She’s a bit of a crush of mine.

I’ve always loved her writing. But this week she wrote this about 80s movies which is so good.

www.theguardian.com/film/2018/mar/27/1980s-favourite-film-decade-top-gun-stand-by-me-hadley-freeman

She’s been all over the anti-Semitism protests and other issues.
And now she has articulated what I’ve been trying politely to say for ages about the Self ID issue.

Please have a read! Then if she’s convinced you sign the petition.

If she hasn’t feel free just to ignore or talk about 80s movies here, or general women-journalists-who-rock, or your own inappropriate crushes.

It must have been elsewhere I felt there was a link to the self id and antisemitism issues.

There are also fascinating parallels, I think, with the way the Brexit debates are conducted. The 'feeling' triumphing 'facts', who are the elites and who are the oppressed, etc etc.

"Must say I can’t stand her personally"

Why not?

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2018 13:19

I loved her way back when she wrote for 10 magazine

No idea if she still does but her writing stood out as very funny and spot on straight away and I rarely actually read fashion mags so that’s saying something

Tackytriceratops · 31/03/2018 13:23

Ah Lionel Shriver on any questions R4 right now has made a comment about the far left and how it creates hierarchies, in relation to antisemitism, which to me could be applied here. (I think)

Helmetbymidnight · 31/03/2018 13:27

why and who is behind the anti semitism lobby groups.

Interesting phrasing.

She should be 'slightly' ashamed of herself?

Perhaps you could explain it here.

And what do you mean by 'outed herself' - outed herself as a what?

BrendasUmbrella · 31/03/2018 13:31

I'd never heard of her before, but because you are all so enamored I just ordered two of her books for my holiday reading!

VeronicaLodge · 31/03/2018 13:39

I was really disappointed by her insistently dogmatic agenda laden article on anti semitism. Absolutely no effort made to examine why and who is behind the anti semitism lobby groups.

You've just outed yourself too.

quickname · 31/03/2018 13:51

she outed herself as aligned to powerful single issue lobbyists. disappointed to see Hadley roll out at their command a full out blinkered attack on Corbyn full of maliciousness towards his supporters that continued all week on twitter.
No mention of the timeline for the anti Corbyn protest this week. No greater context. No mention of pro Corbyn Jewish groups. No acknowledgement of middle ground.
No reflection upon why Luciana Berger paid a team to trawl through every comment Corbyn has ever made until they unearthed his 2012 comment to the mural painter and used this to substantiate the protest. No reflection on why any apology is never acceptable as it would dissipate the anger that must be kept at fever pitch. Just completely lacking in journalistic curiosity of her own side and a misuse of her platform quite frankly.

So I'm amused to see she has poked the hornets nest of the trans lobby today. Ironic really that she doesn't like to be attacked by similar

VeronicaLodge · 31/03/2018 13:53

Poor Corbyn. Never his fault.

quickname · 31/03/2018 13:55

@veronicalodge I always look at what is motivating, what is the agenda of a person or group making loud claims.
Powerful lobby groups are a particular interest of mine

Helmetbymidnight · 31/03/2018 14:00

Tell us more about this powerful 'single issue group' - the anti-Semite lobby, is it? :) who have Hadley do their bidding.

JessicaJonesJacket · 31/03/2018 14:01

Hadley's Corbyn/anti-semitism article was very in keeping with The Guardian's editorial policy towards both issues.
The interesting point about today's article is that it runs contrary to The Guardian's dominant approach to trans issues and calls out male Guardian writers who tell women to stfu.

quickname · 31/03/2018 14:03

@helmetmidnight do your own research, it's better that way Easter Smile

Helmetbymidnight · 31/03/2018 14:16

Oh right, you don't want to explain what you meant by a powerful Single-interest anti-Semite lobby group who controls journalists.

Sometimes I can't help feeling sorry for Corbyn that he is supported by so many anti-semites. It is fucking insane.

Grin
Helmetbymidnight · 31/03/2018 14:21

There's certainly some anger at the guardian on twitter - especially since it's trans visibility day.

JennyHolzersGhost · 31/03/2018 14:22

“Luciana Berger paid a team to trawl through every comment Corbyn has ever made until they unearthed his 2012 comment to the mural painter”

Is this not libellous ?
Iirc the Corbyn mural story was first broken by the Jewish Chronicle in 2015. What has Luciana Berger got to do with it exactly ?

Didiusfalco · 31/03/2018 14:26

She’s articulated what I feel so well. I’ve just sent it to dh who has been downplaying this for ages and to my mum - who will agree (with Hadley not dh!)

53rdWay · 31/03/2018 14:33

Love the idea that Hadley Freeman does the bidding of 'powerful single issue lobbyists' and that this somehow evidence against anti-Semitism. Whichever powerful single-issue lobbyists could you mean?

Stillscreaming · 31/03/2018 14:54

I am really curious about who's finding this anti trans stuff. I'd love to know where the money for Transgendertrend comes from.

I suspect that it's the ultra rad's accepting money from the American Christian Right again, as they did with their anti pornography stuff. Now, I'm not particularly pro-pornography but knowing that the money is coming from those who'd control women, not empower then, feels wrong. It feels particularly wrong today when the streets of my little Irish town are covered with anti choice posters, paid for with American Christian fundamentalist money.

hackmum · 31/03/2018 15:00

"I suspect that it's the ultra rad's accepting money from the American Christian Right again, as they did with their anti pornography stuff."

So, that's what you suspect, eh? Not a shred of evidence, but you suspect it.

"Now, I'm not particularly pro-pornography but knowing that the money is coming from those who'd control women, not empower then, feels wrong." (my italics).

So we've gone from entirely groundless suspicion in the first sentence to "knowing" in the second.

Are there a lot of subjects you jump to completely unfounded conclusions about, Stillscreaming? I guess you also know that the Royal Family are all lizards and that Jeremy Corbyn is really a member of the Illuminati, eh? You must spend an awful lot of your time feeling anxious about stuff.

Lottapianos · 31/03/2018 15:00

Great article from Hadley. Brave stuff. Loved her Corbyn article from earlier in the week too. She articulated what I was thinking so clearly

hackmum · 31/03/2018 15:00

"Love the idea that Hadley Freeman does the bidding of 'powerful single issue lobbyists' and that this somehow evidence against anti-Semitism. Whichever powerful single-issue lobbyists could you mean?"

Oh indeed. The fuckwits really are out in force in this thread.

Moussemoose · 31/03/2018 15:03

Powerful single issue lobbyists- yep those Jews have been sooooooo successful in the past haven't they?

Corbyn - middle class, white, male he is the one being oppressed.

Ffs

Anyway - well done Hadley - awesome week, excellent articles.

Stillscreaming · 31/03/2018 15:05

@ hackmum

I see the word 'suspect' becasue I have no evidence, except the pattern of behaviour I describe.

Do you know where the money for Transgendertrend comes from?
