leave it on the side? And take nothing else?!

My mum is giving me the front door key so I can leave it in the door to prevent people from getting in.

AIBU to be spooked?!

There you go then, it's the old person's ghost wondering how to work them new-fangled phones.

Rudgie47 · 01/04/2018 12:00

The landlord has been in and had a rummage round.
I'd go over and say that you have had a break in and have contacted the police who will be coming round later and look right at them. You will have your answer then.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 01/04/2018 12:03

I'd guess landlord. But I'd also contact the police and ask for advice because alerting the landlord to call their bluff sort of defeats the purpose if they're genuinely the ones who've been in. I'm sure the local police station can advise you.

Ryder63 · 01/04/2018 12:10

I was hoping for woo Easter Sad - but it HAS to be LL related. I would do as pps advise, tell your LL you are contacting the police about an intruder and watch his reaction.

pigsDOfly · 01/04/2018 12:10

Not sure the police would be interested if nothing's been stolen.

Definitely sounds like the LL has been having a rummage. Camera sounds like a good idea.

Are the locks the sort that can be changed by just changing the barrels? If they are that might be something to consider.

Horrible to think of someone coming in and messing with your things.

LMW1990 · 01/04/2018 12:13

I've text him as they are not in to ask if they noticed any one going to the house as there's signs someone has been in but nothing taken. Haven't mentioned the phone. Just said I'm a bit spooked and it would be natural to ask those over the road anyway right? Regardless of if they are my LL or not? I feel a bit sick about it to be honest

Could you also ask your next door neighbours?

TheBrilliantMistake · 01/04/2018 12:14

Tell the landlord someone's been in, but mention you have a small video camera that might have caught the culprit and you will be checking with the cloud backup asap.
If it's him, he might confess there and then with the prospect of being on video. Obviously he doesn't need to know it's untrue! and you can always pass it off as 'discovered it wasn't working properly' later.

Is there any chance someone's been looking for a charger, or a cable, or something like that?

DeathStare · 01/04/2018 12:16

Someone has clearly been in your house, so I would report it to the police. I had similar once many many years ago and the police came and fingerprinted things.

I wouldn't let the landlord know until after I'd contacted the police, because if it was him it shouldn't have been. Once I'd contacted the police I'd text landlord and let him know that you have had an intruder while you were away and the police are investigating. If it was him, that should put fear in him.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/04/2018 12:16

Yes, have a word with the police on their non emergency line, and take their advice.

TabbyMack · 01/04/2018 12:16

If there’s no sign of a break in, then someone used a key. If it wasn’t your mum then it was either your LL or someone who had access to it from his house.

Change the locks. Ignore anyone here who tells you that you are not allowed to, they don’t know what they are talking about.

You are legally permitted to change the locks (regardless of what your tenancy agreement might say on the matter). Your only responsibility is to change them back when you move out...easily done if you keep the original barrel.

The LL will not know you’ve changed the locks - unless he tries to get in. Right? So if he raises the matter, you have your answer.

Change the locks.

ClaryFray · 01/04/2018 12:17

I'd call the landlord and ask if they saw anything before you check the nanny can you have set up in the front room. Drop that into conversation give them a chance to own up.

UpstartCrow · 01/04/2018 12:17

You have the right to enjoy your home. If the landlord has been in, searched through your things and checked your phone then report it to the police.

get an ip camera for security

Oaktree273 · 01/04/2018 12:21

CALL THE POLICE!!!!! Please do. You are fully entitled to do that as someone has clearly intruded.
Then change the locks and set up a small CCTV.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2018 12:22

You think it's an April Fool by the LL littlevoiceofsanity?

Addictedtohavingbabies · 01/04/2018 12:25

Go over and tell them you have reason to believe there's been a break in, say things have been moved round and have they seen anything seeing as they live over the road. You will shit them up and you'll be able to tell from their faces if it was them. I had a landlord letting themselves in but I left shortly after.

littlevoiceofsanity · 01/04/2018 12:27

Not by the LL Sparkling!

SimonBridges · 01/04/2018 12:27

I would question the landlord looking all innocent.

Idontdowindows · 01/04/2018 12:29

I would call the police instead of trying to figure out who got into your home.

Not that they can do much, but this was breaking and entering.

LMW1990 · 01/04/2018 12:29

@littlevoiceofsanity this is something I wouldn't joke about! My DSC are here tonight and on edge that someone has been in my home!
