To think this is NOT how you clean up dog piss?

New dog, still getting the hand of toilet training and she has a small accident once every few days.

DH's turn to clean it up today, and I discovered that his preferred method is to fill a bowl with soapy water, mop up the piss, wring the pissy cloth into the clean water, then swab the murky piss-water around the floor.

DH thinks I'm being overly precious, and failing to appreciate his dog-piss-cleaning prowess. AIBU?

Gross

Raven88 · 30/03/2018 14:19

Personally I would soak it up with a clean paper towel and then clean it with water and soap and maybe some zoflora in a spray bottle. I wouldn't use the pissy water to clean it. I would then use more paper towel to scrub and dry.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 14:28

Raven That's what I suggested! He told me I was being overly critical.

knowsmorethansnow · 30/03/2018 14:32

Whole floor needs a clean now, that’s gross.

Bluelady · 30/03/2018 14:33

We used to use Raven's method.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 14:36

Yeah, I re-cleaned it and he rolled his eyes at me (but did agree to do it differently from now on).

If I show him this thread though, he'll say it's only the clean-freaks coming on to agree with me. To counter that argument, please could I have a YANBU from someone who washes their bedding/towels less than once a week? Grin

Idontdowindows · 30/03/2018 14:38

Like Raven said, but I used vinegar in water to stop the smell.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/03/2018 14:44

Blott pee with toilet roll until floor is dry and then clean with detergent and warm water.

Why is puppy peeing inside?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 14:45

Conversation:

Me. 'By the way, MN agrees with me that that is not how you clean up dog piss.'
DH. 'Fuck sake.'
Me. 'I will tell them you said that.'
DH. 'Yes. Feel free.'
Pause.
DH. 'Did you tell them I used hot water and detergent?'

Depends on the flooring really. If it was carpet I'd clean it properly but if it was tiles or laminate I'd just soak it up with kitchen roll and then wipe over with an antibacterial wipe...I don't eat off or perform operations on my floor so I think that's sufficient!

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 30/03/2018 14:49

Yep same as PP. Dog doesn’t pee in the house but she’s had a couple of vom moments Envy. Clean with paper towels then disinfect floor and wipe with more paper towel then usually mop over again.

Zoflora do a fantastic disinfectant made for pet messes [[http://www.wilko.com/dog-healthcare-shampoo+grooming-supplies/zoflora-fresh-home-disinfectant-500ml/invt/0449317 here ]]

I have an elderly, semi-continent dog. I bought a secondhand wet-dry handheld Vax.

I pour water and zoflora on the puddle, suck the piss and zoflora water up, pour more water and zoflora on and suck it up again and then finish by spraying an enzyme cleaner especially for dog urine over the damp patch.

People are surprised when I tell them the dog is incontinent, so I assume it works.

berninisbeloved · 30/03/2018 14:52

Don’t put Zoflora on your floor. Puppy will get it on the paws and chew them bloody trying to get rid of the smell.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 14:53

GreatDuck She's a 1yo rescue, and we're not sure of her background. She does sort of 'get' that outside is for toileting, and can hold it all night, but we have these odd moments during the day when she'll wee indoors despite having been out within the last hour or so. It's in a different spot each time, so almost as though she's checking the rules iyswim? All we can do is try to arrest her mid flow (without scaring her) then rush her outside and praise like mad when she finishes off. It might just be that she doesn't know how to ask to go out yet, but I don't know. Any tips or insights welcome!

I had two mops. I got a poet from Wilkinson's and mop heads in different colours, just to save on using paper towels. You can fit a yard brush attachment on the same pole.

Pet Zoflara indoors, Jeyes outside. Piss can really cause damage.

Flisspaps · 30/03/2018 14:54

I am probably as far from a clean freak as you can get (I mop/hoover once a week, play bin jenga and change the sheets about once a month) and even I wouldn't wash the floor with piss water.

Pythonesque · 30/03/2018 15:00

I'm not a good cleaner *, but would also absolutely agree with the blot with paper towel then clean the area technique.

*which is part of the reason I don't yet have a pet!

missbattenburg · 30/03/2018 15:05

This is worse than just washing the floor with pissy water. This is delaying the dog's understanding of becoming clean in the house. Soapy water does not get rid of the piss smell totally and so the pup will still be able to smell piss in the house - leading to her thinking indoors is the right place to pee.

He needs to use an enzyme cleaner that destroys any remaining pee molecules and so removing the smell totally.

SweetLathyrus · 30/03/2018 15:06

It's not just about whether his method is gross or not (it is, YANBU), but for the puppy, he is spreading the smell, which will encourage it to pee there again. Regular disinfectant is nice for you, but it won't make any difference to the pup. You need a specific pet disinfectant that will break up the enzymes, or biological washing powder.

jedenfalls · 30/03/2018 15:07

I was raised by a cleanfreak and my whole ethos is to get as far away from that as possible, to the point of being a bit skanky.

OPs DH, your methods is disgusting

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/03/2018 15:09

I see OP. Probably best to go back to basics with her and take her out after every meal/drink, as soon as she wakes up or after a play, when she's been sat cuddling you etc to the same spot in the garden and use a phrase like " be clean or be quick " as soon as she's weeing and then give her a treat and loads of praise. She may not have been taught properly by her previous owners and might need it reinforcing again.

Don't lose heart she'll get there. What breed is she?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 15:16

She's a lurcher. She's really keen to please, so I'm optimistic that she will get there fairly soon. Your idea sounds like a good one though, will start doing that.

Thanks all for the unanimous YANBU! Was almost doubting myself (not that I'm ever wrong, perish the thought).

YoThePussy · 30/03/2018 15:25

YANBU, my user name is what we used to say as hello to our very elderly cat who was incontinent. I spent a fortune on special pet pee cleaning products so our old boy would not get anything horrid on his paws. I would never have used piss water! He would have hated it as well.

I tell myself I will change the bed every week but lose the will to live so easily and want to do something easier. Towels do get done each week though as they get really grouty looking if left.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/03/2018 15:27

I love Lurchers ❤️

Spudlet · 30/03/2018 15:27

YANBU. I am not a clean freak and don't wash my bedding half as often as MN specifies (ie every ten minutes Grin). I am a former dog trainer. His way will not remove the pissy smell as far as your dog is concerned so could make toilet training harder, as to her, your kitchen floor will still smell like her toilet!
